A survey of intrusion detection techniques in Cloud
Cloud computing provides scalable, virtualized on-demand services to the end users with greater flexibility and lesser infrastructural investment. These services are provided over the Internet using known networking protocols, standards and formats under the supervision of different managements. Existing bugs and vulnerabilities in underlying technologies and legacy protocols tend to open doors for intrusion. This paper, surveys different intrusions affecting availability, confidentiality and integrity of Cloud resources and services. It examines proposals incorporating Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) in Cloud and discusses various types and techniques of IDS and Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), and recommends IDS/IPS positioning in Cloud architecture to achieve desired security in the next generation networks

Building an Emulation Environment for Cyber Security Analyses of Complex Networked Systems
Computer networks are undergoing a phenomenal growth, driven by the rapidly
increasing number of nodes constituting the networks. At the same time, the
number of security threats on Internet and intranet networks is constantly
growing, and the testing and experimentation of cyber defense solutions
requires the availability of separate, test environments that best emulate the
complexity of a real system. Such environments support the deployment and
monitoring of complex mission-driven network scenarios, thus enabling the study
of cyber defense strategies under real and controllable traffic and attack
scenarios. In this paper, we propose a methodology that makes use of a
combination of techniques of network and security assessment, and the use of
cloud technologies to build an emulation environment with adjustable degree of
affinity with respect to actual reference networks or planned systems. As a
byproduct, starting from a specific study case, we collected a dataset
consisting of complete network traces comprising benign and malicious traffic,
which is feature-rich and publicly available
Outsmarting Network Security with SDN Teleportation
Software-defined networking is considered a promising new paradigm, enabling
more reliable and formally verifiable communication networks. However, this
paper shows that the separation of the control plane from the data plane, which
lies at the heart of Software-Defined Networks (SDNs), introduces a new
vulnerability which we call \emph{teleportation}. An attacker (e.g., a
malicious switch in the data plane or a host connected to the network) can use
teleportation to transmit information via the control plane and bypass critical
network functions in the data plane (e.g., a firewall), and to violate security
policies as well as logical and even physical separations. This paper
characterizes the design space for teleportation attacks theoretically, and
then identifies four different teleportation techniques. We demonstrate and
discuss how these techniques can be exploited for different attacks (e.g.,
exfiltrating confidential data at high rates), and also initiate the discussion
of possible countermeasures. Generally, and given today's trend toward more
intent-based networking, we believe that our findings are relevant beyond the

Secure Cloud-Edge Deployments, with Trust
Assessing the security level of IoT applications to be deployed to
heterogeneous Cloud-Edge infrastructures operated by different providers is a
non-trivial task. In this article, we present a methodology that permits to
express security requirements for IoT applications, as well as infrastructure
security capabilities, in a simple and declarative manner, and to automatically
obtain an explainable assessment of the security level of the possible
application deployments. The methodology also considers the impact of trust
relations among different stakeholders using or managing Cloud-Edge
infrastructures. A lifelike example is used to showcase the prototyped
implementation of the methodology
