    WiBACK: A back-haul network architecture for 5G networks

    Recently both academic and industry worlds has started to define the successor of Long Term Evolution (LTE), so-called 5G networks, which will most likely appear by the end of the decade. It is widely accepted that those 5G networks will have to deal with significantly more challenging requirements in terms of provided bandwidth, latency and supported services. This will lead to not only modifications in access and parts of core networks, but will trigger changes throughout the whole network, including the Back-haul segment. In this work we present our vision of a 5G Back-haul network and identify the associated challenges. We then describe our Wireless Backhaul (WiBACK) architecture, which implements Software Defined Network (SDN) concepts and further extends them into the wireless domain.     Involuntary Signal-Based Grounding of Civilian Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) in Civilian Airspace

    This thesis investigates the involuntary signal-based grounding of civilian unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in unauthorized air spaces. The technique proposed here will forcibly land unauthorized UAS in a given area in such a way that the UAS will not be harmed, and the pilot cannot stop the landing. The technique will not involuntarily ground authorized drones which will be determined prior to the landing. Unauthorized airspaces include military bases, university campuses, areas affected by a natural disaster, and stadiums for public events. This thesis proposes an early prototype of a hardware-based signal based involuntary grounding technique to handle the problem by immediately grounding unauthorized drones. Research in the development of UAS is in the direction of airspace integration. For the potential of airspace integration three communication protocols were evaluated: LoRa WAN, Bluetooth 5, and Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) for their long range capabilities. Of the three technologies, LoRa WAN transmitted the farthest, however the FSK module transmitted a comparable distance at a lower power. The power measurements were taken using existing modules, however, due to LoRa using a higher frequency than the FSK module this outcome was expected

    A Framework for Enhancing the Energy Efficiency of IoT Devices in 5G Network

    A wide range of services, such as improved mobile broadband, extensive machine-type communication, ultra-reliability, and low latency, are anticipated to be delivered via the 5G network. The 5G network has developed as a multi-layer network that uses numerous technological advancements to provide a wide array of wireless services to fulfil such a diversified set of requirements. Several technologies, including software-defined networking, network function virtualization, edge computing, cloud computing, and tiny cells, are being integrated into the 5G networks to meet the needs of various requirements. Due to the higher power consumption that will arise from such a complicated network design, energy efficiency becomes crucial. The network machine learning technique has attracted a lot of interest from the scientific community because it has the potential to play a crucial role in helping to achieve energy efficiency. Utilization factor, access latency, arrival rate, and other metrics are used to study the proposed scheme. It is determined that our system outperforms the present scheme after comparing the suggested scheme to these parameters

This is all because of the fast growth in technology with generations like 5G coming in full swing along with other Gs which are already there. 5G has aspiring targets, which includes excessive channel bandwidth, very high data rates, mobility is high, ultra-low latency, energy efficiency is high, large cell ranges and seamless connection density to name a few. This is where the thesis comes in the picture, which is to design a fool proof 5G network and its optimization with the help of the tool called Asset. Network planning is an iterative process. This tool is used to plot various coverage simulations, traffic, and capacity predictions. The focus is studying the working of the Massive MIMO antenna techniques so that we can understand the impact of MIMO antenna in a particular area, also regarding the capacity and traffic.     A Comprehensive Survey on Moving Networks

    The unprecedented increase in the demand for mobile data, fuelled by new emerging applications such as HD video streaming and heightened online activities has caused massive strain on the existing cellular networks. As a solution, the 5G technology has been introduced to improve network performance through various innovative features such as mmWave spectrum and HetNets. In essence, HetNets include several small cells underlaid within macro-cell to serve densely populated regions. Recently, a mobile layer of HetNet has been under consideration by the researchers and is often referred to as moving networks. Moving networks comprise of mobile cells that are primarily introduced to improve QoS for commuting users inside public transport because the QoS is deteriorated due to vehicular penetration losses. Furthermore, the users inside fast moving public transport also exert excessive load on the core network due to large group handovers. To this end, mobile cells will play a crucial role in reducing overall handover count and will help in alleviating these problems by decoupling in-vehicle users from the core network. To date, remarkable research results have been achieved by the research community in addressing challenges linked to moving networks. However, to the best of our knowledge, a discussion on moving networks in a holistic way is missing in the current literature. To fill the gap, in this paper, we comprehensively survey moving networks. We cover the technological aspects and their applications in the futuristic applications. We also discuss the use-cases and value additions that moving networks may bring to future cellular architecture and identify the challenges associated with them.     Separation Framework: An Enabler for Cooperative and D2D Communication for Future 5G Networks

