    A hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm-based semantic foundation for sustainable distributed manufacturing systems

    Rising energy prices, increasing maintenance costs, and strict environmental regimes have augmented the already existing pressure on the contemporary manufacturing environment. Although the decentralization of supply chain has led to rapid advancements in manufacturing systems, finding an efficient supplier simultaneously from the pool of available ones as per customer requirement and enhancing the process planning and scheduling functions are the predominant approaches still needed to be addressed. Therefore, this paper aims to address this issue by considering a set of gear manufacturing industries located across India as a case study. An integrated classifier-assisted evolutionary multi-objective evolutionary approach is proposed for solving the objectives of makespan, energy consumption, and increased service utilization rate, interoperability, and reliability. To execute the approach initially, text-mining-based supervised machine-learning models, namely Decision Tree, Naïve Bayes, Random Forest, and Support Vector Machines (SVM) were adopted for the classification of suppliers into task-specific suppliers. Following this, with the identified suppliers as input, the problem was formulated as a multi-objective Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model. We then proposed a Hybrid Multi-Objective Moth Flame Optimization algorithm (HMFO) to optimize process planning and scheduling functions. Numerical experiments have been carried out with the formulated problem for 10 different instances, along with a comparison of the results with a Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) to illustrate the feasibility of the approach.The project is funded by Department of Science and Technology, Science and Engineering Research Board (DST-SERB), Statutory Body Established through an Act of Parliament: SERB Act 2008, Government of India with Sanction Order No ECR/2016/001808, and also by FCT–Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology within the R&D Units Projects Scopes: UIDB/00319/2020, UIDP/04077/2020, and UIDB/04077/2020

    A critical analysis of job shop scheduling in context of industry 4.0

    Scheduling plays a pivotal role in the competitiveness of a job shop facility. The traditional job shop scheduling problem (JSSP) is centralized or semi-distributed. With the advent of Industry 4.0, there has been a paradigm shift in the manufacturing industry from traditional scheduling to smart distributed scheduling (SDS). The implementation of Industry 4.0 results in increased flexibility, high product quality, short lead times, and customized production. Smart/intelligent manufacturing is an integral part of Industry 4.0. The intelligent manufacturing approach converts renewable and nonrenewable resources into intelligent objects capable of sensing, working, and acting in a smart environment to achieve effective scheduling. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of centralized and decentralized/distributed JSSP techniques in the context of the Industry 4.0 environment. Firstly, centralized JSSP models and problem-solving methods along with their advantages and limitations are discussed. Secondly, an overview of associated techniques used in the Industry 4.0 environment is presented. The third phase of this paper discusses the transition from traditional job shop scheduling to decentralized JSSP with the aid of the latest research trends in this domain. Finally, this paper highlights futuristic approaches in the JSSP research and application in light of the robustness of JSSP and the current pandemic situation

    Investigation of Alternatives for Up-fitting Lead Time Reduction for Vehicle Assembly

    In this research, an investigation of the lead time reduction and cost control for vehicles with special parts ordered by the customers was performed. The production flow is not continuous for the installation of these parts. There is always time wasted waiting for the units. The aim of this research was to discover revised procedures to reduce lead time and costs. Value stream mapping was the tool to analyze the process. Flexsim(TM) was the software used to simulate different production cases. The results from the simulations indicate that under the current production volume, moving the program back to the plant is the best option since it will reduce the waiting time between the plant and installation facility. Furthermore, it can reduce the overall manufacturing lead times and improve cost effectiveness. If the production volume increases, space, equipment and management limitations may require plants to use alternative production models and these limits should be studied in future research

