    Offloading Content with Self-organizing Mobile Fogs

    Mobile users in an urban environment access content on the internet from different locations. It is challenging for the current service providers to cope with the increasing content demand from a large number of collocated mobile users. In-network caching to offload content at nodes closer to users alleviate the issue, though efficient cache management is required to find out who should cache what, when and where in an urban environment, given nodes limited computing, communication and caching resources. To address this, we first define a novel relation between content popularity and availability in the network and investigate a node's eligibility to cache content based on its urban reachability. We then allow nodes to self-organize into mobile fogs to increase the distributed cache and maximize content availability in a cost-effective manner. However, to cater rational nodes, we propose a coalition game for the nodes to offer a maximum "virtual cache" assuming a monetary reward is paid to them by the service/content provider. Nodes are allowed to merge into different spatio-temporal coalitions in order to increase the distributed cache size at the network edge. Results obtained through simulations using realistic urban mobility trace validate the performance of our caching system showing a ratio of 60-85% of cache hits compared to the 30-40% obtained by the existing schemes and 10% in case of no coalition

    Emerging Edge Computing Technologies for Distributed Internet of Things (IoT) Systems

    The ever-increasing growth in the number of connected smart devices and various Internet of Things (IoT) verticals is leading to a crucial challenge of handling massive amount of raw data generated from distributed IoT systems and providing real-time feedback to the end-users. Although existing cloud-computing paradigm has an enormous amount of virtual computing power and storage capacity, it is not suitable for latency-sensitive applications and distributed systems due to the involved latency and its centralized mode of operation. To this end, edge/fog computing has recently emerged as the next generation of computing systems for extending cloud-computing functions to the edges of the network. Despite several benefits of edge computing such as geo-distribution, mobility support and location awareness, various communication and computing related challenges need to be addressed in realizing edge computing technologies for future IoT systems. In this regard, this paper provides a holistic view on the current issues and effective solutions by classifying the emerging technologies in regard to the joint coordination of radio and computing resources, system optimization and intelligent resource management. Furthermore, an optimization framework for edge-IoT systems is proposed to enhance various performance metrics such as throughput, delay, resource utilization and energy consumption.     A Fog Computing Approach for Cognitive, Reliable and Trusted Distributed Systems

    In the Internet of Things era, a big volume of data is generated/gathered every second from billions of connected devices. The current network paradigm, which relies on centralised data centres (a.k.a. Cloud computing), becomes an impractical solution for IoT data storing and processing due to the long distance between the data source (e.g., sensors) and designated data centres. It worth noting that the long distance in this context refers to the physical path and time interval of when data is generated and when it get processed. To explain more, by the time the data reaches a far data centre, the importance of the data can be depreciated. Therefore, the network topologies have evolved to permit data processing and storage at the edge of the network, introducing what so-called fog Computing. The later will obviously lead to improvements in quality of service via processing and responding quickly and efficiently to varieties of data processing requests. Although fog computing is recognized as a promising computing paradigm, it suffers from challenging issues that involve: i) concrete adoption and management of fogs for decentralized data processing. ii) resources allocation in both cloud and fog layers. iii) having a sustainable performance since fog have a limited capacity in comparison with cloud. iv) having a secure and trusted networking environment for fogs to share resources and exchange data securely and efficiently. Hence, the thesis focus is on having a stable performance for fog nodes by enhancing resources management and allocation, along with safety procedures, to aid the IoT-services delivery and cloud computing in the ever growing industry of smart things. The main aspects related to the performance stability of fog computing involves the development of cognitive fog nodes that aim at provide fast and reliable services, efficient resources managements, and trusted networking, and hence ensure the best Quality of Experience, Quality of Service and Quality of Protection to end-users. Therefore the contribution of this thesis in brief is a novel Fog Resource manAgeMEnt Scheme (FRAMES) which has been proposed to crystallise fog distribution and resource management with an appropriate service's loads distribution and allocation based on the Fog-2-Fog coordination. Also, a novel COMputIng Trust manageMENT (COMITMENT) which is a software-based approach that is responsible for providing a secure and trusted environment for fog nodes to share their resources and exchange data packets. Both FRAMES and COMITMENT are encapsulated in the proposed Cognitive Fog (CF) computing which aims at making fog able to not only act on the data but also interpret the gathered data in a way that mimics the process of cognition in the human mind. Hence, FRAMES provide CF with elastic resource managements for load balancing and resolving congestion, while the COMITMENT employ trust and recommendations models to avoid malicious fog nodes in the Fog-2-Fog coordination environment. The proposed algorithms for FRAMES and COMITMENT have outperformed the competitive benchmark algorithms, namely Random Walks Offloading (RWO) and Nearest Fog Offloading (NFO) in the experiments to verify the validity and performance. The experiments were conducted on the performance (in terms of latency), load balancing among fog nodes and fogs trustworthiness along with detecting malicious events and attacks in the Fog-2-Fog environment. The performance of the proposed FRAMES's offloading algorithms has the lowest run-time (i.e., latency) against the benchmark algorithms (RWO and NFO) for processing equal-number of packets. Also, COMITMENT's algorithms were able to detect the collaboration requests whether they are secure, malicious or anonymous. The proposed work shows potential in achieving a sustainable fog networking paradigm and highlights significant benefits of fog computing in the computing ecosystem

