Implementing imperfect information in fuzzy databases
Information in real-world applications is often
vague, imprecise and uncertain. Ignoring the inherent imperfect
nature of real-world will undoubtedly introduce some deformation of human perception of real-world and may eliminate several
substantial information, which may be very useful in several
data-intensive applications. In database context, several fuzzy
database models have been proposed. In these works, fuzziness
is introduced at different levels. Common to all these proposals is
the support of fuzziness at the attribute level. This paper proposes
first a rich set of data types devoted to model the different kinds
of imperfect information. The paper then proposes a formal
approach to implement these data types. The proposed approach
was implemented within a relational object database model but it
is generic enough to be incorporated into other database models.ou

Learning from AI : new trends in database technology
Recently some researchers in the areas of database data modelling and knowledge representations in artificial intelligence have recognized that they share many common goals. In this survey paper we show the relationship between database and artificial intelligence research. We show that there has been a tendency for data models to incorporate more modelling techniques developed for knowledge representations in artificial intelligence as the desire to incorporate more application oriented semantics, user friendliness, and flexibility has increased. Increasing the semantics of the representation is the key to capturing the "reality" of the database environment, increasing user friendliness, and facilitating the support of multiple, possibly conflicting, user views of the information contained in a database
About the nature of Kansei information, from abstract to concrete
Designer’s expertise refers to the scientific fields of emotional design and kansei information. This paper aims to answer to a scientific major issue which is, how to formalize designer’s knowledge, rules, skills into kansei information systems. Kansei can be considered as a psycho-physiologic, perceptive, cognitive and affective process through a particular experience. Kansei oriented methods include various approaches which deal with semantics and emotions, and show the correlation with some design properties. Kansei words may include semantic, sensory, emotional descriptors, and also objects names and product attributes. Kansei levels of information can be seen on an axis going from abstract to concrete dimensions. Sociological value is the most abstract information positioned on this axis. Previous studies demonstrate the values the people aspire to drive their emotional reactions in front of particular semantics. This means that the value dimension should be considered in kansei studies. Through a chain of value-function-product attributes it is possible to enrich design generation and design evaluation processes. This paper describes some knowledge structures and formalisms we established according to this chain, which can be further used for implementing computer aided design tools dedicated to early design. These structures open to new formalisms which enable to integrate design information in a non-hierarchical way. The foreseen algorithmic implementation may be based on the association of ontologies and bag-of-words.AN
Towards a semantic modeling of learners for social networks
The Friend of a Friend (FOAF) ontology is a vocabulary for mapping social networks. In this paper we propose an extension to FOAF in order to allow it to model learners and their social networks. We analyse FOAF alongside different learner modeling standards and specifications, and based on this analysis we introduce a taxonomy of the different features found in those models. We then compare the learner models and FOAF against the taxonomy to see how their characteristics have been shaped by their purpose. Based on this we propose extensions to FOAF in order to produce a learner model that is capable of forming the basis of a semantic social network.<br/

The problem is challenging due to the overwhelming complexity of social life and the extreme intra-class variability of social interactions captured under unconstrained conditions. We adopt the formalization proposed in Bugental’s social theory, that groups human relations into five social domains with related categories. Our method is a new deep learning architecture that exploits the hierarchical structure of the label space and relies on a set of social attributes estimated at frame level to provide a semantic representation of social interactions. Social Relation Recognition in Egocentric Photostreams
This paper proposes an approach to automatically categorize the social
interactions of a user wearing a photo-camera 2fpm, by relying solely on what
the camera is seeing. The problem is challenging due to the overwhelming
complexity of social life and the extreme intra-class variability of social
interactions captured under unconstrained conditions. We adopt the
formalization proposed in Bugental's social theory, that groups human relations
into five social domains with related categories. Our method is a new deep
learning architecture that exploits the hierarchical structure of the label
space and relies on a set of social attributes estimated at frame level to
provide a semantic representation of social interactions. Experimental results
on the new EgoSocialRelation dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our
proposal.Comment: Accepted at ICIP 201
On the similarity relation within fuzzy ontology components
Ontology reuse is an important research issue. Ontology
merging, integration, mapping, alignment and versioning
are some of its subprocesses. A considerable research work has
been conducted on them. One common issue to these subprocesses
is the problem of defining similarity relations among ontologies
components. Crisp ontologies become less suitable in all domains
in which the concepts to be represented have vague, uncertain
and imprecise definitions. Fuzzy ontologies are developed to
cope with these aspects. They are equally concerned with the
problem of ontology reuse. Defining similarity relations within
fuzzy context may be realized basing on the linguistic similarity
among ontologies components or may be deduced from their
intentional definitions. The latter approach needs to be dealt
with differently in crisp and fuzzy ontologies. This is the scope
of this paper.ou
Conceptual design and implementation of the fuzzy semantic model
FSM is one of few database models that support
fuzziness, uncertainty and impreciseness of real-world at the class
definition level. FSM authorizes an entity to be partially member
of its class according to a given degree of membership that reflects
the level to which the entity verifies the extent properties of this
class. This paper deals with the conceptual design of FSM and
adresses some implementation issues.ou