    Automated and Optimized Project Scheduling Using BIM

    Construction project scheduling is one of the most important tools for project managers in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. The Construction schedules allow project managers to track and manage the time, cost, and quality (i.e. Project Management Triangle) of projects. Developing project schedules is almost always troublesome, since it is heavily dependent on project planners’ knowledge of work packages, on-the-job-experience, planning capability, and oversight. Having a thorough understanding of the project geometries and their internal interacting stability relations plays a significant role in generating practical construction sequencing. On the other hand, the new concept of embedding all the project information into a three-dimensional (3D) representation of a project (a.k.a. Building Information Model or BIM) has recently drawn the attention of the construction industry. In this dissertation, the author demonstrates how to develop and extend the usage of the Genetic Algorithm (GA) not only to generate construction schedules, but to optimize the outcome for different objectives (i.e. cost, time, and job-site movements). The basis for the GA calculations is the embedded data available in BIM of the project that should be provided as an input to the algorithm. By reading through the geometry information in the 3D model and receiving more specific information about the project and its resources from the user, the algorithm generates different construction schedules. The output Pareto Frontier graphs, 4D animations, and schedule wellness scores will help the user to find the most suitable construction schedule for the given project

    Experimental Investigations on Machining of CFRP Composites: Study of Parametric Influence and Machining Performance Optimization

    Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composites are characterized by their excellent mechanical properties (high specific strength and stiffness, light weight, high damping capacity etc.) as compared to conventional metals, which results in their increased utilization especially for aircraft and aerospace applications, automotive, defense as well as sporting industries. With increasing applications of CFRP composites, determining economical techniques of production is very important. However, as compared to conventional metals, machining behavior of composites is somewhat different. This is mainly because these materials behave extremely abrasive during machining operations. Machining of CFRP appears difficult due to their material discontinuity, inhomogeneity and anisotropic nature. Moreover, the machining behavior of composites largely depends on the fiber form, the fiber content, fiber orientations of composites and the variability of matrix material. Difficulties are faced during machining of composites due to occurrence of various modes of damages like fiber breakage, matrix cracking, fiber–matrix debonding and delamination. Hence, adequate knowledge and in-depth understanding of the process behavior is indeed necessary to identify the most favorable machining environment in view of various requirements of process performance yields. In this context, present work attempts to investigate aspects of machining performance optimization during machining (turning and drilling) of CFRP composites. In case of turning experiments, the following parameters viz. cutting force, Material Removal Rate (MRR), roughness average (Ra) and maximum tool-tip temperature generated during machining have been considered as process output responses. In case of drilling, the following process performance features viz. load (thrust), torque, roughness average (of the drilled hole) and delamination factor (entry and exit both) have been considered. Attempt has been made to determine the optimal machining parameters setting that can simultaneously satisfy aforesaid response features up to the desired extent. Using Fuzzy Inference System (FIS), multiple response features have been aggregated to obtain an equivalent single performance index called Multi-Performance Characteristic Index (MPCI). A nonlinear regression model has been established in which MPCI has been represented as a function of the machining parameters under consideration. The aforesaid regression model has been considered as the fitness function, and finally optimized by evolutionary algorithms like Harmony Search (HS), Teaching-Learning Based Optimization (TLBO), and Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA) etc. However, the limitation of these algorithms is that they assume a continuous search within parametric domain. These algorithms can give global optima; but the predicted optimal setting may not be possible to adjust in the machine/setup. Since, in most of the machines/setups, provision is given only to adjust factors (process input parameters) at some discrete levels. On the contrary, Taguchi method is based on discrete search philosophy in which predicted optimal setting can easily be achieved in reality.However, Taguchi method fails to solve multi-response optimization problems. Another important aspect that comes into picture while dealing with multi-response optimization problems is the existence of response correlation. Existing Taguchi based integrated optimization approaches (grey-Taguchi, utility-Taguchi, desirability function based Taguchi, TOPSIS, MOORA etc.) may provide erroneous outcome unless response correlation is eliminated. To get rid of that, the present work proposes a PCA-FuzzyTaguchi integrated optimization approach for correlated multi-response optimization in the context of machining CFRP composites. Application potential of aforementioned approach has been compared over various evolutionary algorithms
