    An agile and adaptive holonic architecture for manufacturing control

    In the last decades significant changes in the manufacturing environment have been noticed: moving from a local economy towards a global economy, with markets asking for products with high quality at lower costs, highly customised and with short life cycle. In this environment, the manufacturing enterprises, to avoid the risk to lose competitiveness, search to answer more closely to the customer demands, by improving their flexibility and agility, while maintaining their productivity and quality. Actually, the dynamic response to emergence is becoming a key issue, due to the weak response of the traditional manufacturing control systems to unexpected disturbances, mainly because of the rigidity of their control architectures. In these circumstances, the challenge is to develop manufacturing control systems with autonomy and intelligence capabilities, fast adaptation to the environment changes, more robustness against the occurrence of disturbances, and easier integration of manufacturing resources and legacy systems. Several architectures using emergent concepts and technologies have been proposed, in particular those based in the holonic manufacturing paradigm. Holonic manufacturing is a paradigm based in the ideas of the philosopher Arthur Koestler, who proposed the word holon to describe a basic unit of organisation in biological and social systems. A holon, as Koestler devised the term, is an identifiable part of a (manufacturing) system that has a unique identity, yet is made up of sub-ordinate parts and in turn is part of a larger whole. The introduction of the holonic manufacturing paradigm allows a new approach to the manufacturing problem, bringing the advantages of modularity, decentralisation, autonomy, scalability, and re-use of software components. This dissertation intends to develop an agile and adaptive manufacturing control architecture to face the current requirements imposed to the manufacturing enterprises. The architecture proposed in this dissertation addresses the need for the fast reaction to disturbances at the shop floor level, increasing the agility and flexibility of the enterprise, when it works in volatile environments, characterised by the frequent occurrence of unexpected disturbances. The proposed architecture, designated by ADACOR (ADAptive holonic COntrol aRchitecture for distributed manufacturing systems), is based in the holonic manufacturing paradigm, build upon autonomous and cooperative holons, allowing the development of manufacturing control applications that present all the features of decentralised and holonic systems. ADACOR holonic architecture introduces an adaptive control that balances dynamically between a more centralised structure and a more decentralised one, allowing to combine the global production optimisation with agile reaction to unexpected disturbances. Nas últimas décadas têm-se assistido a mudanças significativas no ambiente de fabrico: evoluindo de uma economia local para um economia global, com os mercados a procurar produtos com elevada qualidade a baixos preços, altamente customizados e com um ciclo de vida curto. Neste ambiente, as empresas de manufactura, para evitar o risco de perda de competitividade, procuram responder às solicitações dos clientes, melhorando a sua flexibilidade e agilidade, mantendo os mesmos índices de produtividade e qualidade. Na verdade, a resposta dinâmica à emergência está a tornar-se num assunto chave, devido `a fraca resposta a perturbações que os sistemas de controlo de fabrico tradicionais apresentam, principalmente devido à rigidez das suas arquitecturas de controlo. Nestas circunstâncias, é fundamental o desenvolvimento de sistemas de controlo de fabrico com capacidades de autonomia e inteligência, rápida adaptação às mudanças, maior robustez à ocorrência de perturbações e fácil integração de recursos físicos e sistemas legados. Diversas arquitecturas usando conceitos e tecnologias emergentes têm sido propostas, em particular algumas baseadas no paradigma da produção holónica. O paradigma da produção holónica é inspirado nas ideias de Arthur Koestler, que propôs a palavra holon para descrever uma unidade básica de organização de sistemas biológicos e sociais. Um holon, de acordo com a definição de Koestler, é uma parte identificável do sistema com identidade única, composta por sub-partes e fazendo simultaneamente parte do todo. A introdução do paradigma da produção holónica permite uma nova abordagem aos sistemas de controlo de fabrico, trazendo vantagens de modularidade, descentralização, autonomia, escalabilidade e reutilização de componentes. Esta dissertação pretende desenvolver uma arquitectura de controlo ágil e adaptativa que suporte os requisitos actuais impostos `as empresas de manufactura. A arquitectura proposta visa a necessidade de uma reacção rápida a perturbações, ao nível da planta fabril, melhorando a flexibilidade e agilidade da empresa quando esta opera em ambientes voláteis, caracterizados pela ocorrência frequente de perturbações inesperadas. A arquitectura proposta, designada por ADACOR (ADAptive holonic COntrol aRchitecture for distributed manufacturing systems), é baseada no paradigma da produção holónica e construída sobre holons autónomos e cooperativos, permitindo o desenvolvimento de aplicações de controlo de fabrico que apresentem todas as características dos sistemas descentralizados e holónicos. A arquitectura holónica ADACOR introduz um controlo adaptativo que balança dinamicamente entre uma estrutura de controlo mais centralizada e uma mais descentralizada, permitindo combinar a optimização da produção com a ágil reacção a perturbações

