    D6.6 Final report on the METIS 5G system concept and technology roadmap

    This deliverable presents the METIS 5G system concept which was developed to fulfil the requirements of the beyond-2020 connected information society and to extend today’s wireless communication systems to include new usage scenarios. The METIS 5G system concept consists of three generic 5G services and four main enablers. The three generic 5G services are Extreme Mobile BroadBand (xMBB), Massive Machine- Type Communications (mMTC), and Ultra-reliable Machine-Type Communication (uMTC). The four main enablers are Lean System Control Plane (LSCP), Dynamic RAN, Localized Contents and Traffic Flows, and Spectrum Toolbox. An overview of the METIS 5G architecture is given, as well as spectrum requirements and considerations. System-level evaluation of the METIS 5G system concept has been conducted, and we conclude that the METIS technical objectives are met.     Feasibility of wireless mesh for LTE-Advanced small cell access backhaul

    Mobiilidatan määrä on muutaman viime vuoden aikana kasvanut voimakkaasti ja nykyiset ennustukset arvioivat eksponentiaalista kasvukäyrää tulevien vuosien aikana. Matkapuhelinjärjestelmät ovat kehittyneet nopeasti tämän trendin ohjaamana. Neljännen sukupolven matkapuhelinverkkostandardien myötä, uudet innovaatiot kuten heterogeeniset verkkoratkaisut tarjoavat ratkaisun nykyisiin skaalautuvuus- ja kapasiteettiongelmiin. Joitain ilmeisiä ongelmakohtiakin kuitenkin esiintyy kuten heterogeenisten verkkojen runkokytkennän toteuttaminen. Yksi lupaavimmista tavoista toteuttaa heterogeenisten verkkojen runkokytkentä on langaton ja itseorganisoituva mesh-verkko. Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on varmistaa ja testata Nokia Siemens Networksin kehittämän mesh-runkokytkentäverkkokonseptin toteutettavuutta ja toiminnallisuutta soveltuvan validointijärjestelmän avulla. Kaiken kaikkiaan validointijärjestelmä ja sen päälle toteutettu mesh-protokolla toimivat moitteettomasti koko kehitys- ja testausprosessin ajan. Konseptin eri ominaisuudet ja mekanismit todistettiin täysin toteutettaviksi ja toimiviksi. Muutamalla lisäominaisuudella ja konseptiparannuksella mesh-konsepti tarjoaa houkuttelevan ja innovatiivisen ratkaisun heterogeenisten verkkojen runkokytkentään tulevaisuudessa.Mobile traffic demands and volumes are increasing and will dramatically keep increasing in the future. Along with this, mobile networks have evolved to better match this growth. Fourth generation cellular network standard introduced a set of new innovations for mobile communications, including support for heterogeneous network deployments. Heterogeneous networking is the likely answer for future mobile data capacity shortage but also poses some challenges, the most evident being how to implement the backhauling. One of the most promising heterogeneous network backhaul solutions is a meshed radio system with self-organizing features. The main scope of this master's thesis is the verification of functionality and feasibility of a wireless mesh backhaul concept developed by Nokia Siemens Networks through a proof-of-concept system. All in all, the wireless mesh proof-of-concept system performed strongly throughout the development and testing process. The different functionalities were proven to work successfully together. With further development and enhancement, the system concept displays extreme potential for a state-of-the-art heterogeneous network backhaul technology

    Unified security frameworks for integrated WiMAX and optical broadband access networks

    This dissertation proposes the integration of optical and Mobile Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) broadband access networks in order to combine the strengths of optical and wireless technologies and converge them seamlessly. To protect the access network security, this dissertation has developed the design of unified security frameworks for the proposed integrated optical and WiMAX broadband access networks.Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs) offers a popular broadband access solution, providing high bandwidth and long transmission range to meet users' fast evolving needs. WiMAX provides a wireless broadband solution and it supports mobility. This dissertation proposes a WiMAX over EPON network architecture to provide optical bandwidth for the WiMAX base station (BS). The dissertation also presents a unified security framework for the proposed WiMAX over EPON architecture using public key infrastructure (PKI) and extensible authentication protocol (EAP). The security framework could achieve efficient system management, enhance the system security, and realize unified key management. Furthermore, the dissertation introduces three handover scenarios in the WiMAX over EPON network and describes the corresponding handover schemes based on a pre-authentication method and the communication framework of the ranging step. The proposed handover mechanisms can simplify and accelerate the handover process, compared to the standard WiMAX handover scheme, while keeping the handover procedure secure.Free Space Optics (FSO) provides a relatively flexible optical wireless solution to provide gigabit bandwidth to areas where fiber is costly or hard to deploy. This dissertation also proposes an integrated Mobile WiMAX and FSO broadband access network and presents a unified EAP-based security framework. The dissertation then evaluates and compares the performance of EAP-Transport Layer Security (EAP-TLS) and EAP-Tunneled Transport layer Security (EAP-TTLS) for the FSO-WiMAX network, and also evaluates the impact of the point-to-point FSO link. Measurements show that, compared to EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS provides a more flexible, efficient, and secure way to protect the integrated FSO-WiMAX access network. Experiments conducted as part of investigation demonstrate that the point-to-point FSO link does not degrade the performance of EAP authentication in the integrated network