    Fog Connectivity Clustering and MDP Modeling for Software-defined Vehicular Networks

    Intelligent and networked vehicles cooperate to create a mobile Cloud through vehicular Fog computing (VFC). Such clouds rely heavily on the underlying vehicular networks, so estimating communication resilience allows to address the problems caused by intermittent vehicle connectivity for data transfers. Individually estimating the communication stability of vehicles, nevertheless, undergoes incorrect predictions due to their particular mobility patterns. Therefore, we provide a region-oriented fog management model based on the connectivity through vehicular heterogeneous network environment via V2X and C-V2X. A fog management strategy dynamically monitors nearby vehicles to determine distinct regions in urban centres. The model enables a software-defined vehicular network (\Gls{SDVN}) controller to coordinate data flows. The vehicular connectivity described by our model assesses the potential for vehicle communication and conducts dynamic vehicle clustering. From the stochasticity of the environment, our model is based on Markov Decision Process (MDP), tracking the status of vehicle clusters and their potential for provisioning services. The model for vehicular clustering is supported by 5G and DSRC heterogeneous networks. Simulated analyses have shown the capability of our proposed model to estimate cluster reliability in real-time urban scenarios and support effective vehicular fog management

    A Game-Theoretic Approach to Strategic Resource Allocation Mechanisms in Edge and Fog Computing

    With the rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT), cloud-centric application management raises questions related to quality of service for real-time applications. Fog and edge computing (FEC) provide a complement to the cloud by filling the gap between cloud and IoT. Resource management on multiple resources from distributed and administrative FEC nodes is a key challenge to ensure the quality of end-user’s experience. To improve resource utilisation and system performance, researchers have been proposed many fair allocation mechanisms for resource management. Dominant Resource Fairness (DRF), a resource allocation policy for multiple resource types, meets most of the required fair allocation characteristics. However, DRF is suitable for centralised resource allocation without considering the effects (or feedbacks) of large-scale distributed environments like multi-controller software defined networking (SDN). Nash bargaining from micro-economic theory or competitive equilibrium equal incomes (CEEI) are well suited to solving dynamic optimisation problems proposing to ‘proportionately’ share resources among distributed participants. Although CEEI’s decentralised policy guarantees load balancing for performance isolation, they are not faultproof for computation offloading. The thesis aims to propose a hybrid and fair allocation mechanism for rejuvenation of decentralised SDN controller deployment. We apply multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) with robustness against adversarial controllers to enable efficient priority scheduling for FEC. Motivated by software cybernetics and homeostasis, weighted DRF is generalised by applying the principles of feedback (positive or/and negative network effects) in reverse game theory (GT) to design hybrid scheduling schemes for joint multi-resource and multitask offloading/forwarding in FEC environments. In the first piece of study, monotonic scheduling for joint offloading at the federated edge is addressed by proposing truthful mechanism (algorithmic) to neutralise harmful negative and positive distributive bargain externalities respectively. The IP-DRF scheme is a MARL approach applying partition form game (PFG) to guarantee second-best Pareto optimality viii | P a g e (SBPO) in allocation of multi-resources from deterministic policy in both population and resource non-monotonicity settings. In the second study, we propose DFog-DRF scheme to address truthful fog scheduling with bottleneck fairness in fault-probable wireless hierarchical networks by applying constrained coalition formation (CCF) games to implement MARL. The multi-objective optimisation problem for fog throughput maximisation is solved via a constraint dimensionality reduction methodology using fairness constraints for efficient gateway and low-level controller’s placement. For evaluation, we develop an agent-based framework to implement fair allocation policies in distributed data centre environments. In empirical results, the deterministic policy of IP-DRF scheme provides SBPO and reduces the average execution and turnaround time by 19% and 11.52% as compared to the Nash bargaining or CEEI deterministic policy for 57,445 cloudlets in population non-monotonic settings. The processing cost of tasks shows significant improvement (6.89% and 9.03% for fixed and variable pricing) for the resource non-monotonic setting - using 38,000 cloudlets. The DFog-DRF scheme when benchmarked against asset fair (MIP) policy shows superior performance (less than 1% in time complexity) for up to 30 FEC nodes. Furthermore, empirical results using 210 mobiles and 420 applications prove the efficacy of our hybrid scheduling scheme for hierarchical clustering considering latency and network usage for throughput maximisation.Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi (Tetfund, Nigeria

    Service Provisioning in Edge-Cloud Continuum Emerging Applications for Mobile Devices

    Disruptive applications for mobile devices can be enhanced by Edge computing facilities. In this context, Edge Computing (EC) is a proposed architecture to meet the mobility requirements imposed by these applications in a wide range of domains, such as the Internet of Things, Immersive Media, and Connected and Autonomous Vehicles. EC architecture aims to introduce computing capabilities in the path between the user and the Cloud to execute tasks closer to where they are consumed, thus mitigating issues related to latency, context awareness, and mobility support. In this survey, we describe which are the leading technologies to support the deployment of EC infrastructure. Thereafter, we discuss the applications that can take advantage of EC and how they were proposed in the literature. Finally, after examining enabling technologies and related applications, we identify some open challenges to fully achieve the potential of EC, and also research opportunities on upcoming paradigms for service provisioning. This survey is a guide to comprehend the recent advances on the provisioning of mobile applications, as well as foresee the expected next stages of evolution for these applications
