    Integration of e-business strategy for multi-lifecycle production systems

    Internet use has grown exponentially on the last few years becoming a global communication and business resource. Internet-based business, or e-Business will truly affect every sector of the economy in ways that today we can only imagine. The manufacturing sector will be at the forefront of this change. This doctoral dissertation provides a scientific framework and a set of novel decision support tools for evaluating, modeling, and optimizing the overall performance of e-Business integrated multi-lifecycle production systems. The characteristics of this framework include environmental lifecycle study, environmental performance metrics, hyper-network model of integrated e-supply chain networks, fuzzy multi-objective optimization method, discrete-event simulation approach, and scalable enterprise environmental management system design. The dissertation research reveals that integration of e-Business strategy into production systems can alter current industry practices along a pathway towards sustainability, enhancing resource productivity, improving cost efficiencies and reducing lifecycle environmental impacts. The following research challenges and scholarly accomplishments have been addressed in this dissertation: Identification and analysis of environmental impacts of e-Business. A pioneering environmental lifecycle study on the impact of e-Business is conducted, and fuzzy decision theory is further applied to evaluate e-Business scenarios in order to overcome data uncertainty and information gaps; Understanding, evaluation, and development of environmental performance metrics. Major environmental performance metrics are compared and evaluated. A universal target-based performance metric, developed jointly with a team of industry and university researchers, is evaluated, implemented, and utilized in the methodology framework; Generic framework of integrated e-supply chain network. The framework is based on the most recent research on large complex supply chain network model, but extended to integrate demanufacturers, recyclers, and resellers as supply chain partners. Moreover, The e-Business information network is modeled as a overlaid hypernetwork layer for the supply chain; Fuzzy multi-objective optimization theory and discrete-event simulation methods. The solution methods deal with overall system parameter trade-offs, partner selections, and sustainable decision-making; Architecture design for scalable enterprise environmental management system. This novel system is designed and deployed using knowledge-based ontology theory, and XML techniques within an agent-based structure. The implementation model and system prototype are also provided. The new methodology and framework have the potential of being widely used in system analysis, design and implementation of e-Business enabled engineering systems

    Control of thermoforming process parameters to manufacture surfaces with pin-based tooling

    Many manufacturing processes used to mass produce parts rely on expensive and time consuming tooling. These processes include sheet metal forming, injection molding, casting, and thermoforming. The time invested in design and development of tooling can be justified for high-production volumes. However, for low-volume production and customized products, the tooling investment cannot be amortized. Flexible tooling has been developed to address the needs of smaller production volumes. Reconfigurable pin tooling is an example of flexible tooling that relies on a matrix of adjustable-height pins to produce approximate surfaces. A key challenge in pin-based tooling is achieving accurate high quality surfaces due to the undulations caused by the pins in mimicking the desired shape. This research studies the effects of process parameters on surface quality. A testbed pin tool and thermoformer are fabricated to support this research. The pin tool comprises of a 10 by 10 matrix of square pins. Each pin measures 0.25 inch by 0.25 inch by 2.5 inches and is actuated manually using screws. Twenty-one exploratory and thirty-two shape specific experiments were conducted with 12 inch by 12 inch polystyrene sheets to check the feasibility of producing undulation-free surfaces. The parameters that influence the quality of the surfaces are heating time, sheet thickness, and sheet to fixture distance. Surface quality is measured by conformance with respect to the tool and the intensity of undulations. The surface-reproducibility and the measurement-repeatability errors were determined to be ±0.0045 mm and ±0.00027 mm respectively. The surface quality can be improved by reducing intensity of undulations by controlling the process parameters. The quality of thermoformed surfaces using the pin tool is a function of heating time and the intended shape

