Analysis of Large-Scale SVM Training Algorithms for Language and Speaker Recognition
This paper compares a set of large scale support vector machine (SVM) training algorithms for language and speaker recognition tasks.We analyze five approaches for training phonetic and acoustic SVM models for language recognition. We compare the performance of these approaches as a function of the training time required by each of them to reach convergence, and we discuss their scalability towards large corpora. Two of these algorithms can be used in speaker recognition to train a SVM that classifies pairs of utterances as either belonging to the same speaker or to two different speakers. Our results show that the accuracy of these algorithms is asymptotically equivalent, but they have different behavior with respect to the time required to converge. Some of these algorithms not only scale linearly with the training set size, but are also able to give their best results after just a few iterations. Distributed Support Vector Machine Learning
Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are used for a growing number of applications. A fundamental constraint on SVM learning is the management of the training set. This is because the order of computations goes as the square of the size of the training set. Typically, training sets of 1000 (500 positives and 500 negatives, for example) can be managed on a PC without hard-drive thrashing. Training sets of 10,000 however, simply cannot be managed with PC-based resources. For this reason most SVM implementations must contend with some kind of chunking process to train parts of the data at a time (10 chunks of 1000, for example, to learn the 10,000). Sequential and multi-threaded chunking methods provide a way to run the SVM on large datasets while retaining accuracy. The multi-threaded distributed SVM described in this thesis is implemented using Java RMI, and has been developed to run on a network of multi-core/multi-processor computers
A real-time human-robot interaction system based on gestures for assistive scenarios
Natural and intuitive human interaction with robotic systems is a key point to develop robots assisting people in an easy and effective way. In this paper, a Human Robot Interaction (HRI) system able to recognize gestures usually employed in human non-verbal communication is introduced, and an in-depth study of its usability is performed. The system deals with dynamic gestures such as waving or nodding which are recognized using a Dynamic Time Warping approach based on gesture specific features computed from depth maps. A static gesture consisting in pointing at an object is also recognized. The pointed location is then estimated in order to detect candidate objects the user may refer to. When the pointed object is unclear for the robot, a disambiguation procedure by means of either a verbal or gestural dialogue is performed. This skill would lead to the robot picking an object in behalf of the user, which could present difficulties to do it by itself. The overall system — which is composed by a NAO and Wifibot robots, a KinectTM v2 sensor and two laptops — is firstly evaluated in a structured lab setup. Then, a broad set of user tests has been completed, which allows to assess correct performance in terms of recognition rates, easiness of use and response times.Postprint (author's final draft
Enabling Massive Deep Neural Networks with the GraphBLAS
Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have emerged as a core tool for machine learning.
The computations performed during DNN training and inference are dominated by
operations on the weight matrices describing the DNN. As DNNs incorporate more
stages and more nodes per stage, these weight matrices may be required to be
sparse because of memory limitations. The GraphBLAS.org math library standard
was developed to provide high performance manipulation of sparse weight
matrices and input/output vectors. For sufficiently sparse matrices, a sparse
matrix library requires significantly less memory than the corresponding dense
matrix implementation. This paper provides a brief description of the
mathematics underlying the GraphBLAS. In addition, the equations of a typical
DNN are rewritten in a form designed to use the GraphBLAS. An implementation of
the DNN is given using a preliminary GraphBLAS C library. The performance of
the GraphBLAS implementation is measured relative to a standard dense linear
algebra library implementation. For various sizes of DNN weight matrices, it is
shown that the GraphBLAS sparse implementation outperforms a BLAS dense

Acceleration of stereo-matching on multi-core CPU and GPU
This paper presents an accelerated version of a
dense stereo-correspondence algorithm for two different parallelism
enabled architectures, multi-core CPU and GPU. The
algorithm is part of the vision system developed for a binocular
robot-head in the context of the CloPeMa 1 research project.
This research project focuses on the conception of a new clothes
folding robot with real-time and high resolution requirements
for the vision system. The performance analysis shows that
the parallelised stereo-matching algorithm has been significantly
accelerated, maintaining 12x and 176x speed-up respectively
for multi-core CPU and GPU, compared with non-SIMD singlethread
CPU. To analyse the origin of the speed-up and gain
deeper understanding about the choice of the optimal hardware,
the algorithm was broken into key sub-tasks and the performance
was tested for four different hardware architectures
Hikester - the event management application
Today social networks and services are one of the most important part of our
everyday life. Most of the daily activities, such as communicating with
friends, reading news or dating is usually done using social networks. However,
there are activities for which social networks do not yet provide adequate
support. This paper focuses on event management and introduces "Hikester". The
main objective of this service is to provide users with the possibility to
create any event they desire and to invite other users. "Hikester" supports the
creation and management of events like attendance of football matches, quest
rooms, shared train rides or visit of museums in foreign countries. Here we
discuss the project architecture as well as the detailed implementation of the
system components: the recommender system, the spam recognition service and the
parameters optimizer
Analyzing collaborative learning processes automatically
In this article we describe the emerging area of text classification research focused on the problem of collaborative learning process analysis both from a broad perspective and more specifically in terms of a publicly available tool set called TagHelper tools. Analyzing the variety of pedagogically valuable facets of learners’ interactions is a time consuming and effortful process. Improving automated analyses of such highly valued processes of collaborative learning by adapting and applying recent text classification technologies would make it a less arduous task to obtain insights from corpus data. This endeavor also holds the potential for enabling substantially improved on-line instruction both by providing teachers and facilitators with reports about the groups they are moderating and by triggering context sensitive collaborative learning support on an as-needed basis. In this article, we report on an interdisciplinary research project, which has been investigating the effectiveness of applying text classification technology to a large CSCL corpus that has been analyzed by human coders using a theory-based multidimensional coding scheme. We report promising results and include an in-depth discussion of important issues such as reliability, validity, and efficiency that should be considered when deciding on the appropriateness of adopting a new technology such as TagHelper tools. One major technical contribution of this work is a demonstration that an important piece of the work towards making text classification technology effective for this purpose is designing and building linguistic pattern detectors, otherwise known as features, that can be extracted reliably from texts and that have high predictive power for the categories of discourse actions that the CSCL community is interested in
