This paper focuses on the study field of Multimedia in Economic Practise which has been taught at the University of Economics in Prague since 2011. This study field has its first graduates which is the reason for a re-examination of the profile of graduates according to the structure of subjects in the study plan. This paper describes evolution of the study field, its content, main idea and structure of its students. It presents two main groups of occupations for graduates with dependence on requirements for student’s additional independent activities beyond the study. The analytical part shows five examples of comparison of the course relevance according to the opinion of students and academic staff. The conclusions from the survey will enable academic staff of the study field to the reconsider the future development of the study field

Patterns of Intersemiotic Cohesion in the Moving Image Text

This paper investigates intersemiotic cohesion in the moving image text popularly known as film discourse. The investigation aimed at identifying the interaction pattern of visual verbal strands in an unfolding text of selected video films. The corpus of the study consists of six movie pictures and corresponding excerpts of conversation(s) from selected film scripts. Baumgarten (2008) theory of visual verbal cohesion and Ngamsa (2012) methodological consideration were adopted for the annotation and matching of deictic devices as both explicit-- invitro and implicit--invivo . The findings of the paper therefore show that interaction of visual and verbal semiotic strands is always achieved at the point of convergence and at the instance of reference items, pronouns, adjectives and other extra linguistic features—signs and existents. The study finally recommends that film directors, screenplay writers and text linguists should explore the use of intersemiotic cohesive devices for explication of the moving image text. Key words: Intersemiotic, Cohesion, Moving Image Text and Film Discourse

A Study on the Subtitle Translation of A Long Cherished Dream From the Perspective of Multimodal Discourse Analysis

The documentary is an important medium for cross-cultural communication, and its subtitle translation has gradually become increasingly important. The emergence of multimodal discourse analysis theory extends the study of single discourse to multimodal discourse, and at the same time broadens the depth and breadth of subtitle translation research. This paper selects the subtitle translation of the documentary A Long Cherished Dream as a case study for analysis. Based on the multimodal discourse analysis framework proposed by Zhang Delu, this paper explores how translators translate the subtitles according to the coordination of various modalities to convey the overall meaning of the documentary at the cultural level, the contextual level, the content level and the expression level respectively. The main research results are as follows. Firstly, translators should pay attention to cultural phenomena at the cultural level and the literal translation method is usually adopted. Secondly, the translator should consider the contextual background to adopt an addition or omission translation method at the contextual level. Thirdly, the translator can adopt the omission translation method to maximize the complementary effect of the English subtitles and multiple modalities at the content level. This study will be expected to be useful for the subtitle translation study of documentaries

    Multimedia news storytelling: semiotic-narratological foundations

    Get PDF
Research about multimedia news storytelling contains several empirical studies, but these lack a theoretical foundation. This article proposes a transdisciplinary foundation of multimedia news storytelling, based on semiotics and narratology. First, the bases of multimedia news storytelling are explained using a hypothetical-deductive methodology and the semiotic categories of ideation-composition-reception. Second, based on narratology, the multimedia storytelling process is described, starting from the pre-compositive stage, in which journalists assemble the stories, to the final stage of navigation by the participatory users. The combination of both theoretical foundations allows us to explain the nature of multimedia news storytelling, based on three elements: 1) syntactic coherence between the multiple languages used, 2) open and collective authorship, and 3) participatory reception by the audience