    El incremento en el uso de arquitecturas orientadas a servicios en los últimos 15 años ha propiciado la propuesta de numerosas técnicas para automatizar y dar soporte al uso de dichos servicios. Un elemento fundamental en la provisión de servicios es el Acuerdo de Nivel de Servicio (ANS), donde se formalizan los requisitos y garantías de consumidor y proveedor respecto del rendimiento del servicio. Las propuestas para servicios computacionales, además de proveer modelos formales para describirlos, proponen la automatización de las diferentes etapas del ciclo de vida del ANS, tales como la negociación de las garantías para crear un ANS, el despliegue de servicios basados en el ANS, o la gestión de los recursos para cumplir las garantías provistas en el mismo. Sin embargo, en los servicios tradicionales, no computacionales, es decir, los servicios que no son ejecutados por recursos computacionales, tales como los servicios de logística o de desarrollo de software, la gestión de sus ANSs todavía se realiza por medios ad-hoc. Así, las soluciones existentes no pueden ser reutilizadas por diferentes servicios. Y, en la mayoría de los casos, esta gestión se hace de manera manual (p.e. revisión de los objetivos acordados en los ANSs de servicios de transporte), por lo que la evaluación de estos ANSs es susceptible a errores y se suele retrasar respecto a la ejecución del servicio (p.e. cuando el ANS ha finalizado), por lo que no se pueden tomar acciones preventivas para evitar el incumplimiento del ANS o estas acciones no son rentables. En estos escenarios, aparecen, además, acuerdos marco para un periodo largo (p.e. 1 aõ), durante el cual pueden aparecen ANSs relacionados con éste para un periodo más específico y el análisis de la coherencia entre acuerdos marco y acuerdos específicos es complicada de hacer durante la ejecución del servicio. En esta tesis, nos proponemos automatizar parcialmente la gestión de los ANSs de servicios no computacionales. Así, por un lado, proponemos que los modelos para servicios computacionales se extiendan a servicios no computacionales, de manera que permitan describir la operativa del servicio y sus garantías. Y, por otro lado, basado en estos modelos, proporcionamos el diseño de operaciones para gestionar el ciclo de vida de los ANS. Concretamente, estas operaciones se basan en las fases de despligue y evaluación del ANS. De forma específica, esta tesis propone tres contribuciones principales. Primero, (A) extender iAgree para dar soporte al modelado de los ANS de servicios no computacionales. Segundo, (B) dar soporte al ciclo de vida de dichos ANS mediante la formalización de las operaciones citadas (configuración del servicio basada en el ANS y monitorización del mismo) y, a partir de estas operaciones, implementamos una arquitectura de referencia para estas operaciones. Y, por último, (C) proveemos el modelado de la relación entre acuerdos marco y específicos que relacione sus términos junto con la formalización de las operaciones para el análisis que aparecen entre ellos. Otros aspectos del ciclo de vida del servicio y del ANS, como la gestión de los recursos para mejorar el rendimiento del servicio o el uso de técnicas (como machine learning) para la predicción del cumplimiento de los ANSs están fuera del contexto de esta tesis, pero se plantean como futuras líneas de extensión. Este trabajo se ha basado en ANSs reales de diferentes dominios, tales como servicios de Transporte y Logística, proveedores de Cloud or outsourcing de desarrollo TIC, que se han utilizado para validar las propuestas. Además, las contribuciones presentadas se han aplicado en el contexto de proyectos reales de soporte de sistemas TIC.The rise of computational services in the last 15 years brought the proposal of a number of techniques to automate and support their enactment. One key element in services is the Service Level Agreement (SLA), where the requirements of service customer are matched with the performance levels from the service provider to define service level guarantees and related responsibilities. The proposals from computational domains are oriented to automate the different stages in the SLA Lifecycle, such as the negotiation of terms which will form the SLA, the deployment of services based on the SLA artifact or the management of computational resources to accomplish SLA goals on runtime. However, traditional non-computational services, that is, services which are not performed by computational resources, such as logistics or software development services, are still supported by ad-hoc mechanisms. Therefore, the existing solutions for the management of their SLAs cannot be reused for other services. This management is usually manually performed (e.g.: reviewing of the goals of an SLA in transport service), so their evaluation is error-prone and delayed regarding the service execution (e.g.: when the SLA is finished), so preemptive actions to avoid SLA violations cannot be taken or/and are expensive to perform. Furthermore, these SLAs are sometimes described on a long term basis (frame agreements), and related SLAs can appear for a shorter term (specific agreements) and the analysis of the validity among them is complex to perform on runtime. In this dissertation, we aim at partially automate the management of SLAs in noncomputational services. On the one hand, we suggest that existing models for computational services can be extended to non computational services and enable the description of the service operative and their guarantees. And, on the other hand, we provide a design for operations to partially support the SLA Lifecycle, based on the previous models. Specifically, these operations are mainly focused on the deployment and fulfillment stages of the SLA. Therefore, the contributions of this dissertation are three. First, (A) providing a model to describe Service Level Agreements of non computational services, as an extension of iAgree, an existing model for SLAs of computational services. Second side, (B) supporting the SLA Lifecycle with the design of the aforementioned operations (service configuration based on SLA and monitoring of SLA) and implementing a reference architecture for such operations. And, lastly, (C) providing a model for frame and specific agreements which relates their terms and formalises the analysis operations among them. Other related operations of the service lifecycle as the management of resources to improve service performance or the use of novel techniques (such as machine learning) to predict the SLA accomplishment are out of the scope of this thesis but planned as future line of extension. The current dissertation has been based on real SLAs from different domains, such as Transport & Logistics, public Cloud providers or IT Maintenance outsourcing, which have been used to validate the proposal. And, furthermore, the contributions have been applied in the context of real IT Maintenance outsourcing projects

