    Rollover prevention and path following of a scaled autonomous vehicle using nonlinear model predictive control

    Vehicle safety remains an important topic in the automotive industry due to the large number of vehicle accidents each year. One of the causes of vehicle accidents is due to vehicle instability phenomena. Vehicle instability can occur due to unexpected road profile changes, during full braking, obstacle avoidance or severe manoeuvring. Three main instability phenomena can be distinguished: the yaw-rate instability, the rollover and the jack-knife phenomenon. The main goal of this study is to develop a yaw-rate and rollover stability controller of an Autonomous Scaled Ground Vehicle (ASGV) using Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC). Open Source Software (OSS) known as Automatic Control and Dynamic Optimisation (ACADO) is used to design and simulate the NMPC controller based on an eight Degree of Freedom (8 DOF) nonlinear vehicle model with Pacejka tire model. Vehicle stability limit were determined using load transfer ratio (LTR). Double lane change (DLC) steering manoeuvres were used to calculate the LTR. The simulation results show that the designed NMPC controller is able to track a given trajectory while preventing the vehicle from rolling over and spinning out by respecting given constraints. A maximum trajectory tracking error of 0.1 meters (on average) is reported. To test robustness of the designed NMPC controller to model mismatch, four simulation scenarios are done. Simulation results show that the controller is robust to model mismatch. To test disturbance rejection capability of the controller, two simulations are performed, with pulse disturbances of 0.02 radians and 0.05 radians. Simulations results show that the controller is able to reject the 0.02 radians disturbance. The controller is not able to reject the 0.05 radians disturbance

    Real-Time Collision Imminent Steering Using One-Level Nonlinear Model Predictive Control

    Automotive active safety features are designed to complement or intervene a human driver's actions in safety critical situations. Existing active safety features, such as adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist, are able to exploit the ever growing sensor and computing capabilities of modern automobiles. An emerging feature, collision imminent steering, is designed to perform an evasive lane change to avoid collision if the vehicle believes collision cannot be avoided by braking alone. This is a challenging maneuver, as the expected highway setting is characterized by high speeds, narrow lane restrictions, and hard safety constraints. To perform such a maneuver, the vehicle may be required to operate at the nonlinear dynamics limits, necessitating advanced control strategies to enforce safety and drivability constraints. This dissertation presents a one-level nonlinear model predictive controller formulation to perform a collision imminent steering maneuver in a highway setting at high speeds, with direct consideration of safety criteria in the highway environment and the nonlinearities characteristic of such a potentially aggressive maneuver. The controller is cognizant of highway sizing constraints, vehicle handling capability and stability limits, and time latency when calculating the control action. In simulated testing, it is shown the controller can avoid collision by conducting a lane change in roughly half the distance required to avoid collision by braking alone. In preliminary vehicle testing, it is shown the control formulation is compatible with the existing perception pipeline, and prescribed control action can safely perform a lane change at low speed. Further, the controller must be suitable for real-time implementation and compatible with expected automotive control architecture. Collision imminent steering, and more broadly collision avoidance, control is a computationally challenging problem. At highway speeds, the required time for action is on the order of hundreds of milliseconds, requiring a control formulation capable of operating at tens of Hertz. To this extent, this dissertation investigates the computational expense of such a controller, and presents a framework for designing real-time compatible nonlinear model predictive controllers. Specifically, methods for numerically simulating the predicted vehicle response and response sensitivities are compared, their cross interaction with trajectory optimization strategy are considered, and the resulting mapping to a parallel computing hardware architecture is investigated. The framework systematically evaluates the underlying numerical optimization problem for bottlenecks, from which it provides alternative solutions strategies to achieve real-time performance. As applied to the baseline collision imminent steering controller, the procedure results in an approximate three order of magnitude reduction in compute wall time, supporting real-time performance and enabling preliminary testing on automotive grade hardware.PHDMechanical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Safety of autonomous vehicles: A survey on Model-based vs. AI-based approaches

