    Multi-objective routing optimization using evolutionary algorithms

    Wireless ad hoc networks suffer from several limitations, such as routing failures, potentially excessive bandwidth requirements, computational constraints and limited storage capability. Their routing strategy plays a significant role in determining the overall performance of the multi-hop network. However, in conventional network design only one of the desired routing-related objectives is optimized, while other objectives are typically assumed to be the constraints imposed on the problem. In this paper, we invoke the Non-dominated Sorting based Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) and the MultiObjective Differential Evolution (MODE) algorithm for finding optimal routes from a given source to a given destination in the face of conflicting design objectives, such as the dissipated energy and the end-to-end delay in a fully-connected arbitrary multi-hop network. Our simulation results show that both the NSGA-II and MODE algorithms are efficient in solving these routing problems and are capable of finding the Pareto-optimal solutions at lower complexity than the ’brute-force’ exhaustive search, when the number of nodes is higher than or equal to 10. Additionally, we demonstrate that at the same complexity, the MODE algorithm is capable of finding solutions closer to the Pareto front and typically, converges faster than the NSGA-II algorithm

    Evidence of coevolution in multi-objective evolutionary algorithms

    This paper demonstrates that simple yet important characteristics of coevolution can occur in evolutionary algorithms when only a few conditions are met. We find that interaction-based fitness measurements such as fitness (linear) ranking allow for a form of coevolutionary dynamics that is observed when 1) changes are made in what solutions are able to interact during the ranking process and 2) evolution takes place in a multi-objective environment. This research contributes to the study of simulated evolution in a at least two ways. First, it establishes a broader relationship between coevolution and multi-objective optimization than has been previously considered in the literature. Second, it demonstrates that the preconditions for coevolutionary behavior are weaker than previously thought. In particular, our model indicates that direct cooperation or competition between species is not required for coevolution to take place. Moreover, our experiments provide evidence that environmental perturbations can drive coevolutionary processes; a conclusion that mirrors arguments put forth in dual phase evolution theory. In the discussion, we briefly consider how our results may shed light onto this and other recent theories of evolution

    PSA based multi objective evolutionary algorithms

    It has generally been acknowledged that both proximity to the Pareto front and a certain diversity along the front, should be targeted when using evolutionary multiobjective optimization. Recently, a new partitioning mechanism, the Part and Select Algorithm (PSA), has been introduced. It was shown that this partitioning allows for the selection of a well-diversified set out of an arbitrary given set, while maintaining low computational cost. When embedded into an evolutionary search (NSGA-II), the PSA has significantly enhanced the exploitation of diversity. In this paper, the ability of the PSA to enhance evolutionary multiobjective algorithms (EMOAs) is further investigated. Two research directions are explored here. The first one deals with the integration of the PSA within an EMOA with a novel strategy. Contrary to most EMOAs, that give a higher priority to proximity over diversity, this new strategy promotes the balance between the two. The suggested algorithm allows some dominated solutions to survive, if they contribute to diversity. It is shown that such an approach substantially reduces the risk of the algorithm to fail in finding the Pareto front. The second research direction explores the use of the PSA as an archiving selection mechanism, to improve the averaged Hausdorff distance obtained by existing EMOAs. It is shown that the integration of the PSA into NSGA-II-I and Δ p -EMOA as an archiving mechanism leads to algorithms that are superior to base EMOAS on problems with disconnected Pareto fronts. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland

    A constrained multi-objective surrogate-based optimization algorithm

    Surrogate models or metamodels are widely used in the realm of engineering for design optimization to minimize the number of computationally expensive simulations. Most practical problems often have conflicting objectives, which lead to a number of competing solutions which form a Pareto front. Multi-objective surrogate-based constrained optimization algorithms have been proposed in literature, but handling constraints directly is a relatively new research area. Most algorithms proposed to directly deal with multi-objective optimization have been evolutionary algorithms (Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms -MOEAs). MOEAs can handle large design spaces but require a large number of simulations, which might be infeasible in practice, especially if the constraints are expensive. A multi-objective constrained optimization algorithm is presented in this paper which makes use of Kriging models, in conjunction with multi-objective probability of improvement (PoI) and probability of feasibility (PoF) criteria to drive the sample selection process economically. The efficacy of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated on an analytical benchmark function, and the algorithm is then used to solve a microwave filter design optimization problem

    Aesthetic design using multi-objective evolutionary algorithms

    The use of computational methodologies for the optimization of aesthetic parameters is not frequent mainly due to the fact that these parameters are not quantifiable and are subjective. In this work an interactive methodology based on the use of multi-objective optimization algorithms is proposed. This strategy associates the results of different optimization runs considering the existent quantifiable objectives and different sets of boundary conditions concerning the decision variables, as defined by an expert decision maker. The associated results will serve as initial population of solutions for a final optimization run. The idea is that a more global picture of potential ”good” solutions can be found. At the end this will facilitate the work of the expert decision maker since more solutions are available.