    The Augmented Learner : The pivotal role of multimedia enhanced learning within a foresight-based learning model designed to accelerate the delivery of higher levels of learner creativity

    The central theme for this dissertation lies at the intersection of multisensory technology enhanced learning, the field of foresight and transformative pedagogy and their role in helping to develop greater learner creativity. These skills will be key to meeting the needs of the projected growing role of the creative class within the emerging global workforce structure and the projected growth in R&D and the advancement of human-machine resource management. Over the past two decades, we have traversed from the Industrial Age through the Information Age into what we now call postnormal times, manifested partly in Industry 4.0. It is widely considered that the present education system in countries with developed economies is not optimised for delivering the much-needed creative skills, which are prominent amongst the critical 21st C skills required by the creative class, (also known as creatives), which will be increasingly dominant in terms of near future employability. Consequently, there will be a potential shortfall of creatives unless this issue is rapidly addressed. To ensure that the creative skills I aimed to enhance were relevant and aligned with emerging demands of the changing landscape, I deconstructed the critical dimensions, context, and concept of creativity in postnormal times as well as undertaking in-depth research on the potential future workscape and the future of education and learning, applying a comprehensive foresight approach to the latter using a 2030-2040 horizon. Based upon the outcomes of these studies I designed an experimental integrative learning system that I have applied, researched, and evolved over the past 4 years with over 150 students at PhD and master’s level. The system is aimed at generating higher levels of creative engagement and development through a focus on increased immersion and creativity-inducing approaches. The system, which I call the Living Learning System, is based upon eight integrated elements, supported by course development pillars aimed at optimizing learner future skill competencies and levels of creativity for which I apply severalevaluation techniques and metrics. Accordingly, as the central hypothesis of this dissertation, I argue that by integrating the critical elements of the Living Learning System, such as emerging multisensory technology enhanced learning coupled with optimised transformative and experiential learning approaches, framed within the field of foresight, with its futures focus and decentralised thinking approaches, students increase their ability to be creative. This increased ability is based on the student attaining a richer level of personal ambience through deeper immersion generated through higher incidence of self-direction, constructivism-based blended pedagogy, futures literacy, and a balance of decentralised and systems-based thinking, as well as cognitive and social platforms aimed at optimizing learner creative achievement. This dissertation demonstrates how the application of the combined elements of the Living Learning System, with its futures focus and its ensuing transdisciplinary curricula and courses, can provide a clear path towards significantly increased learner creativity. The findings of the quantitative, questionnaire-based research set out in detail in Chapter 9, together with the performance and creativity evaluation models applied against the selected case studies of student projects substantiate the validity of the hypothesis that the application of the Living Learning System with its futures focus leads to increased creativity in line with the needs of the postnormal era.publishedVersio

    Smart mobile systems – microsystems, smart textiles, smart implants, sensor-controlled medical devices – together with related body, local and wide-area networks up to cloud services, have become important enablers for telemedicine and the next generation of healthcare services. The multilateral benefits of pHealth technologies offer enormous potential for all stakeholder communities, not only in terms of improvements in medical quality and industrial competitiveness, but also for the management of healthcare costs and, last but not least, the improvement of patient experience. This book presents the proceedings of pHealth 2021, the 18th in a series of conferences on wearable micro and nano technologies for personalized health with personal health management systems, hosted by the University of Genoa, Italy, and held as an online event from 8 – 10 November 2021. The conference focused on digital health ecosystems in the transformation of healthcare towards personalized, participative, preventive, predictive precision medicine (5P medicine). The book contains 46 peer-reviewed papers (1 keynote, 5 invited papers, 33 full papers, and 7 poster papers).     A Phenomenological approach to media art environments: The Immersive art experience and the Finnish art scene