    The growing advancements in Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) have emphasized the critical need to prioritize the absolute safety of AV maneuvers, especially in dynamic and unpredictable environments or situations. This objective becomes even more challenging due to the uniqueness of every traffic situation/condition. To cope with all these very constrained and complex configurations, AVs must have appropriate control architectures with reliable and real-time Risk Assessment and Management Strategies (RAMS). These targeted RAMS must lead to reduce drastically the navigation risks. However, the lack of safety guarantees proves, which is one of the key challenges to be addressed, limit drastically the ambition to introduce more broadly AVs on our roads and restrict the use of AVs to very limited use cases. Therefore, the focus and the ambition of this paper is to survey research on autonomous vehicles while focusing on the important topic of safety guarantee of AVs. For this purpose, it is proposed to review research on relevant methods and concepts defining an overall control architecture for AVs, with an emphasis on the safety assessment and decision-making systems composing these architectures. Moreover, it is intended through this reviewing process to highlight researches that use either model-based methods or AI-based approaches. This is performed while emphasizing the strengths and weaknesses of each methodology and investigating the research that proposes a comprehensive multi-modal design that combines model-based and AI approaches. This paper ends with discussions on the methods used to guarantee the safety of AVs namely: safety verification techniques and the standardization/generalization of safety frameworks

    Longitudinal vehicle dynamics : a comparison of physical and data-driven models under large-scale real-world driving conditions

    Mathematical models of vehicle dynamics will form essential components of future autonomous vehicles. They may be used within inverse or forward control loops, or within predictive learning systems. Often, nonlinear physical models are used in this context, which, though conceptually simple (especially for decoupled, longitudinal dynamics), may be computationally costly to parameterise and also inaccurate if they omit vehicle-specific dynamics. In this study we sought to determine the relative merits of a commonly used nonlinear physical model of vehicle dynamics versus data-driven models in large-scale real-world driving conditions. To this end, we compared the performance of a standard nonlinear physical model with a linear state-space model and a neural network model. The large-scale experimental data was obtained from two vehicles; a Lancia Delta car and a Jeep Renegade sport utility vehicle. The vehicles were driven on regular, public roads, during normal human driving, across a range of road gradients. Both data-driven models outperformed the physical model. The neural network model performed best for both vehicles; the state-space model performed almost as well as the neural network for the Lancia Delta, but fell short for the Jeep Renegade whose dynamics were more strongly nonlinear. Our results suggest that the linear data-driven model gives a good trade-off in accuracy and simplicity, whilst the neural network model is most accurate and is extensible to more nonlinear operating conditions, and finally that the widely used physical model may not be the best choice for control design

Considerando las premisas mencionadas, esta Tesis Doctoral tiene como objetivo el diseño y la implementación de un marco para lograr Sistemas de Conducción Automatizados (ADS) considerando aspectos cruciales, como la ejecución en tiempo real, la robustez, el rango operativo y el ajuste sencillo de parámetros. Para desarrollar las aportaciones relacionadas con este trabajo, se lleva a cabo un estudio del estado del arte actual en tecnologías de alta automatización de conducción. Luego, se propone un método de dos pasos que aborda la validación de ambos modelos de vehículos de simulación y ADS. Se introducen nuevas formulaciones predictivas basadas en modelos para mejorar la seguridad y el confort en el proceso de seguimiento de trayectorias. Por último, se evalúan escenarios de mal funcionamiento para mejorar la seguridad en entornos urbanos, proponiendo una estrategia alternativa de estimación de posicionamiento para minimizar las condiciones de riesgo

    Egocentric Chunking in the Predictive Brain : A Cognitive Basis of Expert Performance in High-Speed Sports

First publication by Frontiers Media.What principles and mechanisms allow humans to encode complex 3D information, and how can it be so fast, so accurately and so flexibly transformed into coordinated action? How do these processes work when developed to the limit of human physiological and cognitive capacity—as they are in high-speed sports, such as alpine skiing or motor racing? High-speed sports present not only physical challenges, but present some of the biggest perceptual-cognitive demands for the brain. The skill of these elite athletes is in many ways an attractive model for studying human performance “in the wild”, and its neurocognitive basis. This article presents a framework theory for how these abilities may be realized in high-speed sports. It draws on a careful analysis of the case of the motorsport athlete, as well as theoretical concepts from: (1) cognitive neuroscience of wayfinding, steering, and driving; (2) cognitive psychology of expertise; (3) cognitive modeling and machine learning; (4) human-in-the loop modellling in vehicle system dynamics and human performance engineering; (5) experimental research (in the laboratory and in the field) on human visual guidance. The distinctive contribution is the way these are integrated, and the concept of chunking is used in a novel way to analyze a high-speed sport. The mechanisms invoked are domain-general, and not specific to motorsport or the use of a particular type of vehicle (or any vehicle for that matter); the egocentric chunking hypothesis should therefore apply to any dynamic task that requires similar core skills. It offers a framework for neuroscientists, psychologists, engineers, and computer scientists working in the field of expert sports performance, and may be useful in translating fundamental research into theory-based insight and recommendations for improving real-world elite performance. Specific experimental predictions and applicability of the hypotheses to other sports are discussed.Peer reviewe

