    Development of e-SIWES Portal: A Web based Platform for Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) Management

    We developed the e-SIWES portal in order to enhance the manual task of carrying out SIWES activities such as registration, dissemination of information, filling of log book for students’ day-to-day activities and supervision/assessment by lecturers and industry based supervisors. The portal is web-based and allows all tasks to be carried out using the personal computer and the Internet. We digitized the SIWES logbook and assessment forms for filling by students and grading by the supervisors electronically. This will allow supervisors to be assigned immediately the students commence their industrial training and facilitate their monitoring in real-time. With the e-SIWES portal, important messages can be broadcast to all students at once and on a prompt and regular basis

    Designing community care systems with AUML

    This paper describes an approach to developing an appropriate agent environment appropriate for use in community care applications. Key to its success is that software designers collaborate with environment builders to provide the levels of cooperation and support required within an integrated agent–oriented community system. Agent-oriented Unified Modeling Language (AUML) is a practical approach to the analysis, design, implementation and management of such an agent-based system, whilst providing the power and expressiveness necessary to support the specification, design and organization of a health care service. The background of an agent-based community care application to support the elderly is described. Our approach to building agent–oriented software development solutions emphasizes the importance of AUML as a fundamental initial step in producing more general agent–based architectures. This approach aims to present an effective methodology for an agent software development process using a service oriented approach, by addressing the agent decomposition, abstraction, and organization characteristics, whilst reducing its complexity by exploiting AUML’s productivity potential. </p

    The First International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC) was held in Trento, December 15-18, 2003. The focus of the conference ---Service Oriented Computing (SOC)--- is the new emerging paradigm for distributed computing and e-business processing that has evolved from object-oriented and component computing to enable building agile networks of collaborating business applications distributed within and across organizational boundaries. Of the 181 papers submitted to the ICSOC conference, 10 were selected for the forum session which took place on December the 16th, 2003. The papers were chosen based on their technical quality, originality, relevance to SOC and for their nature of being best suited for a poster presentation or a demonstration. This technical report contains the 10 papers presented during the forum session at the ICSOC conference. In particular, the last two papers in the report ere submitted as industrial papers

    Meta-model Pruning

    Large and complex meta-models such as those of Uml and its profiles are growing due to modelling and inter-operability needs of numerous\ud stakeholders. The complexity of such meta-models has led to coining\ud of the term meta-muddle. Individual users often exercise only a small\ud view of a meta-muddle for tasks ranging from model creation to construction\ud of model transformations. What is the effective meta-model that represents\ud this view? We present a flexible meta-model pruning algorithm and\ud tool to extract effective meta-models from a meta-muddle. We use\ud the notion of model typing for meta-models to verify that the algorithm\ud generates a super-type of the large meta-model representing the meta-muddle.\ud This implies that all programs written using the effective meta-model\ud will work for the meta-muddle hence preserving backward compatibility.\ud All instances of the effective meta-model are also instances of the\ud meta-muddle. We illustrate how pruning the original Uml metamodel\ud produces different effective meta-models

    Implementation and design of a service-based framework to integrate personal and institutional learning environments

    The landscape of teaching and learning has changed in recent years because of the application of Information and Communications technology. Among the most representative innovations in this regard are Learning Management Systems. Despite of their popularity in institutional contexts and the wide set of tools and services that they provide to learners and teachers, they present several issues. Learning Management Systems are linked to an institution and a period of time, and are not adapted to learners' needs. In order to address these problems Personal Learning Environments are defined, but it is clear that these will not replace Learning Management Systems and other institutional contexts. Both types of environment should therefore coexist and interact. This paper presents a service-based framework to facilitate such interoperability. It supports the export of functionalities from the institutional to the personal environment and also the integration within the institution of learning outcomes from personal activities. In order to achieve this in a flexible, extensible and open way, web services and interoperability specifications are used. In addition some interoperability scenarios are posed. The framework has been tested in real learning contexts and the results show that interoperability is possible, and that it benefits learners, teachers and institutions.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    This paper presents comparative study between Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) and Object Relational Database Management System(ORDBMS). The objective are to develop two systems with different models; Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) and Object-Relational Database Management System (ORDBMS) and also to choose which model is better from user and designer's point of view in terms of data modeling. Several problems are being identified in order to know which model is better; Relational Database Model or Object-Relational Database. Model approach. Similarities and differences between the two models based on criteria such as data modeling are compared. This is to provide guidelines on which model users or designers to choose from based on different type of data that they wish to accommodate. The scope of research is limited to be on the development of RDBMS and ORDBMS. This project involves project planning, requirements gathering, requirements analysis, logical database design, physical database design and finally testing phase. Thus, for the data collection, a research and a survey has been conducted through readings and interviews. By developing this comparative study, this project is expected to be implemented in Admission and Registration Unit in which it can serve the better performance of database

    E-PAYCHEQUE FRAMEWORK WITH CONTACT ELECTRONIC CARD AND FINGERPRINT BIOMETRIC FOR CASHLESS SMART CAMPUSES

    Identity theft in financial transactions is a very rampant problem among students in most institutions of learning. Currently, in order to minimize financial theft, most schools dole out paper based “paycheques” to students, which usually contain the name, personal identification number (PIN) and the value of money deposited by the students to the cashier. However, anybody bearing the PIN of another student can conveniently assume the identity and defraud the legitimate owner. This often generates a lot of rancor among students and it is a major concern for management especially in the high schools. In this work, we developed an e-Paycheque framework for secured cashless campuses. To be recognized on the web application within the framework, each student must possess a Smart ID card that is preconfigured with their unique fingerprint template and the value of deposited cash for transaction purposes. Since no two humans have the same fingerprint, financial transactions will only be possible for the legitimate owners of cards on the platform. This will in no small measure curb identity theft with respect to financial transactions on the campuses and also fast track the pace of achievement of the cashless policy in Nigeri
