    Towards transnational interoperable PPDR communications: the European ISI cloud network

    The European Council has been stressing the need for interoperability among technologies used for Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) communications across Europe for a long time. Nevertheless, while the introduction of TETRA and TETRAPOL technologies in the last two decades has increased the possibility to talk cross agency internally in a country, cross border communication for the public safety forces is not well solved as of today. This paper describes the communications interoperability solution that is being developed in the framework of the ISITEP project. This solution, referred to as the European Inter-System Interface (ISI) Cloud Network, aims to integrate the PPDR national/regional infrastructures to allow migration (i.e., roaming) and communication services between networks within a secure framework. The ISI Cloud Network involves, among other components, the specification of a new ISI interface to be deployed over IP transport networks and the development of a number of different gateways to cover the use of TETRA and TETRAPOL technologies as well as the use of legacy TETRA ISI by some networks.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Architecture for Mobile Heterogeneous Multi Domain Networks

    Multi domain networks can be used in several scenarios including military, enterprize networks, emergency networks and many other cases. In such networks, each domain might be under its own administration. Therefore, the cooperation among domains is conditioned by individual domain policies regarding sharing information, such as network topology, connectivity, mobility, security, various service availability and so on. We propose a new architecture for Heterogeneous Multi Domain (HMD) networks, in which one the operations are subject to specific domain policies. We propose a hierarchical architecture, with an infrastructure of gateways at highest-control level that enables policy based interconnection, mobility and other services among domains. Gateways are responsible for translation among different communication protocols, including routing, signalling, and security. Besides the architecture, we discuss in more details the mobility and adaptive capacity of services in HMD. We discuss the HMD scalability and other advantages compared to existing architectural and mobility solutions. Furthermore, we analyze the dynamic availability at the control level of the hierarchy

    Policy issues in interconnecting networks

    AAA architectures applied in multi-domain IMS (IP multimedia subsystem)

    There is a group of communication services that use\ud resources from multiple domains in order to deliver their service.\ud Authorization of the end-user is important for such services,\ud because several domains are involved. There are no current\ud solutions for delivering authentication, authorization and\ud accounting (AAA) to multi-domain services. In our study we\ud present two architectures for the delivery of AAA to such\ud services. The architectures are analyzed on their qualitative\ud aspects. A result of this analysis is that direct interconnection of\ud AAA servers is an effective architectural solution. In current\ud multi-domain IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architectures,\ud direct interconnection of AAA servers, such as the Home\ud Subscriber Servers (HSS), is not yet possible. In this paper we\ud argue and recommend to extend the IMS specification by adding\ud a new interface to HSS in order to support the direct\ud interconnection of HSS/AAA servers located in different IMS\ud administrative domains

    Managed ecosystems of networked objects

    Small embedded devices such as sensors and actuators will become the cornerstone of the Future Internet. To this end, generic, open and secure communication and service platforms are needed in order to be able to exploit the new business opportunities these devices bring. In this paper, we evaluate the current efforts to integrate sensors and actuators into the Internet and identify the limitations at the level of cooperation of these Internet-connected objects and the possible intelligence at the end points. As a solution, we propose the concept of Managed Ecosystem of Networked Objects, which aims to create a smart network architecture for groups of Internet-connected objects by combining network virtualization and clean-slate end-to-end protocol design. The concept maps to many real-life scenarios and should empower application developers to use sensor data in an easy and natural way. At the same time, the concept introduces many new challenging research problems, but their realization could offer a meaningful contribution to the realization of the Internet of Things
