    Numerical Analysis of Finite Source Markov Retrial System with Non-Reliable Server, Collision, and Impatient Customers

    A retrial queuing system with a single server is investigated in this paper. The server is subject to random breakdowns. The number of customers is finite and collision may take place. A collision occurs when a customer arrives to the busy server. In case of a collision both customers involved in the collision are sent back to the orbit. From the orbit the customers retry their requests after a random waiting time. The server can be down due to a failure. During the failed period the arriving customers are sent to the orbit, as well. The novelty of this analysis is the impatient behaviour of the customers. A customer waiting in the orbit may leave it after a random waiting time. The requests of these customers will not be served. All the random variables included in the model construction are assumed to be exponentially distributed and independent from each other. The impatient property makes the model more complex, so the derivation of a direct algorithmic solution (which was provided for the non-impatient case) is difficult. For numerical calculations the MOSEL-2 tool can be used. This tool solves the Kolmogorov system equations, and from the resulting steady-state probabilities various system characteristics and performance measures can be calculated, i.e. mean response time, mean waiting time in the orbit, utilization of the server, probability of the unserved impatient requests. Principally the effect of the impatient property is investigated in these results, which are presented graphically, as well

    Classification of the Existing Knowledge Base of OR/MS Research and Practice (1990-2019) using a Proposed Classification Scheme

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this recordOperations Research/Management Science (OR/MS) has traditionally been defined as the discipline that applies advanced analytical methods to help make better and more informed decisions. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the existing knowledge base of OR/MS research and practice using a proposed keywords-based approach. A conceptual structure is necessary in order to place in context the findings of our keyword analysis. Towards this we first present a classification scheme that relies on keywords that appeared in articles published in important OR/MS journals from 1990-2019 (over 82,000 articles). Our classification scheme applies a methodological approach towards keyword selection and its systematic classification, wherein approximately 1300 most frequently used keywords (in terms of cumulative percentage, these keywords and their derivations account for more than 45% of the approx. 290,000 keyword occurrences used by the authors to represent the content of their articles) were selected and organised in a classification scheme with seven top-level categories and multiple levels of sub-categories. The scheme identified the most commonly used keywords relating to OR/MS problems, modeling techniques and applications. Next, we use this proposed scheme to present an analysis of the last 30 years, in three distinct time periods, to show the changes in OR/MS literature. The contribution of the paper is thus twofold, (a) the development of a proposed discipline-based classification of keywords (like the ACM Computer Classification System and the AMS Mathematics Subject Classification), and (b) an analysis of OR/MS research and practice using the proposed classification

    In this paper we consider a particular class of stochastic Petri nets that admits a product-form stationary distribution under general conditions (independent exponentially distributed firing time). We show that the structure of the these stochastic Petri nets is appropriate for modelling systems in which several components compete for a resource and conflicts may arise during the contention that require to newly perform the operation after a recovery time. Examples of these systems are wireless stations competing for a channel or processes operating on the same database concurrently. We derive the performance indices as functions of the model parameters, i.e., firing rates, probabilities of conflicts, number of competing components

    Fuelling the zero-emissions road freight of the future: routing of mobile fuellers

    The future of zero-emissions road freight is closely tied to the sufficient availability of new and clean fuel options such as electricity and Hydrogen. In goods distribution using Electric Commercial Vehicles (ECVs) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles (HFCVs) a major challenge in the transition period would pertain to their limited autonomy and scarce and unevenly distributed refuelling stations. One viable solution to facilitate and speed up the adoption of ECVs/HFCVs by logistics, however, is to get the fuel to the point where it is needed (instead of diverting the route of delivery vehicles to refuelling stations) using "Mobile Fuellers (MFs)". These are mobile battery swapping/recharging vans or mobile Hydrogen fuellers that can travel to a running ECV/HFCV to provide the fuel they require to complete their delivery routes at a rendezvous time and space. In this presentation, new vehicle routing models will be presented for a third party company that provides MF services. In the proposed problem variant, the MF provider company receives routing plans of multiple customer companies and has to design routes for a fleet of capacitated MFs that have to synchronise their routes with the running vehicles to deliver the required amount of fuel on-the-fly. This presentation will discuss and compare several mathematical models based on different business models and collaborative logistics scenarios
