    Agent-based modeling and simulation of individual traffic as an environment for bus schedule simulation

    To re-establish the regular driving operations of a tram network, which was disturbed significantly by unforeseen external events, traffic schedulers apply rescheduling and rerouting strategies. These strategies are usually multi-modal; they consider the interaction of trams, buses, even taxis. Thus, to evaluate the applicability of a given rescheduling or rerouting strategy prior to its implementation in the real-world system, a multi-modal simulation software is needed. In this article we present an agent-based model of individual traffic which will be applied as background to a planned simulation of bus traffic. These combined models are to be integrated with an existing tram schedule simulation; the resulting multi-modal model will then be applied to evaluate the usefulness of given rescheduling or rerouting strategies. After a short introduction to agent-based modeling and simulation, as well as to existing models of individual traffic, this paper proposes to model the behavior of individual traffic as an environment for agent-based bus schedule simulation. Finally, some experiments are conducted by modeling and simulating individual traffic in Cologne's highly frequented Barbarossaplatz area

In this article we review some of the tra c simulation software applications, their features and characteristics as well as the issues these applications face. The Virtual City Testbed is a traffic simulation framework built to closely model human behavior by allowing direct user interaction in the simulation. Using the testbed, human subjects can remotely control vehicles in the virtual environment. A virtual positioning system (VPS) is displayed with the testbed client. It tracks and visualizes traffic, disruptions, and tolls local to the user's position. As traffic conditions shift, the VPS dynamically updates to reflect the changes.     Simulation of Road Traffic Applying Model-Driven Engineering

    Road traffic is an important phenomenon in modern societies. The study of its different aspects in the multiple scenarios where it happens is relevant for a huge number of problems. At the same time, its scale and complexity make it hard to study. Traffic simulations can alleviate these difficulties, simplifying the scenarios to consider and controlling their variables. However, their development also presents difficulties. The main ones come from the need to integrate the way of working of researchers and developers from multiple fields. Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) addresses these problems using Modelling Languages (MLs) and semi-automatic transformations to organise and describe the development, from requirements to code. This paper presents a domain-specific MDE framework for simulations of road traffic. It comprises an extensible ML, support tools, and development guidelines. The ML adopts an agent-based approach, which is focused on the roles of individuals in road traffic and their decision-making. A case study shows the process to model a traffic theory with the ML, and how to specialise that specification for an existing target platform and its simulations. The results are the basis for comparison with related work

    Simulation Based-MCDM Approach for Evaluating Traffic Solutions

    Traffic congestion problems have dramatically esca-lated with the increasing volume of vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists in the face of limited road capacity. This re-search aims to reduce the time road users spend in the system (school-zone area) and improve the efficiency of the process of dropping off and collecting children from a crowded school area. The study integrates discrete-event simulation (DES) and multi-criterion decision-mak-ing (MCDM) techniques to comprehensively evaluate the proposed alternatives to select an optimal solution based on many performance measures. A real-world case study of the traffic and congestion problems experienced by parents when they drop off and fetch their children from school during peak hours is presented. A heuristic algorithm was developed to simulate the random and un-predictable behaviour of road users. A cost-benefit anal-ysis considered the impact of waiting time, traffic den-sity, number of accidents, additional fuel expenses, and emission reduction. The technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and preference selection index (PSI) methods were utilised to select the most appropriate option for parents. The study found that the integration of simulation techniques with MCDM methods could efficiently solve traffic problems

    Simulate urban traffic realistically in a virtual environment is a complex task to implement, since many characteristics need to be developed. In this paper, we propose the use of different techniques to model and control the interaction of the elements of a simulation. In particular, we present a model physics-based for the vehicles to collisions avoid, an access control policy based on reserves and a model of synchronization of traffic signals using Petri net. The results show that the proposed model reproduces the behavior expected for the simulated contexts.Simular o trânsito de áreas urbanas de maneira realista em um ambiente virtual é uma tarefa complexa de ser implementada, pois muitas características precisam ser desenvolvidas. Neste trabalho, propomos a utilização de diversas técnicas para modelar e controlar a interação dos elementos constituintes de uma simulação. Em particular, apresentamos um modelo baseado em Física para que os veículos evitem colisões, uma política de controle de acesso a cruzamentos baseada em reservas e um modelo de sincronização de semáforos utilizando rede de Petri. Os resultados apresentados demonstram que os modelos propostos reproduzem os comportamentos esperados para os contextos simulados

    Simulation in Contexts Involving an Interactive Table and Tangible Objects

    International audienceBy using an interactive table, it is possible to interact with several people (decision-makers) in a simultaneous and collaborative way, around the table, during a simulation session. Thanks to the RFID technology with which the table is fitted, it is possible to give tangible objects a unique identity to include and to consider them in the simulation. The paper describes a context model, which takes into consideration the specificities related to interactive tables. The TangiSense interactive table is presented; it is connected to a multi-agent system making it possible to give the table a certain level of adaptation: each tangible object can be associated to an agent which can bring roles to the object (i.e., the roles are the equivalent of a set of behaviors). The multi-agent system proposed in this paper is modeled according to an architecture adapted to the exploitation of tangible and virtual objects during simulation on an interactive table. A case study is presented; it concerns a simulation of road traffic management. The illustrations give an outline of the potentialities of the simulation system as regards the context-awareness aspect, following both the actions of the decision-makers implied in simulation, and the agents composing the road traffic simulation

    Boids On Wheels A Proof of Concept Study of the Boid as a Vehicle

    The following project is a proof of concept study exploring the feasibility of simulating traffic as a multi-agent system, with the individual vehicle being implemented as a boid as defined by C. Reynolds in 1987. Furthermore, the simulator is to serve as a tool for urban planning. This thesis first explores the growth in using computers to simulate traffic since the 1940s, along with a brief review of the work done on Reynolds’ boids. This is followed by a discussion of tool selection and the reasons behind it. Secondly the thesis discusses the different steering behaviours developed for a boid vehicle,as well as their implementation. This is followed by a description of the preliminary evaluations carried out and the problems encountered. Finally the thesis concludes with some ideas for further research and the conclusion that within the scope of this project, implementing the boid as a vehicle was found to be feasible, and ripe for further wor
