    Research instrumentation for tornado electromagnetics emissions detection

    Instrumentation for receiving, processing, and recording HF/VHF electromagnetic emissions from severe weather activity is described. Both airborne and ground-based instrumentation units are described on system and subsystem levels. Design considerations, design decisions, and the rationale behind the decisions are given. Performance characteristics are summarized and recommendations for improvements are given. The objectives, procedures, and test results of the following are presented: (1) airborne flight test in the Midwest U.S.A. (Spring 1975) and at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida (Summer 1975); (2) ground-based data collected in North Georgia (Summer/Fall 1975); and (3) airborne flight test in the Midwest (late Spring 1976) and at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida (Summer 1976). The Midwest tests concentrated on severe weather with tornadic activity; the Florida and Georgia tests monitored air mass convective thunderstorm characteristics.     Acoustical Ranging Techniques in Embedded Wireless Sensor Networked Devices

    Location sensing provides endless opportunities for a wide range of applications in GPS-obstructed environments; where, typically, there is a need for higher degree of accuracy. In this article, we focus on robust range estimation, an important prerequisite for fine-grained localization. Motivated by the promise of acoustic in delivering high ranging accuracy, we present the design, implementation and evaluation of acoustic (both ultrasound and audible) ranging systems.We distill the limitations of acoustic ranging; and present efficient signal designs and detection algorithms to overcome the challenges of coverage, range, accuracy/resolution, tolerance to Doppler’s effect, and audible intensity. We evaluate our proposed techniques experimentally on TWEET, a low-power platform purpose-built for acoustic ranging applications. Our experiments demonstrate an operational range of 20 m (outdoor) and an average accuracy 2 cm in the ultrasound domain. Finally, we present the design of an audible-range acoustic tracking service that encompasses the benefits of a near-inaudible acoustic broadband chirp and approximately two times increase in Doppler tolerance to achieve better performance

    VHF command system study

    Solutions are provided to specific problems arising in the GSFC VHF-PSK and VHF-FSK Command Systems in support of establishment and maintenance of Data Systems Standards. Signal structures which incorporate transmission on the uplink of a clock along with the PSK or FSK data are considered. Strategies are developed for allocating power between the clock and data, and spectral analyses are performed. Bit error probability and other probabilities pertinent to correct transmission of command messages are calculated. Biphase PCM/PM and PCM/FM are considered as candidate modulation techniques on the telemetry downlink, with application to command verification. Comparative performance of PCM/PM and PSK systems is given special attention, including implementation considerations. Gain in bit error performance due to coding is also considered

    Mini-L Loran-C receiver

    A brief description of the Loran-C system is presented with a suggested receiver based on a standard AM-FM integrated circuit chip. Construction details of the Mini-L Loran-C prototype front-end are considered. The Mini-L system was bench tested for approximately 500 hours under a variety of reception conditions. The Mini-L concept combined with a microprocessor system is a promising approach to the development of truly low-cost Loran-C receivers for the marine and airborne user

    The next generation of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), such as Galileo [1] and GPS modernization [2], will use signals with equal code and bit periods, which will introduce a potential sign transition in each segment of the signal processed in the acquisition block. If FFT is used to perform the correlations a sign transition occurring within the integration time may cause a splitting of the main peak of the Cross Ambiguity Function (CAF) into two smaller lobes along the Doppler shift axis [3].     Comparison of direct and heterodyne detection optical intersatellite communication links

    The performance of direct and heterodyne detection optical intersatellite communication links are evaluated and compared. It is shown that the performance of optical links is very sensitive to the pointing and tracking errors at the transmitter and receiver. In the presence of random pointing and tracking errors, optimal antenna gains exist that will minimize the required transmitter power. In addition to limiting the antenna gains, random pointing and tracking errors also impose a power penalty in the link budget. This power penalty is between 1.6 to 3 dB for a direct detection QPPM link, and 3 to 5 dB for a heterodyne QFSK system. For the heterodyne systems, the carrier phase noise presents another major factor of performance degradation that must be considered. In contrast, the loss due to synchronization error is small. The link budgets for direct and heterodyne detection systems are evaluated. It is shown that, for systems with large pointing and tracking errors, the link budget is dominated by the spatial tracking error, and the direct detection system shows a superior performance because it is less sensitive to the spatial tracking error. On the other hand, for systems with small pointing and tracking jitters, the antenna gains are in general limited by the launch cost, and suboptimal antenna gains are often used in practice.     Efficient and Interference-Resilient Wireless Connectivity for IoT Applications

    With the coming of age of the Internet of Things (IoT), demand on ultra-low power (ULP) and low-cost radios will continue to boost tremendously. The Bluetooth-Low-energy (BLE) standard provides a low power solution to connect IoT nodes with mobile devices, however, the power of maintaining a connection with a reasonable latency remains the limiting factor in defining the lifetime of event-driven BLE devices. BLE radio power consumption is in the milliwatt range and can be duty cycled for average powers around 30ÎĽW, but at the expense of long latency. Furthermore, wireless transceivers traditionally perform local oscillator (LO) calibration using an external crystal oscillator (XTAL) that adds significant size and cost to a system. Removing the XTAL enables a true single-chip radio, but an alternate means for calibrating the LO is required. Innovations in both the system architecture and circuits implementation are essential for the design of truly ubiquitous receivers for IoT applications. This research presents two porotypes as back-channel BLE receivers, which have lower power consumption while still being robust in the presents of interference and able to receive back-channel message from BLE compliant transmitters.     This thesis explores the specific requirements and challenges for the design of a dedicated wake-up receiver for medical implant communication services equipped with a novel “uncertain-IF†architecture combined with a high – Q filtering MEMS resonator and a free running CMOS ring oscillator as the RF LO. The receiver prototype, implements an IBM 0.18μm mixed-signal 7ML RF CMOS technology and achieves a sensitivity of -62 dBm at 404MHz while consuming \u3c100 μW from a 1 V supply