    Supply chain orchestration and choreography: Programmable logistics using semantics

    Interoperability between enterprise systems in supply chains is increasingly essential for successful supply chain integration and key in the creation of innovative businesses / business models. In this paper we present a novel approach for supply chain choreography to support supply chain organizations in practice in creating seamless chain integration. The aim we set ourselves in this paper is to propose an architecture to enable and/or improve the exchange of information between supply chain organizations. To address this challenge we followed the design science methodology. First, we derived to a body of knowledge combining literature - on supply chain collaboration and challenges, but also corresponding areas such as web services - with empirical knowledge gained from applied research and industrial projects we were and are involved in. Secondly, we propose a semantic architecture that is able to support seamlessly integration and create an ecosystem where programmable logistics are the future. First implementations are promising, but also revealed a series of improvements to our architecture. Further research is required for more practical validation and improving the theory, and validation of the current research

    International audienceThe concept of simultaneous engineering has been used for several years in the industry. However, it rarely aims to think the design of the product and the design of its industrial system (the factory) together. In this paper, we address the need to have a global view of architectural design and manufacturing throughout the entire design process. More precisely, we define a model-based approach which makes it possible to evaluate the impact of a product design on its manufacturability. This approach constitutes a first step, in a long-term perspective, to consider several high-level industrial systems and product designs together and choose the one that gives the best performances.Le concept d'ingénierie simultanée est utilisé depuis plusieurs années dans l'industrie. Cependant, il vise rarement à penser ensemble la conception du produit et la conception de son système industriel (l'usine). Dans cet article, nous abordons la nécessité d'avoir une vision globale de la conception architecturale et de la fabrication tout au long du processus de conception. Plus précisément, nous définissons une approche basée sur un modèle qui permet d'évaluer l'impact de la conception d'un produit sur sa faisabilité. Cette approche constitue une première étape, dans une perspective à long terme, pour considérer ensemble plusieurs systèmes industriels de haut niveau et plusieurs conceptions de produits afin de choisir celui qui donne les meilleures performances

    Internet-based solutions to support distributed manufacturing

    With the globalisation and constant changes in the marketplace, enterprises are adapting themselves to face new challenges. Therefore, strategic corporate alliances to share knowledge, expertise and resources represent an advantage in an increasing competitive world. This has led the integration of companies, customers, suppliers and partners using networked environments. This thesis presents three novel solutions in the tooling area, developed for Seco tools Ltd, UK. These approaches implement a proposed distributed computing architecture using Internet technologies to assist geographically dispersed tooling engineers in process planning tasks. The systems are summarised as follows. TTS is a Web-based system to support engineers and technical staff in the task of providing technical advice to clients. Seco sales engineers access the system from remote machining sites and submit/retrieve/update the required tooling data located in databases at the company headquarters. The communication platform used for this system provides an effective mechanism to share information nationwide. This system implements efficient methods, such as data relaxation techniques, confidence score and importance levels of attributes, to help the user in finding the closest solutions when specific requirements are not fully matched In the database. Cluster-F has been developed to assist engineers and clients in the assessment of cutting parameters for the tooling process. In this approach the Internet acts as a vehicle to transport the data between users and the database. Cluster-F is a KD approach that makes use of clustering and fuzzy set techniques. The novel proposal In this system is the implementation of fuzzy set concepts to obtain the proximity matrix that will lead the classification of the data. Then hierarchical clustering methods are applied on these data to link the closest objects. A general KD methodology applying rough set concepts Is proposed In this research. This covers aspects of data redundancy, Identification of relevant attributes, detection of data inconsistency, and generation of knowledge rules. R-sets, the third proposed solution, has been developed using this KD methodology. This system evaluates the variables of the tooling database to analyse known and unknown relationships in the data generated after the execution of technical trials. The aim is to discover cause-effect patterns from selected attributes contained In the database. A fourth system was also developed. It is called DBManager and was conceived to administrate the systems users accounts, sales engineers’ accounts and tool trial monitoring process of the data. This supports the implementation of the proposed distributed architecture and the maintenance of the users' accounts for the access restrictions to the system running under this architecture
