The evolution of complex narratives, such as fictional books or films, is a fairly new area of cultural-evolutionary research. This chapter, first, discusses a theoretical question: in what sense do narratives evolve? Then, it proceeds to describing how content-based, or hedonic, selection influences the evolution of narrative forms – and briefly, the role of several other evolutionary mechanisms, such as drift and accumulation of innovations. Finally, the chapter presents the methods used for studying the evolution of literature and film at a large scale: from manual coding to various computational techniques.Introduction Narratives evolve Hedonic selection of stories Beyond Selection: Drift, Cumulation, Co-evolution Books and films as data Conclusio

Target Zones in History and Theory: Lessons from an Austro-Hungarian Experiment (1896-1914)

The first known experiment with an exchange rate band took place in Austria- Hungary between 1896 and 1914. The rationale for introducing this policy rested on precisely those intuitions that the modern literature has emphasized: the band was designed to secure both exchange rate stability and monetary policy autonomy. However, unlike more recent experiences, such as the ERM, this policy was not undermined by credibility problems. The episode provides an ideal testing ground for some important ideas in modern macroeconomics: specifically, can formal rules, when faithfully adhered to, provide policy makers with some advantages such as short term autonomy? First, we find that a credible band has a "microeconomic" influence on exchange rate stability. By reducing uncertainty, a credible fluctuation band improves the quality of expectations, a channel that has been neglected in the modern literature. Second, we show that the standard test of the basic target zone model is flawed and develop an alternative methodology. We believe that these findings shed a new light on the economics of exchange rate bands

Minor moments in modern literature and film

My dissertation, Minor Moments in Modern Literature and Film, follows a unique set of works in modern literature and cinema that moves beyond the grand events and dramatic scenes of traditional narratives. Throughout its chapters, I locate the beginning of this aesthetic development in the nineteenth-century novel, with the writings of Stendhal and Flaubert, but also in a line of twentieth and twenty-first-century works, including the stories and novels of Franz Kafka, Natalie Sarraute, Jorge Luis Borges, and Milan Kundera; along with the films of Michelangelo Antonioni, Lucrecia Martel, Pawel Pawlikowski, and Nuri Bilge Ceylan, among others. By examining a series of specific scenes in these literary and cinematic works, the main aim of my study is to rethink and to reframe our understanding of the “modern” as precisely that which resists great events and actions, as well as the dominant values that they represent, which I characterize as the “myth of great events.

Frankenstein: A Seminal Work of Modern Literature

    Get PDF
Although Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus, published in 1818, is assigned to the Romantic period of literature, it surpasses her contemporaries by its complexity of themes, philosophies, and social commentary embedded deep within. This paper contends that the novel should be considered one of the seminal works of modernity by closely examining the following elements of Modern literature as they apply to Frankenstein: the beginnings of speculative fiction found within the novel, science vs. religion, dark aspects of the psyche, disenchantment with the world, and the isolation/emptiness of the individual. Additionally, Mary Shelley’s own life and the influences of her parents, husband, and friends are examined to further prove how this budding author was of a more modern mindset than her contemporaries. By applying methods of literary analysis, it is determined that Mary Shelley’s waking dream undeniably breaks the bonds of traditional Romanticism and with bold pragmatism and universal symbolism, illuminates a changing literary landscape and journeys forth into the Modern. Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus transcends the literary period to which it is formally assigned

Malignant Glaucoma: A Review of the Modern Literature

    Get PDF
Malignant glaucoma is a rare form of glaucoma that typically follows surgery in patients with primary angle closure and primary angle-closure glaucoma. In this paper, the clinical features, classification, pathogenesis, and principles of management are discussed. Despite a high prevalence of primary angle closure glaucoma in South-East Asia, the vast majority of cases of malignant glaucoma are reported in White populations. This may reflect differing mechanisms of angle closure in White and Asian patients, which somehow reduces the likelihood of an aberrant relationship developing between the lens, ciliary body, anterior hyaloid, and vitreous structures within the eye. Although the exact underlying pathogenic mechanism remains unclear, the prognosis is good with modern medical, laser, and surgical treatment modalities
