During the seminar, several participants presented their current research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper.     Abstract 12 A compact visual representation, called the 3D layered, adaptive-resolution, and multi-13 perspective panorama (LAMP), is proposed for representing large-scale 3D scenes with large 14 variations of depths and obvious occlusions. Two kinds of 3D LAMP representations are 15 proposed: the relief-like LAMP and the image-based LAMP. Both types of LAMPs con-16 cisely represent almost all the information from a long image sequence. Methods to con-17 struct LAMP representations from video sequences with dominant translation are 18 provided. The relief-like LAMP is basically a single extended multi-perspective panoramic 19 view image. Each pixel has a pair of texture and depth values, but each pixel may also have 20 multiple pairs of texture-depth values to represent occlusion in layers, in addition to adap-21 tive resolution changing with depth. The image-based LAMP, on the other hand, consists of 22 a set of multi-perspective layers, each of which has a pair of 2D texture and depth maps, 23 but with adaptive time-sampling scales depending on depths of scene points. Several exam-24 ples of 3D LAMP construction for real image sequences are given. The 3D LAMP is a con-25 cise and powerful representation for image-based rendering. 2

    A virtual reality system using the concentric mosaic: Construction, rendering, and data compression

    This paper proposes a new image-based rendering (IBR) technique called "concentric mosaic" for virtual reality applications. IBR using the plenoptic function is an efficient technique for rendering new views of a scene from a collection of sample images previously captured. It provides much better image quality and lower computational requirement for rendering than conventional three-dimensional (3-D) model-building approaches. The concentric mosaic is a 3-D plenoptic function with viewpoints constrained on a plane. Compared with other more sophisticated four-dimensional plenoptic functions such as the light field and the lumigraph, the file size of a concentric mosaic is much smaller. In contrast to a panorama, the concentric mosaic allows users to move freely in a circular region and observe significant parallax and lighting changes without recovering the geometric and photometric scene models. The rendering of concentric mosaics is very efficient, and involves the reordering and interpolating of previously captured slit images in the concentric mosaic. It typically consists of hundreds of high-resolution images which consume a significant amount of storage and bandwidth for transmission. An MPEG-like compression algorithm is therefore proposed in this paper taking into account the access patterns and redundancy of the mosaic images. The compression algorithms of two equivalent representations of the concentric mosaic, namely the multiperspective panoramas and the normal setup sequence, are investigated.     State of the art machine learning methods need huge amounts of data with unambiguous annotations for their training. In the context of medical imaging this is, in general, a very difficult task due to limited access to clinical data, the time required for manual annotations and variability across experts. Simulated data could serve for data augmentation provided that its appearance was comparable to the actual appearance of intra-operative acquisitions. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are a powerful tool for artistic style transfer, but lack a criteria for selecting epochs ensuring also preservation of intra-operative content. We propose a multi-objective optimization strategy for a selection of cycleGAN epochs ensuring a mapping between virtual images and the intra-operative domain preserving anatomical content. Our approach has been applied to simulate intra-operative bronchoscopic videos and chest CT scans from virtual sketches generated using simple graphical primitives

    Radiology is evolving at a fast pace, and the specific field of cardiovascular and thoracic imaging is no stranger to that trend. While it could, at first, seem unusual to gather these two specialties in a common Issue, the very fact that many of us are trained and exercise in both is more than a hint to the common grounds these fields are sharing. From the ever-increasing role of artificial intelligence in the reconstruction, segmentation, and analysis of images to the quest of functionality derived from anatomy, their interplay is big, and one innovation developed with the former in mind could prove useful for the latter. If the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has shed light on the decisive diagnostic role of chest CT and, to a lesser extent, cardiac MR, one must not forget the major advances and extensive researches made possible in other areas by these techniques in the past years. With this Issue, we aim at encouraging and wish to bring to light state-of-the-art reviews, novel original researches, and ongoing discussions on the multiple aspects of cardiovascular and chest imaging

    The rapid growth in the popularity of Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR) experiences have resulted in an exponential surge of three-dimensional data. Point clouds have emerged as a commonly employed representation for capturing and visualizing three-dimensional data in these environments. Consequently, there has been a substantial research effort dedicated to developing efficient compression algorithms for point cloud data. This Master's thesis aims to investigate the current state-of-the-art lossless point cloud geometry compression techniques, explore some of these techniques in more detail and then propose improvements and/or extensions to enhance them and provide directions for future work on this topic
