    Get PDF
Aerodynamic optimisation has become an indispensable component for any aerodynamic design over the past 60 years, with applications to aircraft, cars, trains, bridges, wind turbines, internal pipe flows, and cavities, among others, and is thus relevant in many facets of technology. With advancements in computational power, automated design optimisation procedures have become more competent, however, there is an ambiguity and bias throughout the literature with regards to relative performance of optimisation architectures and employed algorithms. This paper provides a well-balanced critical review of the dominant optimisation approaches that have been integrated with aerodynamic theory for the purpose of shape optimisation. A total of 229 papers, published in more than 120 journals and conference proceedings, have been classified into 6 different optimisation algorithm approaches. The material cited includes some of the most well-established authors and publications in the field of aerodynamic optimisation. This paper aims to eliminate bias toward certain algorithms by analysing the limitations, drawbacks, and the benefits of the most utilised optimisation approaches. This review provides comprehensive but straightforward insight for non-specialists and reference detailing the current state for specialist practitioners

Numerical aeroacoustic analysis of propeller designs

    Get PDF
As propeller-driven aircraft are the best choice for short/middle-haul flights but their acoustic emissions may require improvements to comply with future noise certification standards, this work aims to numerically evaluate the acoustics of different modern propeller designs. Overall sound pressure level and noise spectra of various blade geometries and hub configurations are compared on a surface representing the exterior fuselage of a typical large turboprop aircraft. Interior cabin noise is also evaluated using the transfer function of a Fokker 50 aircraft. A blade design operating at lower RPM and with the span-wise loading moved inboard is shown to be significantly quieter without severe performance penalties. The employed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method is able to reproduce the tonal content of all blades and its dependence on hub and blade design features

Design and numerical modeling of a pressurized airframe bulkhead joint

    Get PDF
The structural loading on a conceptual lap joint in the empennage of a civil aircraft has been investigated. The lap joint interfaces the end-pressure part-hemispherical bulkhead to the cylindrical fuselage. The pressure bulkhead is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic materials. The aim of the study is to present numerical results of the induced structural loading from the fuselage positive internal pressure differential and the localized high stress intensity field at the lap joint location. A methodology for the appropriate numerical approach to analyze the domed pressure bulkhead is presented. The results of the numerical investigation showed that the laminate loading levels calculated by the use of either initial sizing analytical formulas for pressurized domes or by the use of equilibrium nodal loading from finite element models of low fidelity compared to refined finite element analysis can be significantly underestimated. Some of the implications on carbon fiber reinforced plastic structural sizing at the specified location are developed

Exhaustive Search-based Model for Hybrid Sensor Network

A new model for a cluster of hybrid sensors network with multi sub-clusters is proposed. The model is in particular relevant to the early warning system in a large scale monitoring system in, for example, a nuclear power plant. It mainly addresses to a safety critical system which requires real-time processes with high accuracy. The mathematical model is based on the extended conventional search algorithm with certain interactions among the nearest neighborhood of sensors. It is argued that the model could realize a highly accurate decision support system with less number of parameters. A case of one dimensional interaction function is discussed, and a simple algorithm for the model is also given.Comment: 6 pages, Proceeding of the International Conference on Intelligent & Advanced Systems 2012 pp. 557-56

Hybrid CPU/GPU implementation for the FE2 multi-scale method for composite problems

    Get PDF
This thesis aims to develop a High-Performance Computing implementation to solve large composite materials problems through the use of the FE2 multi-scale method. Previous works have not been able to scale the FE2 strategy to real size problems with mesh resolutions of more than 10K elements at the macro-scale and 100^3 elements at the micro-scale. The latter is due to the computational requirements needed to carry out these calculations. This works identifies the most computationally intensive parts of the FE2 algorithm and ports several parts of the micro-scale computations to GPUs. The cases considered assume small deformations and steady-state equilibrium conditions. The work provides a feasible parallel strategy that can be used in real engineering cases to optimize the design of composite material structures. For this, it presents a coupling scheme between the MPI multi-physics code Alya (macro-scale) and the CPU/GPU-accelerated code Micropp (micro-scale). The coupled system is designed to work on multi-GPU architectures and to exploit the GPU overloading. Also, a Multi-Zone coupling methodology combined with weighted partitioning is proposed to reduce the computational cost and to solve the load balance problem. The thesis demonstrates that the method proposed scales notably well for the target problems, especially in hybrid architectures with distributed CPU nodes and communicated with multiple GPUs. Moreover, it clarifies the advantages achieved with the CPU/GPU accelerated version respect to the pure CPU approach.

    Reclaiming human machine nature

    Get PDF
Extending and modifying his domain of life by artifact production is one of the main characteristics of humankind. From the first hominid, who used a wood stick or a stone for extending his upper limbs and augmenting his gesture strength, to current systems engineers who used technologies for augmenting human cognition, perception and action, extending human body capabilities remains a big issue. From more than fifty years cybernetics, computer and cognitive sciences have imposed only one reductionist model of human machine systems: cognitive systems. Inspired by philosophy, behaviorist psychology and the information treatment metaphor, the cognitive system paradigm requires a function view and a functional analysis in human systems design process. According that design approach, human have been reduced to his metaphysical and functional properties in a new dualism. Human body requirements have been left to physical ergonomics or "physiology". With multidisciplinary convergence, the issues of "human-machine" systems and "human artifacts" evolve. The loss of biological and social boundaries between human organisms and interactive and informational physical artifact questions the current engineering methods and ergonomic design of cognitive systems. New developpment of human machine systems for intensive care, human space activities or bio-engineering sytems requires grounding human systems design on a renewed epistemological framework for future human systems model and evidence based "bio-engineering". In that context, reclaiming human factors, augmented human and human machine nature is a necessityComment: Published in HCI International 2014, Heraklion : Greece (2014

Using visual analytics to develop situation awareness in astrophysics

    Get PDF
We present a novel collaborative visual analytics application for cognitively overloaded users in the astrophysics domain. The system was developed for scientists who need to analyze heterogeneous, complex data under time pressure, and make predictions and time-critical decisions rapidly and correctly under a constant influx of changing data. The Sunfall Data Taking system utilizes several novel visualization and analysis techniques to enable a team of geographically distributed domain specialists to effectively and remotely maneuver a custom-built instrument under challenging operational conditions. Sunfall Data Taking has been in production use for 2 years by a major international astrophysics collaboration (the largest data volume supernova search currently in operation), and has substantially improved the operational efficiency of its users. We describe the system design process by an interdisciplinary team, the system architecture and the results of an informal usability evaluation of the production system by domain experts in the context of Endsley's three levels of situation awareness