    Drivers overtaking cyclists and pedestrians: Modeling road-user behavior for traffic safety

    In a world aiming to shift to more sustainable modes of transportation, vulnerable road users (VRUs) like cyclists and pedestrians are still confronted with significant barriers to safety, particularly on rural roads where overtaking maneuvers represent a frequent and dangerous interaction with motorized traffic. If drivers misjudge their kinematics, even near-crashes without physical contact can harm the perceived safety of the VRU, which may decrease the willingness to continue cycling or walking on these roads. Crash risks when overtaking VRUs exist in different overtaking phases: when approaching the VRU, steering out, passing, and eventually returning. To make overtaking VRUs safer, improvements to policymaking, infrastructure, and vehicles are needed. However, these improvements need models that can describe or predict road-user behavior in overtaking, which was the objective of this thesis. Based on data sets obtained from a test-track experiment, field-test studies, and naturalistic studies, this thesis developed behavioral models for both objective and perceived safety of drivers and VRUs in different overtaking phases. The results indicate that drivers’ and VRUs’ behavior is mainly influenced by their highest crash or injury risk. The descriptive models showed that a close oncoming vehicle could reduce a driver’s safety margins to the VRU in all phases. Furthermore, the VRU behavior may affect the driver’s behavior; for instance, through lane positioning and, for pedestrians, walking direction. Infrastructure design and policymaking should focus on preventing overtaking in areas where oncoming vehicles are hard to estimate and enforcing sufficient clearances to the cyclist, stratified by speed. The predictive models can help vehicle safety systems adapt to drivers to become more acceptable, for instance, when assisting drivers in the decision to overtake or not. They may further help optimize road networks’ objective and perceived safety

    Neural Networks: Training and Application to Nonlinear System Identification and Control

    This dissertation investigates training neural networks for system identification and classification. The research contains two main contributions as follow:1. Reducing number of hidden layer nodes using a feedforward componentThis research reduces the number of hidden layer nodes and training time of neural networks to make them more suited to online identification and control applications by adding a parallel feedforward component. Implementing the feedforward component with a wavelet neural network and an echo state network provides good models for nonlinear systems.The wavelet neural network with feedforward component along with model predictive controller can reliably identify and control a seismically isolated structure during earthquake. The network model provides the predictions for model predictive control. Simulations of a 5-story seismically isolated structure with conventional lead-rubber bearings showed significant reductions of all response amplitudes for both near-field (pulse) and far-field ground motions, including reduced deformations along with corresponding reduction in acceleration response. The controller effectively regulated the apparent stiffness at the isolation level. The approach is also applied to the online identification and control of an unmanned vehicle. Lyapunov theory is used to prove the stability of the wavelet neural network and the model predictive controller. 2. Training neural networks using trajectory based optimization approachesTraining neural networks is a nonlinear non-convex optimization problem to determine the weights of the neural network. Traditional training algorithms can be inefficient and can get trapped in local minima. Two global optimization approaches are adapted to train neural networks and avoid the local minima problem. Lyapunov theory is used to prove the stability of the proposed methodology and its convergence in the presence of measurement errors. The first approach transforms the constraint satisfaction problem into unconstrained optimization. The constraints define a quotient gradient system (QGS) whose stable equilibrium points are local minima of the unconstrained optimization. The QGS is integrated to determine local minima and the local minimum with the best generalization performance is chosen as the optimal solution. The second approach uses the QGS together with a projected gradient system (PGS). The PGS is a nonlinear dynamical system, defined based on the optimization problem that searches the components of the feasible region for solutions. Lyapunov theory is used to prove the stability of PGS and QGS and their stability under presence of measurement noise
