Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a non-traditional machining process widely used to machine geometrically complex and hard materials. In EDM, selection of optimal EDM parameters is important to have high quality products and increase productivity. However, one of the major issues is to obtain better machining performance at optimal value of these machining parameters. Modelling and optimization of EDM parameters have been considered to identify optimal EDM parameters that would lead to better EDM performance. Due to the complexity and uncertainty of the machining process, computational approaches have been implemented to solve the EDM problem. Thus, this study conducted a comprehensive investigation concerning the influence of EDM parameters on material removal rate (MRR), surface roughness (Ra) and dimensional accuracy (DA) through an experimental design. The experiment was performed based on full factorial design of experiment (DOE) with added center points of pulse on time (Ton), pulse off time (Toff), peak current (Ip) and servo voltage (Sv). In the EDM optimization, glowworm swarm optimization (GSO) algorithm was implemented. However, previous works indicated that GSO algorithm has always been trapped in the local optima solution and is slow in convergence. Therefore, this study developed a new hybrid artificial fish and glowworm swarm optimization (AF-GSO) algorithm to overcome the weaknesses of GSO algorithm in order to have a better EDM performance. For the modeling process, four types of regression models, namely multiple linear regression (MLR), two factor interaction (2FI), multiple polynomial regression (MPR) and stepwise regression (SR) were developed. These regression models were implemented in the optimization process as an objective function equation. Analysis of the optimization proved that AF-GSO algorithm has successfully outperformed the standard GSO algorithm. 2FI model of AF-GSO optimization for MRR and DA gave optimal solutions of 0.0042g/min and 0.00129%, respectively. On the other hand, the SR model for Ra of AF-GSO optimization gave the optimal solution of 1.8216p,s. Overall, it can be concluded that AF-GSO algorithm has successfully improved the quality and productivity of the EDM problems

An Integrated Multi-Time-Scale Modeling for Solar Irradiance Forecasting Using Deep Learning

For short-term solar irradiance forecasting, the traditional point forecasting methods are rendered less useful due to the non-stationary characteristic of solar power. The amount of operating reserves required to maintain reliable operation of the electric grid rises due to the variability of solar energy. The higher the uncertainty in the generation, the greater the operating-reserve requirements, which translates to an increased cost of operation. In this research work, we propose a unified architecture for multi-time-scale predictions for intra-day solar irradiance forecasting using recurrent neural networks (RNN) and long-short-term memory networks (LSTMs). This paper also lays out a framework for extending this modeling approach to intra-hour forecasting horizons thus, making it a multi-time-horizon forecasting approach, capable of predicting intra-hour as well as intra-day solar irradiance. We develop an end-to-end pipeline to effectuate the proposed architecture. The performance of the prediction model is tested and validated by the methodical implementation. The robustness of the approach is demonstrated with case studies conducted for geographically scattered sites across the United States. The predictions demonstrate that our proposed unified architecture-based approach is effective for multi-time-scale solar forecasts and achieves a lower root-mean-square prediction error when benchmarked against the best-performing methods documented in the literature that use separate models for each time-scale during the day. Our proposed method results in a 71.5% reduction in the mean RMSE averaged across all the test sites compared to the ML-based best-performing method reported in the literature. Additionally, the proposed method enables multi-time-horizon forecasts with real-time inputs, which have a significant potential for practical industry applications in the evolving grid.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, under review for journal submissio

Identification of pathway and gene markers using enhanced directed random walk for multiclass cancer expression data

Cancer markers play a significant role in the diagnosis of the origin of cancers and in the detection of cancers from initial treatments. This is a challenging task owing to the heterogeneity nature of cancers. Identification of these markers could help in improving the survival rate of cancer patients, in which dedicated treatment can be provided according to the diagnosis or even prevention. Previous investigations show that the use of pathway topology information could help in the detection of cancer markers from gene expression. Such analysis reduces its complexity from thousands of genes to a few hundreds of pathways. However, most of the existing methods group different cancer subtypes into just disease samples, and consider all pathways contribute equally in the analysis process. Meanwhile, the interaction between multiple genes and the genes with missing edges has been ignored in several other methods, and hence could lead to the poor performance of the identification of cancer markers from gene expression. Thus, this research proposes enhanced directed random walk to identify pathway and gene markers for multiclass cancer gene expression data. Firstly, an improved pathway selection with analysis of variances (ANOVA) that enables the consideration of multiple cancer subtypes is performed, and subsequently the integration of k-mean clustering and average silhouette method in the directed random walk that considers the interaction of multiple genes is also conducted. The proposed methods are tested on benchmark gene expression datasets (breast, lung, and skin cancers) and biological pathways. The performance of the proposed methods is then measured and compared in terms of classification accuracy and area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC). The results indicate that the proposed methods are able to identify a list of pathway and gene markers from the datasets with better classification accuracy and AUC. The proposed methods have improved the classification performance in the range of between 1% and 35% compared with existing methods. Cell cycle and p53 signaling pathway were found significantly associated with breast, lung, and skin cancers, while the cell cycle was highly enriched with squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma

Handling Class Imbalance Using Swarm Intelligence Techniques, Hybrid Data and Algorithmic Level Solutions

This research focuses mainly on the binary class imbalance problem in data mining. It investigates the use of combined approaches of data and algorithmic level solutions. Moreover, it examines the use of swarm intelligence and population-based techniques to combat the class imbalance problem at all levels, including at the data, algorithmic, and feature level. It also introduces various solutions to the class imbalance problem, in which swarm intelligence techniques like Stochastic Diffusion Search (SDS) and Dispersive Flies Optimisation (DFO) are used. The algorithms were evaluated using experiments on imbalanced datasets, in which the Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used as a classifier. SDS was used to perform informed undersampling of the majority class to balance the dataset. The results indicate that this algorithm improves the classifier performance and can be used on imbalanced datasets. Moreover, SDS was extended further to perform feature selection on high dimensional datasets. Experimental results show that SDS can be used to perform feature selection and improve the classifier performance on imbalanced datasets. Further experiments evaluated DFO as an algorithmic level solution to optimise the SVM kernel parameters when learning from imbalanced datasets. Based on the promising results of DFO in these experiments, the novel approach was extended further to provide a hybrid algorithm that simultaneously optimises the kernel parameters and performs feature selection
