    Cavitation Inception in Spool Valves

    Cavitation has been investigated in directional control valves in order to identify damage mechanisms characteristic of components of aircraft hydraulic systems. Tests have been conducted in a representative metal spool valve and in a model three times larger. Data taken under noncavitating conditions with both valves showed that the position of the high-velocity annular jet shifts orientation, depending upon valve opening and Reynolds number. By means of high-frequency response pressure transducers strategically placed in the valve chamber cavitation could be sensed by the correlation of noise with a cavitation index. The onset of cavitation can be detected by comparing energy spectra for a fixed valve opening and a constant discharge. Another sensitive indicator of cavitation inception is the ratio of cavitating to noncavitating spectral densities. The incipient cavitation number as defined in this investigation is correlated with the Reynolds number for both valves

    Simulation of the cavitating flow in a model oil hydraulic spool valve using different model approaches

    The contribution compares results of Large Eddy Simulations of the cavitating flow in a model oil hydraulic spool valve using an Euler-Euler and a one-way coupled Euler- Lagrange model. The impact of the choice of the empirical constants in the Kunz cavitation model is demonstrated. Provided these are chosen appropriately the approach can yield reasonable agreement with the corresponding experiment. The one-way Euler-Lagrange model yields less agreement. It is demonstrated that this is due to the lack of realistic volumetric coupling, rarely accounted for in this type of method. First results of such an algorithm are presented featuring substantially more realism

For this reason, hydraulic components, especially positive displacement pumps and motors, are pushing to conform to the dB limits defined by European regulations for working environments (ref. SNSI, Horizon 2020, and Direttiva Macchine 2006/42/CE), both in mobile and indoor applications.     Concept Evaluation for the Establishment of a Firm End-Stop Feeling in an Asymmetric Hydraulic Steering Unit

    Danfoss Power Solutions Aps has a product line focusing on hydraulic steering units for heavy-duty machines. The focus of this paper is on the end-stop torque encountered by the operator for a new asymmetrical hydraulic steering unit, referred to as sSteer. This hydraulically asymmetric concept increases the steering responsiveness between the steering wheel input and the output. However, compared to traditional hydraulic steering units, the asymmetrical design has a drawback regarding the level of end-stop torque felt by the operator when reaching the left-side end stop. This paper investigates three different concepts for improving/increasing the end-stop torque, namely, including a bleed orifice, removing a set of suction valves, and a solution with pre-tensioned suction valves and tank line. During the investigations, these concepts were compared and benchmarked using experimental data to identify advantages and disadvantages. Based on the investigations, it is concluded that the concept with pre-tensioned suction valves and a pressurized tank line ensures the best compromise between the different design requirements and the establishment of a firm end-stop feeling for the operator

    Development of an Electro-Hydraulic Floating Double-Disc Valve.

    There is a need for low-cost switching and proportional electro-hydraulic valves with low contamination sensitivity and good reliability. In an attempt to meet this need, a novel electro-hydraulic floating double-disc valve has been developed to the stage where it can be used to control hydraulic cylinders or motors directly. As the valve is significantly underlapped, problems still remain in achieving adequate hydraulic stiffness in the proportional mode of operation. The valve operation, which relies on the complex interaction between fluid and electro-magnetic forces acting on the valve discs, is described and a theoretical model of the fluid and electro-magnetic characteristics of the valve is presented. The theory shows satisfactory agreement with experimental data. A pre-production version of the double-disc valve has been designed and manufactured and it incorporates ideas for manufacturing cost reduction while at the same time conforming to CETOP 3 international valve port standards. This valve has been successfully tested as a switching or proportional device when controlling two different cylinders. Proportional control of the valve is achieved using Pulse-Width-Modulation technique. British Technology Group and University of Surrey have applied for a patent on the valve. The patented floating-disc valve has the following features: (a) 3 way or 4 way 2-position or proportional action with minor changes to produce the two types of action, (b) cartridge construction with interchangeable components, (c) low contamination sensitivity, (d) few critical dimensions, (e) no sliding surfaces, (f) CETOP valve port configuration and (g) potentially capable of operating with corrosive or non-lubricating fluids

    Cavitation refers to the formation of vapor cavities in a liquid when the local pressure becomes lower than the saturation pressure. In many hydraulic applications, cavitation is considered as a non-desirable phenomenon, as far as it may cause performance degradation, vibration problems, enhance broad-band noise-emission, and eventually trigger erosion. In this Special Issue, recent findings about cavitation instabilities are reported. More precisely, the dynamics of cavitation sheets are explored at very low Reynolds numbers in laminar flows, and in microscale applications. Both experimental and numerical approach are used. For the latter, original methods are assessed, such as smooth particles hydrodynamics or detached eddy simulations coupled to a compressible approach

    CFD Modeling of Globe Valves for Oxygen Application

    Components used in high-pressure, high-temperature, flowing oxygen are susceptible to ignition and combustion in presence of restriction or when particles impact these restriction. The valves in any systems are the common flow restrictors, hence, the design and analyses of valves are most critical tasks. The flow of oxygen through valves distinguishes itself by accentuating auto-ignition and consequent flame propagation in metals and non-metals, apart from other usual characteristics present with gases/liquids. The combination of ignition resistance, proper and reliable performance and fabrication economy marks the specification of material and design of valves in oxygen-enriched environment. The analyses have been performed by applying the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT, to obtain the solution of the two-dimensional turbulent flow field through a globe valve for its different openings in the GOX environment. The flow control valves in high velocity oxygen systems for different openings are simulated for turbulence and eddy dissipation. The influence of pressure, flow rate and opening of the valve on the rise in temperature and eddy dissipation rate is also obtained for compressible flow range. The simulation for turbulence is done by k- and k- turbulence models and the results have been compared

    In recent years, microfluidic devices with a large surface-to-volume ratio have witnessed rapid development, allowing them to be successfully utilized in many engineering applications. A smart control process has been proposed for many years, while many new innovations and enabling technologies have been developed for smart flow control, especially concerning “smart flow control” at the microscale. This Special Issue aims to highlight the current research trends related to this topic, presenting a collection of 33 papers from leading scholars in this field. Among these include studies and demonstrations of flow characteristics in pumps or valves as well as dynamic performance in roiling mill systems or jet systems to the optimal design of special components in smart control systems
