    Bootstrapping bilinear models of robotic sensorimotor cascades

    We consider the bootstrapping problem, which consists in learning a model of the agent's sensors and actuators starting from zero prior information, and we take the problem of servoing as a cross-modal task to validate the learned models. We study the class of bilinear dynamics sensors, in which the derivative of the observations are a bilinear form of the control commands and the observations themselves. This class of models is simple yet general enough to represent the main phenomena of three representative robotics sensors (field sampler, camera, and range-finder), apparently very different from one another. It also allows a bootstrapping algorithm based on hebbian learning, and that leads to a simple and bioplausible control strategy. The convergence properties of learning and control are demonstrated with extensive simulations and by analytical arguments

    Incremental Visual-Inertial 3D Mesh Generation with Structural Regularities

    Visual-Inertial Odometry (VIO) algorithms typically rely on a point cloud representation of the scene that does not model the topology of the environment. A 3D mesh instead offers a richer, yet lightweight, model. Nevertheless, building a 3D mesh out of the sparse and noisy 3D landmarks triangulated by a VIO algorithm often results in a mesh that does not fit the real scene. In order to regularize the mesh, previous approaches decouple state estimation from the 3D mesh regularization step, and either limit the 3D mesh to the current frame or let the mesh grow indefinitely. We propose instead to tightly couple mesh regularization and state estimation by detecting and enforcing structural regularities in a novel factor-graph formulation. We also propose to incrementally build the mesh by restricting its extent to the time-horizon of the VIO optimization; the resulting 3D mesh covers a larger portion of the scene than a per-frame approach while its memory usage and computational complexity remain bounded. We show that our approach successfully regularizes the mesh, while improving localization accuracy, when structural regularities are present, and remains operational in scenes without regularities.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, ICRA accepte

    Hybrid Control from Scratch: A Design Methodology for Assured Robotic Missions

    Robotic research over the last decades have lead us to different architectures to automatically synthesise discrete event controllers and implement these motion and task plans in real-world robot scenarios. However, these architectures usually build on existing robot hardware, generating as a result solutions that are influenced and/or restricted in their design by the available capabilities and sensors. In contrast to these approaches, we propose a design methodology that, given a specific domain of application, allowed us to build the first end-to-end implementation of an autonomous robot system that uses discrete event controller synthesis to generate assured mission plans. We validate this robot system in several missions of our target domain of application

    A fuzzy controller with supervised learning assisted reinforcement learning algorithm for obstacle avoidance

    Fuzzy logic system promises an efficient way for obstacle avoidance. However, it is difficult to maintain the correctness, consistency, and completeness of a fuzzy rule base constructed and tuned by a human expert. Reinforcement learning method is capable of learning the fuzzy rules automatically. However, it incurs heavy learning phase and may result in an insufficiently learned rule base due to the curse of dimensionality. In this paper, we propose a neural fuzzy system with mixed coarse learning and fine learning phases. In the first phase, supervised learning method is used to determine the membership functions for the input and output variables simultaneously. After sufficient training, fine learning is applied which employs reinforcement learning algorithm to fine-tune the membership functions for the output variables. For sufficient learning, a new learning method using modified Sutton and Barto's model is proposed to strengthen the exploration. Through this two-step tuning approach, the mobile robot is able to perform collision-free navigation. To deal with the difficulty in acquiring large amount of training data with high consistency for the supervised learning, we develop a virtual environment (VE) simulator, which is able to provide desktop virtual environment (DVE) and immersive virtual environment (IVE) visualization. Through operating a mobile robot in the virtual environment (DVE/IVE) by a skilled human operator, the training data are readily obtained and used to train the neural fuzzy system.published_or_final_versio

    Coordinated Sensor-Based Area Coverage and Cooperative Localization of a Heterogeneous Fleet of Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs)