    The 5G Architecture Working Group as part of the 5GPPP Initiative is looking at capturing novel trends and key technological enablers for the realization of the 5G architecture. It also targets at presenting in a harmonized way the architectural concepts developed in various projects and initiatives (not limited to 5GPPP projects only) so as to provide a consolidated view on the technical directions for the architecture design in the 5G era. The first version of the white paper was released in July 2016, which captured novel trends and key technological enablers for the realization of the 5G architecture vision along with harmonized architectural concepts from 5GPPP Phase 1 projects and initiatives. Capitalizing on the architectural vision and framework set by the first version of the white paper, this Version 2.0 of the white paper presents the latest findings and analyses with a particular focus on the concept evaluations, and accordingly it presents the consolidated overall architecture design

    Heterogeneous Wireless Networks QoE Framework

    With the appearance of small cells and the move of mobile networks towards an all-IP 4G network, the convergence of these with Wi-Fi becomes a possibility which at the same time opens the path to achieve what will become 5G connectivity. This thesis describes the evolution of the different mainstream wireless technologies deployed around the world and how they can interact, and provides tools to use this convergence to achieve the foreseen requirements expected in a 5G environment and the ideal user experience. Several topics were identified as needing attention: handover between heterogeneous networks, security of large numbers of small cells connected via a variety of backhaul technologies to the core networks, edge content distribution to improve latency, improvement of the service provided in challenging radio environments and interference between licensed and unlicensed spectrum. Within these topics a contribution was made to improve the current status by analysing the unaddressed issues and coming up with potential improvements that were tested in trials or lab environment. The main contributions from the study have been: 1. A patent in the wireless security domain that reuses the fact that overlapping coverage is and will be available and protects against man in the middle attacks (Section 5.3). 2. A patent in the content distribution domain that manages to reduce the cost to deliver content within a mobile network by looking for the shortest path to the requested content (Section 6.3). 3. Improvements and interoperability test of 802.21 standard which improves the seamlessness of handovers (Section 4.2). 4. 2 infill trials which focus on how to improve the user experience in those challenging conditions (Sections 7.2 and 7.3). 5. An interference study with Wi-Fi 2.4GHz for the newly allocated spectrum for 4G (Section 8.2). This thesis demonstrates some of the improvements required in current wireless networks to evolve towards 5G and achieve the coverage, service, user experience, latency and security requirements expected from the next generation mobile technology

    The Future of LTE: The Femtocells perspective

    The Femtocell is one of the constituents of the LTE-Advanced technology components. It is categorized under the heterogeneous network's small cell concepts. In order to meet one of the most essential desires of mobile network - better coverage and enhanced system capacity, femtocell has offered and will offer most definitely a comprehensive solution to the service providers and subscribers alike. A detail presentation of the past, the present and the future of the femtocell technology has been studied and considered from the perspective of the LTE straight to LTE-Advanced; and tailored to the variants existence of the femto-cellular architecture. The much benefits of the femtocells does leave some points of thought for challenges in the existing deployments; to the users', a concern for privacy and confidentiality; and to the operators, most importantly, cost reduction, better coverage and security. That did not leave out the quest to have improved system deployment by considering issues like Interferences, Mobility and Handover, Backhauling, Self-Organizing Networks, Synchronization and so on. The aim of this thesis is to examine in a top-down approach the femtocells as an important component of the developing LTE-Advanced Technology, with essential projection into the future of the femto-cellular technology and what the future holds for its deployment for operators.     Mestrado em Engenharia de Computadores e TelemáticaPortugal é um dos países da União Europeia (UE) com maior taxa de penetração do Serviço Telefónico Móvel (STM) o que o torna num dos países mais interessantes para estudos relacionados com redes e serviços M´oveis. Neste contexto os estudos de mercado para determinar a taxa de penetração de um novo serviço / tecnologia tornam-se decisivos para as empresas uma vez que podem implicar custos elevados por vezes muito difíceis de rentabilizar. Apesar de já existir algum software que permite fazer modelação do comportamento de vários operadores de telecomunicações em determinados cenários, esses modelos têm em consideração padrões de comportamento teóricos e podem não estar inteiramente adaptados à realidade de cada mercado. Este trabalho procura melhorar esses padrões de comportamento fazendo uma análise retrospectiva ao mercado do STM desde a sua introdução em Portugal, em 1989, e assim fornecer dados mais precisos às ferramentas de modelação.Portugal is one of the European Union (EU) countries with the highest penetration rate of Mobile Telecommunications Service (MTS) and that fact makes it one of the most interesting countries for conducting studies related to mobile networks and services. In this context, doing market research to determine the penetration rate of a particular new service / technology becomes crucial for companies, since it may involve high costs sometimes very difficult to monetize. Although there is already some software that models the behavior of several telecom operators in certain scenarios, these models take into account patterns of behavior based only on theory which may not be fully adapted to each market reality. This work seeks to improve those patterns of behavior by a making a retrospective market analysis of the MTS, since its introduction in Portugal in 1989 thus providing more accurate data for modeling tools
