    Modeling and simulation of wireless link quality (ETT) through principal component analysis of trace data

    Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is a powerful method in data analysis. In this paper, we employ the capabilities of PCA combined with statistical fits to trace data to develop tractable models that can be used to simulate the quality of links in wireless mesh networks using the expected transmission time (ETT) metric. We apply principal component analysis to ETT traces from a wireless mesh network to determine what features in the ETT traces are important and to extract any meaningful relationships therein. We demonstrate that PCA can be used to efficiently approximate large volumes of ETT values. In particular, the ETT trace for each link can be expressed as a combination of two basis vectors - one fairly stable and the other containing the variations in time. We also show how the extracted features can be employed to simulate ETT for a given network topology with and without known ETT trace data. Copyright 2011 ACM

    Improving Multicast Communications Over Wireless Mesh Networks

    In wireless mesh networks (WMNs) the traditional approach to shortest path tree based multicasting is to cater for the needs of the poorest performingnode i.e. the maximum permitted multicast line rate is limited to the lowest line rate used by the individual Child nodes on a branch. In general, this meansfixing the line rate to its minimum value and fixing the transmit power to its maximum permitted value. This simplistic approach of applying a single multicast rate for all nodes in the multicast group results in a sub-optimal trade-off between the mean network throughput and coverage area that does not allow for high bandwidth multimedia applications to be supported. By relaxing this constraint and allowing multiple line rates to be used, the mean network throughput can be improved. This thesis presents two methods that aim to increase the mean network throughput through the use of multiple line rates by the forwarding nodes. This is achieved by identifying the Child nodes responsible for reducing the multicast group rate. The first method identifies specific locations for the placement of relay nodes which allows for higher multicast branch line rates to be used. The second method uses a power control algorithm to tune the transmit power to allow for higher multicast branch line rates. The use of power control also helps to reduce the interference caused to neighbouring nodes.Through extensive computer simulation it can be shown that these two methods can lead to a four-fold gain in the mean network throughput undertypical WMN operating conditions compared with the single line rate case

    Network coding aware queue management in multi-rate wireless networks

    In this thesis we focus on network coding for unicast flows, in particular we take into consideration the COPE architecture. We study what happens when two nodes transmit with different rates and we propose a Markov chain to model this scenario. Furthermore, we propose a queue management algorithm to increase the coding opportunity and the throughput of the network. In COPE, a node codes two or more packets together when packets are headed to different nexthops. When there are just packets for the same nexthop, a node loses a coding opportunity. The queue management algorithm increases the coding opportunity prioritizing the channel access of sender nodes based on the queue information and on PER of the links. We simulate this algorithm on top of COPE in a multi rate scenario with NS 2 and we show that our algorithm yields throughput gains of up to 57\% compared to COP
