    Fuzzy-logic-based control, filtering, and fault detection for networked systems: A Survey

    This paper is concerned with the overview of the recent progress in fuzzy-logic-based filtering, control, and fault detection problems. First, the network technologies are introduced, the networked control systems are categorized from the aspects of fieldbuses and industrial Ethernets, the necessity of utilizing the fuzzy logic is justified, and the network-induced phenomena are discussed. Then, the fuzzy logic control strategies are reviewed in great detail. Special attention is given to the thorough examination on the latest results for fuzzy PID control, fuzzy adaptive control, and fuzzy tracking control problems. Furthermore, recent advances on the fuzzy-logic-based filtering and fault detection problems are reviewed.     Cyber-Physical Codesign of Wireless Structural Control System

    Structural control systems play a critical role in protecting civil infrastructure from natural hazards such as earthquakes and extreme winds. Utilizing wireless sensors for sensing, communication and control, wireless structural control systems provide an attractive alternative for structural vibration mitigation. Although wireless control systems have advantages of flexible installation, rapid deployment and low maintenance cost, there are unique challenges associated with them, such as wireless network induced time delay and potential data loss. These challenges need to be considered jointly from both the network (cyber) and control (physical) perspectives. This research aims to develop a framework facilitating cyber-physical codesign of wireless control system. The challenges of wireless structural control are addressed through: (1) a numerical simulation tool to realistically model the complexities of wireless structural control systems, (2) a codesign approach for designing wireless control system, (3) a sensor platform to experimentally evaluate wireless control performance, (4) an estimation method to compensate for the data loss and sensor failure, and (5) a framework for fault tolerance study of wireless control system withreal-time hybrid simulation. The results of this work not only provide codesign tools to evaluate and validate wireless control design, but also the codesign strategies to implement on real-world structures for wireless structural control

    STABILITY AND PERFORMANCE OF NETWORKED CONTROL SYSTEMS

    Network control systems (NCSs), as one of the most active research areas, are arousing comprehensive concerns along with the rapid development of network. This dissertation mainly discusses the stability and performance of NCSs into the following two parts. In the first part, a new approach is proposed to reduce the data transmitted in networked control systems (NCSs) via model reduction method. Up to our best knowledge, we are the first to propose this new approach in the scientific and engineering society. The "unimportant" information of system states vector is truncated by balanced truncation method (BTM) before sending to the networked controller via network based on the balance property of the remote controlled plant controllability and observability. Then, the exponential stability condition of the truncated NCSs is derived via linear matrix inequality (LMI) forms. This method of data truncation can usually reduce the time delay and further improve the performance of the NCSs. In addition, all the above results are extended to the switched NCSs. The second part presents a new robust sliding mode control (SMC) method for general uncertain time-varying delay stochastic systems with structural uncertainties and the Brownian noise (Wiener process). The key features of the proposed method are to apply singular value decomposition (SVD) to all structural uncertainties, to introduce adjustable parameters for control design along with the SMC method, and new Lyapunov-type functional. Then, a less-conservative condition for robust stability and a new robust controller for the general uncertain stochastic systems are derived via linear matrix inequality (LMI) forms. The system states are able to reach the SMC switching surface as guaranteed in probability 1 by the proposed control rule. Furthermore, the novel Lyapunov-type functional for the uncertain stochastic systems is used to design a new robust control for the general case where the derivative of time-varying delay can be any bounded value (e.g., greater than one). It is theoretically proved that the conservatism of the proposed method is less than the previous methods. All theoretical proofs are presented in the dissertation. The simulations validate the correctness of the theoretical results and have better performance than the existing results

