    Frequency Control of Microgrid Network using Intelligent Techniques – ANN, PSO and ANFIS

    The electric grid is a complex system that transmits electricity from the point of generation to the point of consumption. According to the IEA, worldwide energy-related carbon emissions in 2021 will be 36.3Gt, 60% greater than at the start of the industrial revolution. Researchers have used intelligent solutions for power system frequency regulation to ensure that the system\u27s frequency is maintained. A proper frequency control of the microgrid necessitates the modeling and study of the systems. To emulate the operation of the human brain, frequency control employs a variety of artificial intelligence-based computer algorithms. This thesis generates a complete state space model of a microgrid composed of solar power plants, wind turbines, battery storage systems, and backup generators. The system frequency control was created for this system and analyzed against a benchmark PID controller utilizing several intelligent controllers such as PSO optimized PID, ANN, and ANFIS. The suggested intelligent frequency controllers were be simulated and validated using MATLAB/ Simulink

    Frequency Management Strategies for Local Power Generation Network

    This paper presents an intelligent load frequency control technique based on ANFIS controller which is capable to restore system frequency within small fraction of time. Frequency deviations in microgrid occur when the system supply is not sufficient to match the demand. Efforts are required to keep the frequency deviation within acceptable limit. Using vehicle-to-grid technology, where electric vehicles are used as energy storage elements for load frequency control in microgrid. For generating the control action to electric vehicles and energy sources in microgrid, type-2 ANFIS has been employed for quick frequency stabilization in the presence of load and source disturbances. Diesel generator and wind generator are DG sources considered in this paper and electric vehicles are used as energy storage element. Optimal power sharing among the different generating units and electric vehicles is achieved by ANFIS controller. Adaptive nature of ANFIS makes it more suitable and highly robust controller for a complex inter-connected system. Simulation results demonstrate that ANFIS controller is highly efficient as compared to PID controller, fuzzy logic controller, and interval type-2 fuzzy logic controller

    Model-based Fault-tolerant Control to Guarantee the Performance of a Hybrid Wind-Diesel Power System in a Microgrid Configuration

    AbstractThis paper presents a comparison of two different adaptive control schemes for improving the performance of a hybrid wind-diesel power system in an islanded microgrid configuration against the baseline controller, IEEE type 1 automatic voltage regulator (AVR). The first scheme uses a model reference adaptive controller (MRAC) with a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller tuned by a genetic algorithm (GA) to control the speed of the diesel engine (DE) for regulating the frequency of the power system and uses a classical MRAC for controlling the voltage amplitude of the synchronous machine (SM). The second scheme uses a MRAC with a PID controller tuned by a GA to control the speed of the DE, and a MRAC with an artificial neural network (ANN) and a PID controller tuned by a GA for controlling the voltage amplitude of the SM. Different operating conditions of the microgrid and fault scenarios in the diesel engine generator (DEG) were tested: 1) decrease in the performance of the diesel engine actuator (40% and 80%), 2) sudden connection of 0.5 MW load, and 3) a 3-phase fault with duration of 0.5seconds. Dynamic models of the microgrid components are presented in detail and the proposed microgrid and its fault-tolerant control (FTC) are implemented and tested in the Simpower Systems of MATLAB/Simulink® simulation environment. The simulation results showed that the use of ANNs in combination with model-based adaptive controllers improves the FTC system performance in comparison with the baseline controller

    Abstract: Load frequency control or automatic generation control is one of the main operations that take place daily in a modern power system. The objectives of load frequency control are to maintain power balance between interconnected areas and to control the power flow in the tie-lines. Electric power cannot be stored in large quantity that is why its production must be equal to the consumption in each time. This equation constitutes the key for a good management of any power system and introduces the need of more controllers when taking into account the integration of renewable energy sources into the traditional power system. There are many controllers presented in the literature and this work reviews the traditional load frequency controllers and those, which combined the traditional controller and artificial intelligence algorithms for controlling the load frequency

    Review of trends and targets of complex systems for power system optimization

    Optimization systems (OSs) allow operators of electrical power systems (PS) to optimally operate PSs and to also create optimal PS development plans. The inclusion of OSs in the PS is a big trend nowadays, and the demand for PS optimization tools and PS-OSs experts is growing. The aim of this review is to define the current dynamics and trends in PS optimization research and to present several papers that clearly and comprehensively describe PS OSs with characteristics corresponding to the identified current main trends in this research area. The current dynamics and trends of the research area were defined on the basis of the results of an analysis of the database of 255 PS-OS-presenting papers published from December 2015 to July 2019. Eleven main characteristics of the current PS OSs were identified. The results of the statistical analyses give four characteristics of PS OSs which are currently the most frequently presented in research papers: OSs for minimizing the price of electricity/OSs reducing PS operation costs, OSs for optimizing the operation of renewable energy sources, OSs for regulating the power consumption during the optimization process, and OSs for regulating the energy storage systems operation during the optimization process. Finally, individual identified characteristics of the current PS OSs are briefly described. In the analysis, all PS OSs presented in the observed time period were analyzed regardless of the part of the PS for which the operation was optimized by the PS OS, the voltage level of the optimized PS part, or the optimization goal of the PS OS.Web of Science135art. no. 107

    Load Frequency Control (LFC) Strategies in Renewable Energy‐Based Hybrid Power Systems:A Review

    The hybrid power system is a combination of renewable energy power plants and conventional energy power plants. This integration causes power quality issues including poor settling times and higher transient contents. The main issue of such interconnection is the frequency variations caused in the hybrid power system. Load Frequency Controller (LFC) design ensures the reliable and efficient operation of the power system. The main function of LFC is to maintain the system frequency within safe limits, hence keeping power at a specific range. An LFC should be supported with modern and intelligent control structures for providing the adequate power to the system. This paper presents a comprehensive review of several LFC structures in a diverse configuration of a power system. First of all, an overview of a renewable energy-based power system is provided with a need for the development of LFC. The basic operation was studied in single-area, multi-area and multi-stage power system configurations. Types of controllers developed on different techniques studied with an overview of different control techniques were utilized. The comparative analysis of various controllers and strategies was performed graphically. The future scope of work provided lists the potential areas for conducting further research. Finally, the paper concludes by emphasizing the need for better LFC design in complex power system environments

    Adaptive virtual inertia controller based on machine learning for superconducting magnetic energy storage for dynamic response enhanced

    The goal of this paper was to create an adaptive virtual inertia controller (VIC) for superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES). An adaptive virtual inertia controller is designed using an extreme learning machine (ELM). The test system is a 25-bus interconnected Java Indonesian power grid. Time domain simulation is used to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed controller method. To simulate the case study, the MATLAB/Simulink environment is used. According to the simulation results, an extreme learning machine can be used to make the virtual inertia controller adaptable to system variation. It has also been discovered that designing virtual inertia based on an extreme learning machine not only makes the VIC adaptive to any change in the system but also provides better dynamics performance when compared to other scenarios (the overshoot value of adaptive VIC is less than -5×10-5)
