This thesis represents only a small section of the different issue and topics that I was involved since 2010. Yet, it shows one of the consequences of my engagements during the past few years. Over these years, I had the historical opportunity to read and witness the rise and the fall of the important theories and results that are cited in this study and my involvements in these topics became a part of my whole academic life. Fuzzy SetTheory has come a long way since it was formally introduced by L.A. Zadeh in his classic paper entitled ‘Fuzzy Sets’ published in the journal ‘information and Control’ in the year 1965. Since that time the subject has been applied to every branch of knowledge. Many research investigations by mathematicians, scientists and social scientists, computer and management scientists and engineers all over the world have been made in the theory and applications of the subject. Applications of fuzzy logic and fuzzy set theory in decision-making, Pattern recognition, Image processing, Control systems, Neural networks, Genetic algorithm and in many other areas has given significant results.Digital copy of ThesisUniversity of Kashmir

New dynamic signal control methods such as fuzzy logic and artificial intelligence developed recently mainly focused on isolated intersection. Adaptive signal control based on fuzzy logic control (FLC) determines the duration and sequence that traffic signal should stay in a certain state, before switching to the next state (Trabia et al. 1999, Pham 2013). The amount of arriving and waiting vehicles are quantized into fuzzy variables and fuzzy rules are used to determine if the duration of the current state should be extended. The fuzzy logic controller showed to be more flexible than fixed controllers and vehicle actuated controllers, allowing traffic to flow more smoothly. The FLC does not possess the ability to handle various uncertainties especially in real world traffic control. Therefore it is not best suited for stochastic nature problems such as traffic signal timing optimization. However, probabilistic logic is the best choice to handle the uncertainties containing both stochastic and fuzzy features (Pappis and Mamdani 1977) Probabilistic fuzzy logic control is developed for the signalised control of a diamond interchange, where the signal phasing, green time extension and ramp metering are decided in response to real time traffic conditions, which aim at improving traffic flows on surface streets and highways. The probabilistic fuzzy logic for diamond interchange (PFLDI) comprises three modules: probabilistic fuzzy phase timing (PFPT) that controls the green time extension process of the current running phase, phase selection (PSL) which decides the next phase based on the pre-setup phase logic by the local transport authority and, probabilistic fuzzy ramp-metering (PFRM) that determines on-ramp metering rate based on traffic conditions of the arterial streets and highways. We used Advanced Interactive Microscopic Simulator for Urban and Non-Urban Network (AIMSUN) software for diamond interchange modeling and performance measure of effectiveness for the PFLDI algorithm. PFLDI was compared with actuated diamond interchange (ADI) control based on ALINEA algorithm and conventional fuzzy logic diamond interchange algorithm (FLDI). Simulation results show that the PFLDI surpasses the traffic actuated and conventional fuzzy models with lower System Total Travel Time, Average Delay and improvements in Downstream Average Speed and Downstream Average Delay. On the other hand, little attention has been given in recent years to the delays experienced by cyclists in urban transport networks. When planning changes to traffic signals or making other network changes, the value of time for cycling trips is rarely considered. The traditional approach to road management has been to only focus on improving the carrying capacity relating to vehicles, with an emphasis on maximising the speed and volume of motorised traffic moving around the network. The problem of cyclist delay has been compounded by the fact that the travel time for cyclists have been lower than those for vehicles, which affects benefit–cost ratios and effectively provides a disincentive to invest in cycling issues compared with other modes. The issue has also been influenced by the way in which traffic signals have been set up and operated. Because the primary stresses on an intersection tend to occur during vehicle (commuter) peaks in the morning and afternoon, intersections tend to be set up and coordinated to allow maximum flow during these peaks. The result is that during off-peak periods there is often spare capacity that is underutilised. Phasing and timings set up for peaks may not provide the optimum benefits during off-peak times. This is particularly important to cyclists during lunch-time peaks, when vehicle volumes are low and cyclist volumes are high. Cyclists can end up waiting long periods of time as a result of poor signal phasing, rather than due to the demands of other road users being placed on the network. The outcome of this study will not only reduce the traffic congestion during peak hours but also improve the cyclists’ safety at a typical diamond interchange

New perspectives on realism, tractability, and complexity in economics

Fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms are used to rework more realistic (and more complex) models of competitive markets. The resulting equilibria are significantly different from the ones predicted from the usual static analysis; the methodology solves the Walrasian problem of how markets can reach equilibrium, starting with firms trading at disparate prices. The modified equilibria found in these complex market models involve some mutual self-restraint on the part of the agents involved, relative to economically rational behaviour. Research (using similar techniques) into the evolution of collaborative behaviours in economics, and of altruism generally, is summarized; and the joint significance of these two bodies of work for public policy is reviewed. The possible extension of the fuzzy/ genetic methodology to other technical aspects of economics (including international trade theory, and development) is also discussed, as are the limitations to the usefulness of any type of theory in political domains. For the latter purpose, a more differentiated concept of rationality, appropriate to ill-structured choices, is developed. The philosophical case for laissez-faire policies is considered briefly; and the prospects for change in the way we ‘do economics’ are analysed

    Dynamical tachyons on fuzzy spheres

We study the spectrum of off-diagonal fluctuations between displaced fuzzy spheres in the BMN plane wave matrix model. The displacement is along the plane of the fuzzy spheres. We find that when two fuzzy spheres intersect at angles classical tachyons develop and that the spectrum of these modes can be computed analytically. These tachyons can be related to the familiar Nielsen-Olesen instabilities in Yang-Mills theory on a constant magnetic background. Many features of the problem become more apparent when we compare with maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills on a sphere, of which this system is a truncation. We also set up a simple oscillatory trajectory on the displacement between the fuzzy spheres and study the dynamics of the modes as they become tachyonic for part of the oscillations. We speculate on their role regarding the possible thermalization of the system.Comment: 34 pages, 4 figures; v2: 35 pages, expanded sec. 4.3, added reference

Understanding and Design of an Arduino-based PID Controller

    Get PDF
This thesis presents research and design of a Proportional, Integral, and Derivative (PID) controller that uses a microcontroller (Arduino) platform. The research part discusses the structure of a PID algorithm with some motivating work already performed with the Arduino-based PID controller from various fields. An inexpensive Arduino-based PID controller designed in the laboratory to control the temperature, consists of hardware parts: Arduino UNO, thermoelectric cooler, and electronic components while the software portion includes C/C++ programming. The PID parameters for a particular controller are found manually. The role of different PID parameters is discussed with the subsequent comparison between different modes of PID controllers. The designed system can effectively measure the temperature with an error of ± 0.6℃ while a stable temperature control with only slight deviation from the desired value (setpoint) is achieved. The designed system and concepts learned from the control system serve in pursuing inexpensive and precise ways to control physical parameters within a desired range in our laboratory

Dynamic mapping strategies for interactive art installations: an embodied combined HCI HRI HHI approach

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a theoretical framework for dealing with the paradigm of interactivity in new media art, and how the broad use of the term in different research fields can lead to some misunderstandings. The paper addresses a conceptual view on how we can implement interaction in new media art from an embodied approach that unites views from HCI, HRI and HHI. The focus is on an intuitive mapping of a multitude of sensor data and to extend upon this using the paradigm of (1) finite state machines (FSM) to address dynamic mapping strategies, (2) mediality to address aisthesis and (3) embodiment to address valid mapping strategies originated from natural body movements. The theory put forward is illustrated by a case study
