    Deadbeat control based on a multipurpose disturbance observer for permanent magnet synchronous motors

Robustness against parameter mismatches and position-sensorless operation are two important research topics for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. Usually, the existing observers are designed for achieving a specific function. While here, both the above two functions are integrated into the proposed sliding-mode disturbance observer: (i) if a position sensor is equipped, accurate current regulation can be achieved by deadbeat predictive current control despite mismatched motor parameters; (ii) if the position sensor is not equipped but with a good estimation of motor parameters, the observer can serve as a back electromotive force estimator. Then, the rotor position can be extracted for position-sensorless control. Usually, a low-pass filter is required to suppress high-frequency noises in the conventional sliding-mode observer. This inevitably leads to phase delay in the estimation. By comparison, a complex coefficient filter is inherently embedded in the proposed method, which can provide accurate estimation without phase delay or magnitude error. Experimental results obtained from a 2.4 kW PMSM drive platform indicate that high-performance current control can be achieved with good robustness for position sensor-based operation. Also, rotor position can be accurately estimated with good steady and dynamic performance for position-sensorless operation

    Disturbance/uncertainty estimation and attenuation techniques in PMSM drives–a survey

    This paper gives a comprehensive overview on disturbance/uncertainty estimation and attenuation (DUEA) techniques in permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. Various disturbances and uncertainties in PMSM and also other alternating current (AC) motor drives are first reviewed which shows they have different behaviors and appear in different control loops of the system. The existing DUEA and other relevant control methods in handling disturbances and uncertainties widely used in PMSM drives, and their latest developments are then discussed and summarized. It also provides in-depth analysis of the relationship between these advanced control methods in the context of PMSM systems. When dealing with uncertainties,it is shown that DUEA has a different but complementary mechanism to widely used robust control and adaptive control. The similarities and differences in disturbance attenuation of DUEA and other promising methods such as internal model control and output regulation theory have been analyzed in detail. The wide applications of these methods in different AC motor drives (in particular in PMSM drives) are categorized and summarized. Finally the paper ends with the discussion on future directions in this area

    Some Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) Sensorless Control Methods based on Operation Speed Area

    This paper compares some sensorless Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) controls for driving an electric vehicle in terms of operating speed. Sensorless control is a type of control method in which sensors, such as speed and position sensors, are not used to measure controlled variables.  The controlled variable value is estimated from the stator current measurement. Sensorless control performance is not as good as a sensor-based system. This paper aims are to recommend a control method for the PMSM sensorless controls that would be used to drive an electric vehicle. The methods that we will discuss are divided into four categories based on the operation speed area.  They are a startup, low speed, high speed, and low and high-speed areas. The low and high-speed area will be divided into with and without switching.  If PMSM more work at high speed, the most speed area that is used, we prefer to choose the method that works at high speed, that is, the modification or combination of two or more conventional methods

    International audienceA nonlinear observer for surface-mount permanent-magnet synchronous motors (SPMSMs) was recently proposed by Ortega et al.(LSS, Gif-sur-Yvette Cedex, France, LSS Internal Rep., Jan. 2009). The nonlinear observer generates the position estimate hat(theta) via the estimates of sin theta and cos theta. In contrast to Luenberger-type observers, it does not require speed information, thus eliminating the complexity associated with speed estimation errors. Further, it is simple to implement. In this study, the nonlinear observer performance is verified experimentally. To obtain speed estimates from the position information, a proportional-integral (PI) tracking controller speed estimator was utilized. The results are good with and without loads, above 10 r/min

    Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors’ Passive Sensorless Control: A Review

    Sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motors is nowadays used in many industrial, home and traction applications, as it allows the presence of a position sensor to be avoided with benefits for the cost and reliability of the drive. An estimation of the rotor position is required to perform the field-oriented control (FOC), which is the most common control scheme used for this type of motor. Many algorithms have been developed for this purpose, which use different techniques to derive the rotor angle from the stator voltages and currents. Among them, the so-called passive methods have gained increasing interest as they do not introduce additional losses and current distortion associated instead with algorithms based on the injection of high-frequency signals. The aim of this paper is to present a review of the main passive sensorless methods proposed in the technical literature over the last few years, analyzing their main features and principles of operation. An experimental comparison among the most promising passive sensorless algorithms is then reported, focusing on their performance in the low-speed operating region

    Global identification of electrical and mechanical parameters in PMSM drive based on dynamic self-learning PSO

    A global parameter estimation method for a PMSM drive system is proposed, where the electrical parameters, mechanical parameters and voltage-source-inverter (VSI) nonlinearity are regarded as a whole and parameter estimation is formulated as a single parameter optimization model. A dynamic learning estimator is proposed for tracking the electrical parameters, mechanical parameters and VSI of PMSM drive by using dynamic self learning particle swarm optimization (DSLPSO). In DSLPSO, a novel movement modification equation with dynamic exemplar learning strategy is designed to ensure its diversity and achieve a reasonable tradeoff between the exploitation and exploration during the search process. Moreover, a nonlinear multi-scale based interactive learning operator is introduced for accelerating the convergence speed of the Pbest particles; meanwhile a dynamic opposition-based learning (OBL) strategy is designed to facilitate the gBest particle to explore a potentially better region. The proposed algorithm is applied to parameter estimation for a PMSM drive system. The results show that the proposed method has better performance in tracking the variation of electrical parameters, and estimating the immeasurable mechanical parameters and the VSI disturbance voltage simultaneously