    Sensor coverage with fleets of robots is a complex task requiring solutions to localization, communication, navigation and basic sensor coverage. Sensor coverage of large areas is a problem that occurs in a variety of different environments from terrestrial to aerial to aquatic. In this thesis we consider the aquatic version of the problem. Given a known aquatic environment and collection of aquatic surface vehicles with known kinematic and dynamic constraints, how can a fleet of vehicles be deployed to provide sensor coverage of the surface of the body of water? Rather than considering this problem in general, in this work we consider the problem given a specific fleet consisting of one very well equipped robot aided by a number of smaller, less well equipped devices that must operate in close proximity to the main robot. A boustrophedon decomposition algorithm is developed that incorporates the motion, sensing and communication constraints imposed by the autonomous fleet. Solving the coverage problem leads to a localization/communication problem. A critical problem for a group of autonomous vehicles is ensuring that the collection operates within a common reference frame. Here we consider the problem of localizing a heterogenous collection of aquatic surface vessels within a global reference frame. We assume that one vessel -- the mother robot -- has access to global position data of high accuracy, while the other vessels -- the child robots -- utilize limited onboard sensors and sophisticated sensors on board the mother robot to localize themselves. This thesis provides details of the design of the elements of the heterogeneous fleet including the sensors and sensing algorithms along with the communication strategy used to localize all elements of the fleet within a global reference frame. Details of the robot platforms to be used in implementing a solution are also described. Simulation of the approach is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm, and the algorithm and its components are evaluated using a fleet of ASVs

    Analytic and Learned Footstep Control for Robust Bipedal Walking

    Bipedal walking is a complex, balance-critical whole-body motion with inherently unstable inverted pendulum-like dynamics. Strong disturbances must be quickly responded to by altering the walking motion and placing the next step in the right place at the right time. Unfortunately, the high number of degrees of freedom of the humanoid body makes the fast computation of well-placed steps a particularly challenging task. Sensor noise, imprecise actuation, and latency in the sensomotoric feedback loop impose further challenges when controlling real hardware. This dissertation addresses these challenges and describes a method of generating a robust walking motion for bipedal robots. Fast modification of footstep placement and timing allows agile control of the walking velocity and the absorption of strong disturbances. In a divide and conquer manner, the concepts of motion and balance are solved separately from each other, and consolidated in a way that a low-dimensional balance controller controls the timing and the footstep locations of a high-dimensional motion generator. Central pattern generated oscillatory motion signals are used for the synthesis of an open-loop stable walk on flat ground, which lacks the ability to respond to disturbances due to the absence of feedback. The Central Pattern Generator exhibits a low-dimensional parameter set to influence the timing and the landing coordinates of the swing foot. For balance control, a simple inverted pendulum-based physical model is used to represent the principal dynamics of walking. The model is robust to disturbances in a way that it returns to an ideal trajectory from a wide range of initial conditions by employing a combination of Zero Moment Point control, step timing, and foot placement strategies. The simulation of the model and its controller output are computed efficiently in closed form, supporting high-frequency balance control at the cost of an insignificant computational load. Additionally, the sagittal step size produced by the controller can be trained online during walking with a novel, gradient descent-based machine learning method. While the analytic controller forms the core of reliable walking, the trained sagittal step size complements the analytic controller in order to improve the overall walking performance. The balanced whole-body walking motion arises by using the footstep coordinates and the step timing predicted by the low-dimensional model as control input for the Central Pattern Generator. Real robot experiments are presented as evidence for disturbance-resistant, omnidirectional gait control, with arguably the strongest push-recovery capabilities to date

    Energy-Efficient URLLC Service Provision via a Near-Space Information Network

    The integration of a near-space information network (NSIN) with the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is envisioned to significantly enhance the communication performance of future wireless communication systems by proactively altering wireless channels. This paper investigates the problem of deploying a RIS-integrated NSIN to provide energy-efficient, ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) services. We mathematically formulate this problem as a resource optimization problem, aiming to maximize the effective throughput and minimize the system power consumption, subject to URLLC and physical resource constraints. The formulated problem is challenging in terms of accurate channel estimation, RIS phase alignment, theoretical analysis, and effective solution. We propose a joint resource allocation algorithm to handle these challenges. In this algorithm, we develop an accurate channel estimation approach by exploring message passing and optimize phase shifts of RIS reflecting elements to further increase the channel gain. Besides, we derive an analysis-friend expression of decoding error probability and decompose the problem into two-layered optimization problems by analyzing the monotonicity, which makes the formulated problem analytically tractable. Extensive simulations have been conducted to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve outstanding channel estimation performance and is more energy-efficient than diverse benchmark algorithms