    Soaring capacity and coverage demands dictate that future cellular networks need to soon migrate towards ultra-dense networks. However, network densification comes with a host of challenges that include compromised energy efficiency, complex interference management, cumbersome mobility management, burdensome signaling overheads and higher backhaul costs. Interestingly, most of the problems, that beleaguer network densification, stem from legacy networks' one common feature i.e., tight coupling between the control and data planes regardless of their degree of heterogeneity and cell density. Consequently, in wake of 5G, control and data planes separation architecture (SARC) has recently been conceived as a promising paradigm that has potential to address most of aforementioned challenges. In this article, we review various proposals that have been presented in literature so far to enable SARC. More specifically, we analyze how and to what degree various SARC proposals address the four main challenges in network densification namely: energy efficiency, system level capacity maximization, interference management and mobility management. We then focus on two salient features of future cellular networks that have not yet been adapted in legacy networks at wide scale and thus remain a hallmark of 5G, i.e., coordinated multipoint (CoMP), and device-to-device (D2D) communications. After providing necessary background on CoMP and D2D, we analyze how SARC can particularly act as a major enabler for CoMP and D2D in context of 5G. This article thus serves as both a tutorial as well as an up to date survey on SARC, CoMP and D2D.     A brief review of massive MIMO technology for the next generation

    Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) is an evolving technology based on the principle of spatial multiplexing which consists in using at the same time the same radio frequencies to send different signals. The several transmitting antennas from a base station can transmit different signals and several receiving antennas from a device can receive and divide them simultaneously. Due to the physically difficult of installing antennas close to each other, standard MIMO networks generally limit four antenna-side transmitters and receivers for data transmission while it could be more. The study aims to review the traditional MIMO different types as well as investigates the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) between Single Input Single Output (SISO) and MIMO to ensure the best wireless connection functionality. In addition to that, a simple comparison to distinguish between SISO, SIMO, MISO, and MIMO in term of capacity and data rate to provide an indication for the quality of the wireless connection. The work's contribution is to illustrate technological benefits like MIMO, which boosts data speeds and increases the reliability of wireless networks. The outcome shows a SISO system would have a lower data rate than other systems because it only has one antenna at the transmitter and receiver, whereas a MISO system would typically have a greater SNR than a SISO or SIMO system because it uses several transmit antennas. MIMO, however, took advantage of all the positive characteristics and emerged as the best solution overall

    Multi-user MIMO beamforming:implementation, verification in L1 capacity, and performance testing

    Abstract. A certain piece of technology takes a lot of effort, research, and testing to reach the productisation phase. Radio features are implemented in layer 1 (L1) before moving to the hardware implementation phase, where their functioning is tested and verified. The target of the thesis is to implement and verify beamforming based multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) in L1 capacity and performance testing (PET) environment. The L1 testing environment mainly focuses on 4G and 5G stand-alone (SA) cases, while the focus of this thesis work is only on 5G SA technology, which features beamforming and MU-MIMO. Beamforming and MU-MIMO have been tested in an end-to-end system but not specifically in L1. The L1 testing provides a deeper analysis of beamforming and MU-MIMO in L1 and aids in problem identification at an early productisation phase, saving both time and money. L1 PET has multiple components that work together for L1 data transmission in both uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) directions and handle the verification of the transmitted data. The main components that play a key role in the implementation of multi-user MIMO beamforming concern frame design setup, message setup for UL and DL using correct channels and interfaces, transmission of the generated data in UL and DL, and message capturing at L1 end (whether correct messages are transmitted or not). For verification purposes, methods such as analysing plots from L1 log results based on comparison with radio specifications are used to determine whether the generated test output is correct or not. Finally, performance metrics, such as error vector magnitude (EVM), UE per transmission time interval (TTI), number of layers per UE, channel quality indicator (CQI), physical resource block (PRB) count, and throughput, are evaluated to assess the capacity and performance correctness of the implemented test setup