    This research focuses on immersive art, defined as a multimedia experience where visitors interact with artwork whilst immersed in a range of sensory experiences. In this dissertation, I investigate the immersive art experience from the perspective of art history, social theory, and media studies situated within a phenomenological theoretical framework. I present a comparative analysis of forms of immersive spatiality, including projected moving-image art, spatial environments, participatory installations, video art installations and interactive environments in the international art scene. One of my objectives is to emphasise the role of video art in the development of interactive and immersive art environments. The growing importance of spectators for giving meaning to the artwork allows immersivity to be analysed in relation to the notions of spectacle and spectatorship. I connect disciplines, practices and concepts by adopting principles from Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological writings. Spatiality and motility are pivotal points in immersive experiences. Immersive art, as an embodied mutual experience, materialises the phenomenological concepts of spectatorship, corporeality, motility, porosity, chiasm, and encounter. I have selected a group of relevant Finnish artists from different generations to characterise the development of media art and, particularly, immersive media art in an international context. The group includes Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Lauri Astala, Laura Beloff, Hanna Haaslahti, Tuomas A. Laitinen, Erkka Nissinen, and Marjatta Oja. I examine the historical dissemination of phenomenology in Finland and a renewed interest in the 1990s which coincided with the spatialisation of video art and the emergence of immersivity. I also investigate the opening of Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art and its impact on Finnish culture, and the recent Amos Rex Museum, specifically built for immersive exhibitions. Regarding the unstable nature of media art, I analyse the changes in displaying art collections and exhibitions, the new commitments of art museums and the innovative directions taken by media conservators. My examination of immersive art, with its performativity and transience, reveals environmentally friendly and sustainable aspects.Fenomenologinen tulokulma mediataideympäristöihin. Immersiivinen taidekokemus ja Suomen taidekenttä Tämä tutkimus käsittelee immersiivistä taidetta multimediaalisena kokemuksena. Immersiossa kävijät ovat erilaisten aistimellisten kokemusten ympäröiminä vuorovaikutuksessa taiteen kanssa. Tutkin väitöskirjassani immersiivistä taidekokemusta fenomenologisessa teoriakehyksessä taidehistorian, yhteiskuntateorian ja mediatutkimuksen näkökulmasta. Esitän vertailevan analyysin immersiivisistä tilallisuuden muodoista, joihin sisällytän liikkuvan kuvan projisoinnit, tilateokset, osallistavat installaatiot, videoinstallaatiot ja interaktiiviset ympäristöt kansainvälisen taidekentän ilmiöinä. Yhtenä pyrkimyksenäni on painottaa videotaiteen merkitystä interaktiivisen ja immersiivisen taiteen kehityksessä. Katsojien kasvava rooli taideteoksen merkityksen muodostuksessa tarjoaa perustan immersion analyysille nimenomaan spektaakkelin ja katsojuuden viitekehyksessä. Yhdistän eri tieteenaloja, käytäntöjä ja käsitteitä toisiinsa Maurice Merleau-Pontyn fenomenologisten kirjoitusten avulla. Tilallisuus ja liike ovat immersiivisten kokemusten ytimessä. Jaettuna ruumiillisena kokemuksena immersiivinen taide ilmentää materiaalisesti fenomenologisia katsojuuden, ruumiillisuuden, liikkeessä olemisen, huokoisuuden, kiasman ja kohtaamisen käsitteitä. Olen valinnut joukon eri sukupolvia edustavia suomalaistaiteilijoita hahmot-taakseni mediataiteen ja erityisesti immersiivisen mediataiteen kansainvälisiä kehityskulkuja. Heihin lukeutuvat Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Lauri Astala, Laura Beloff, Hanna Haaslahti, Tuomas A. Laitinen, Erkka Nissinen ja Marjatta Oja. Käsittelen fenomenologian saapumista Suomeen sekä siihen 1990-luvulla videotaiteen tilallistumisen ja immersion esiin nousun yhteydessä uudelleen virinnyttä mielenkiintoa. Tarkastelen myös Nykytaiteen museo Kiasman perustamista ja sen vaikutusta suomalaiseen kulttuuriin, samoin kuin vastikään avattua Amos Rex -taidemuseota, joka on rakennettu erityisesti immersiivisiä näyttelyitä silmällä pitäen. Analysoin muutoksia taidekokoelmien ja näyttelyiden esillepanossa, taidemuseoiden uudenlaisia sitoumuksia ja mediataiteen kuratoinnin uutta luovia suuntia suhteessa mediataiteen nopeasti muuttuvaan luonteeseen.