    Cyber-Physical Co-Design of Wireless Control Systems

    Wireless sensor-actuator network (WSAN) technology is gaining rapid adoption in process industries because of its advantages in lowering deployment and maintenance cost in challenging environments. While early success of industrial WSANs has been recognized, significant potential remains in exploring WSANs as unified networks for industrial plants. This thesis research explores a cyber-physical co-design approach to design wireless control systems. To enable holistic studies of wireless control systems, we have developed the Wireless Cyber-Physical Simulator (WCPS), an integrated co-simulation environment that integrates Simulink and our implementation of WSANs based on the industrial WirelessHART standard. We further develop novel WSAN protocols tailored for advanced control designs for networked control systems. WCPS now works as the first simulator that features both linear and nonlinear physical plant models, state-of-art WirelessHART protocol stack, and realistic wireless network characteristics. A realistic wireless structural control study sheds light on the challenges of WSC and the limitations of a traditional structural control approach under realistic wireless conditions. Systematic emergency control results demonstrate that our real-time emergency communication approach enables timely emergency handling, while allowing regular feedback control loops to effectively share resources in WSANs during normal operations.     Neural Networks: Training and Application to Nonlinear System Identification and Control

    This dissertation investigates training neural networks for system identification and classification. The research contains two main contributions as follow:1. Reducing number of hidden layer nodes using a feedforward componentThis research reduces the number of hidden layer nodes and training time of neural networks to make them more suited to online identification and control applications by adding a parallel feedforward component. Implementing the feedforward component with a wavelet neural network and an echo state network provides good models for nonlinear systems.The wavelet neural network with feedforward component along with model predictive controller can reliably identify and control a seismically isolated structure during earthquake. The network model provides the predictions for model predictive control. Simulations of a 5-story seismically isolated structure with conventional lead-rubber bearings showed significant reductions of all response amplitudes for both near-field (pulse) and far-field ground motions, including reduced deformations along with corresponding reduction in acceleration response. The controller effectively regulated the apparent stiffness at the isolation level. The approach is also applied to the online identification and control of an unmanned vehicle. Lyapunov theory is used to prove the stability of the wavelet neural network and the model predictive controller. 2. Training neural networks using trajectory based optimization approachesTraining neural networks is a nonlinear non-convex optimization problem to determine the weights of the neural network. Traditional training algorithms can be inefficient and can get trapped in local minima. Two global optimization approaches are adapted to train neural networks and avoid the local minima problem. Lyapunov theory is used to prove the stability of the proposed methodology and its convergence in the presence of measurement errors. The first approach transforms the constraint satisfaction problem into unconstrained optimization. The constraints define a quotient gradient system (QGS) whose stable equilibrium points are local minima of the unconstrained optimization. The QGS is integrated to determine local minima and the local minimum with the best generalization performance is chosen as the optimal solution. The second approach uses the QGS together with a projected gradient system (PGS). The PGS is a nonlinear dynamical system, defined based on the optimization problem that searches the components of the feasible region for solutions. Lyapunov theory is used to prove the stability of PGS and QGS and their stability under presence of measurement noise

    Modeling and Monitoring of the Dynamic Response of Railroad Bridges using Wireless Smart Sensors

    Railroad bridges form an integral part of railway infrastructure in the USA, carrying approximately 40 % of the ton-miles of freight. The US Department of Transportation (DOT) forecasts current rail tonnage to increase up to 88 % by 2035. Within the railway network, a bridge occurs every 1.4 miles of track, on average, making them critical elements. In an effort to accommodate safely the need for increased load carrying capacity, the Federal Railroad Association (FRA) announced a regulation in 2010 that the bridge owners must conduct and report annual inspection of all the bridges. The objective of this research is to develop appropriate modeling and monitoring techniques for railroad bridges toward understanding the dynamic responses under a moving train. To achieve the research objective, the following issues are considered specifically. For modeling, a simple, yet effective, model is developed to capture salient features of the bridge responses under a moving train. A new hybrid model is then proposed, which is a flexible and efficient tool for estimating bridge responses for arbitrary train configurations and speeds. For monitoring, measured field data is used to validate the performance of the numerical model. Further, interpretation of the proposed models showed that those models are efficient tools for predicting response of the bridge, such as fatigue and resonance. Finally, fundamental software, hardware, and algorithm components are developed for providing synchronized sensing for geographically distributed networks, as can be found in railroad bridges.
