    Linking recorded data with emotive and adaptive computing in an eHealth environment

    Telecare, and particularly lifestyle monitoring, currently relies on the ability to detect and respond to changes in individual behaviour using data derived from sensors around the home. This means that a significant aspect of behaviour, that of an individuals emotional state, is not accounted for in reaching a conclusion as to the form of response required. The linked concepts of emotive and adaptive computing offer an opportunity to include information about emotional state and the paper considers how current developments in this area have the potential to be integrated within telecare and other areas of eHealth. In doing so, it looks at the development of and current state of the art of both emotive and adaptive computing, including its conceptual background, and places them into an overall eHealth context for application and development

From the past few years, it also became an attractive research area in visual computing. From the computational point of view, by far speech and text have been the most considered cues of information for analyzing personality. However, recently there has been an increasing interest from the computer vision community in analyzing personality from visual data. Recent computer vision approaches are able to accurately analyze human faces, body postures and behaviors, and use these information to infer apparent personality traits. Because of the overwhelming research interest in this topic, and of the potential impact that this sort of methods could have in society, we present in this paper an up-to-date review of existing vision-based approaches for apparent personality trait recognition. We describe seminal and cutting edge works on the subject, discussing and comparing their distinctive features and limitations. Future venues of research in the field are identified and discussed. Furthermore, aspects on the subjectivity in data labeling/evaluation, as well as current datasets and challenges organized to push the research on the field are reviewed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    An embodied conversational agent for intelligent web interaction on pandemic crisis communication

    In times of crisis, an effective communication mechanism is paramount in providing accurate and timely information to the community. In this paper we study the use of an intelligent embodied conversational agent (EGA) as the front end interface with the public for a Crisis Communication Network Portal (CCNet). The proposed system, CCNet, is an integration of the intelligent conversation agent, AINI, and an Automated Knowledge Extraction Agent (AKEA). AKEA retrieves first hand information from relevant sources such as government departments and news channels.     A Review of Automated Speech-Based Interaction for Cognitive Screening

    Language, speech and conversational behaviours reflect cognitive changes that may precede physiological changes and offer a much more cost-effective option for detecting preclinical cognitive decline. Artificial intelligence and machine learning have been established as a means to facilitate automated speech-based cognitive screening through automated recording and analysis of linguistic, speech and conversational behaviours. In this work, a scoping literature review was performed to document and analyse current automated speech-based implementations for cognitive screening from the perspective of human–computer interaction. At this stage, the goal was to identify and analyse the characteristics that define the interaction between the automated speech-based screening systems and the users, potentially revealing interaction-related patterns and gaps. In total, 65 articles were identified as appropriate for inclusion, from which 15 articles satisfied the inclusion criteria. The literature review led to the documentation and further analysis of five interaction-related themes: (i) user interface, (ii) modalities, (iii) speech-based communication, (iv) screening content and (v) screener. Cognitive screening through speech-based interaction might benefit from two practices: (1) implementing more multimodal user interfaces that facilitate—amongst others—speech-based screening and (2) introducing the element of motivation in the speech-based screening process.publishedVersio

This in turn will benefit the design of cognitive robots capable of learning to handle and manipulate objects and tools autonomously, to cooperate and communicate with other robots and humans, and to adapt their abilities to changing internal, environmental, and social conditions. Four key areas of research challenges are discussed, specifically for the issues related to the understanding of: 1) how agents learn and represent compositional actions; 2) how agents learn and represent compositional lexica; 3) the dynamics of social interaction and learning; and 4) how compositional action and language representations are integrated to bootstrap the cognitive system. The review of specific issues and progress in these areas is then translated into a practical roadmap based on a series of milestones. These milestones provide a possible set of cognitive robotics goals and test scenarios, thus acting as a research roadmap for future work on cognitive developmental robotics.Peer reviewe

    Low-level grounding in a multimodal mobile service robot conversational system using graphical models

    The main task of a service robot with a voice-enabled communication interface is to engage a user in dialogue providing an access to the services it is designed for. In managing such interaction, inferring the user goal (intention) from the request for a service at each dialogue turn is the key issue. In service robot deployment conditions speech recognition limitations with noisy speech input and inexperienced users may jeopardize user goal identification. In this paper, we introduce a grounding state-based model motivated by reducing the risk of communication failure due to incorrect user goal identification. The model exploits the multiple modalities available in the service robot system to provide evidence for reaching grounding states. In order to handle the speech input as sufficiently grounded (correctly understood) by the robot, four proposed states have to be reached. Bayesian networks combining speech and non-speech modalities during user goal identification are used to estimate probability that each grounding state has been reached. These probabilities serve as a base for detecting whether the user is attending to the conversation, as well as for deciding on an alternative input modality (e.g., buttons) when the speech modality is unreliable. The Bayesian networks used in the grounding model are specially designed for modularity and computationally efficient inference. The potential of the proposed model is demonstrated comparing a conversational system for the mobile service robot RoboX employing only speech recognition for user goal identification, and a system equipped with multimodal grounding.     Developmental Bootstrapping of AIs

    Although some current AIs surpass human abilities in closed artificial worlds such as board games, their abilities in the real world are limited. They make strange mistakes and do not notice them. They cannot be instructed easily, fail to use common sense, and lack curiosity. They do not make good collaborators. Mainstream approaches for creating AIs are the traditional manually-constructed symbolic AI approach and generative and deep learning AI approaches including large language models (LLMs). These systems are not well suited for creating robust and trustworthy AIs. Although it is outside of the mainstream, the developmental bootstrapping approach has more potential. In developmental bootstrapping, AIs develop competences like human children do. They start with innate competences. They interact with the environment and learn from their interactions. They incrementally extend their innate competences with self-developed competences. They interact and learn from people and establish perceptual, cognitive, and common grounding. They acquire the competences they need through bootstrapping. However, developmental robotics has not yet produced AIs with robust adult-level competences. Projects have typically stopped at the Toddler Barrier corresponding to human infant development at about two years of age, before their speech is fluent. They also do not bridge the Reading Barrier, to skillfully and skeptically draw on the socially developed information resources that power current LLMs. The next competences in human cognitive development involve intrinsic motivation, imitation learning, imagination, coordination, and communication. This position paper lays out the logic, prospects, gaps, and challenges for extending the practice of developmental bootstrapping to acquire further competences and create robust, resilient, and human-compatible AIs.Comment: 102 pages, 29 figure

    Robots that Say ‘No’. Affective Symbol Grounding and the Case of Intent Interpretations

In this experimental proof-of-concept study, we show how nonreferential negation words, typically belonging to a child's first ten words, may be acquired. A child-like humanoid robot is deployed in speech-wise unconstrained interaction with naïve human participants. In agreement with psycholinguistic observations, we corroborate the hypothesis that affect plays a pivotal role in the socially distributed acquisition process where the adept conversation partner provides linguistic interpretations of the affective displays of the less adept speaker. Negation words are prosodically salient within intent interpretations that are triggered by the learner's display of affect. From there they can be picked up and used by the budding language learner which may involve the grounding of these words in the very affective states that triggered them in the first place. The pragmatic analysis of the robot's linguistic performance indicates that the correct timing of negative utterances is essential for the listener to infer the meaning of otherwise ambiguous negative utterances. In order to assess the robot's performance thoroughly comparative data from psycholinguistic studies of parent-child dyads is needed highlighting the need for further interdisciplinary work.Peer reviewe
