Digital twins: Understanding the added value of integrated models for through-life engineering services
Digital twins are digital representations of physical products or systems that consist of multiple models from various domains describing them on multiple scales. By means of communication, digital twins change and evolve together with their physical counterparts throughout their lifecycle. Domain-specific partial models that make up the digital twin, such as the CAD model or the degradation model, are usually well known and provide accurate descriptions of certain parts of the physical asset. However, in complex systems, the value of integrating the partial models increases because it facilitates the study of their complex behaviours which only emerge from the interactions between various parts of the system. The paper proposes that the partial models of the digital twin share a common model space that integrates them through a definition of their interrelations and acts as a bridge between the digital twin and the physical asset. The approach is illustrated in a case of a mechatronic product - a differential drive mobile robot developed as a testbed for digital twin research. It is demonstrated how the integrated models add value to different stages of the lifecycle, allowing for evaluation of performance in the design stage and real-time reflection with the physical asset during its operation
An Energy Aware and Secure MAC Protocol for Tackling Denial of Sleep Attacks in Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless sensor networks which form part of the core for the Internet of Things consist of resource constrained sensors that are usually powered by batteries. Therefore, careful
energy awareness is essential when working with these devices.
Indeed,the introduction of security techniques such as authentication and encryption, to ensure confidentiality and integrity of data, can place higher energy load on the sensors. However, the absence of security protection c ould give room for energy drain attacks such as denial of sleep attacks which have a higher negative impact on the life span ( of the sensors than the presence of security features.
This thesis, therefore, focuses on tackling denial of sleep attacks from two perspectives A security perspective and an energy efficiency perspective. The security perspective involves evaluating and ranking a number of security based techniques to curbing denial of sleep attacks. The energy efficiency perspective, on the other hand, involves exploring duty cycling and simulating three Media Access Control ( protocols Sensor MAC, Timeout MAC andTunableMAC under different network sizes and measuring different parameters such as the Received Signal Strength RSSI) and Link Quality Indicator ( Transmit power, throughput and energy efficiency Duty cycling happens to be one of the major techniques for conserving energy in wireless sensor networks and this research aims to answer questions with regards to the effect of duty cycles on the energy efficiency as well as the throughput of three duty cycle protocols Sensor MAC ( Timeout MAC ( and TunableMAC in addition to creating a novel MAC protocol that is also more resilient to denial of sleep a ttacks than existing protocols.
The main contributions to knowledge from this thesis are the developed framework used for evaluation of existing denial of sleep attack solutions and the algorithms which fuel the other contribution to knowledge a newly developed protocol tested on the Castalia Simulator on the OMNET++ platform. The new protocol has been compared with existing protocols and
has been found to have significant improvement in energy efficiency and also better resilience to denial of sleep at tacks Part of this research has been published Two conference

I know what leaked in your pocket: uncovering privacy leaks on Android Apps with Static Taint Analysis
Android applications may leak privacy data carelessly or maliciously. In this
work we perform inter-component data-flow analysis to detect privacy leaks
between components of Android applications. Unlike all current approaches, our
tool, called IccTA, propagates the context between the components, which
improves the precision of the analysis. IccTA outperforms all other available
tools by reaching a precision of 95.0% and a recall of 82.6% on DroidBench. Our
approach detects 147 inter-component based privacy leaks in 14 applications in
a set of 3000 real-world applications with a precision of 88.4%. With the help
of ApkCombiner, our approach is able to detect inter-app based privacy leaks
Towards the Model-Driven Engineering of Secure yet Safe Embedded Systems
We introduce SysML-Sec, a SysML-based Model-Driven Engineering environment
aimed at fostering the collaboration between system designers and security
experts at all methodological stages of the development of an embedded system.
A central issue in the design of an embedded system is the definition of the
hardware/software partitioning of the architecture of the system, which should
take place as early as possible. SysML-Sec aims to extend the relevance of this
analysis through the integration of security requirements and threats. In
particular, we propose an agile methodology whose aim is to assess early on the
impact of the security requirements and of the security mechanisms designed to
satisfy them over the safety of the system. Security concerns are captured in a
component-centric manner through existing SysML diagrams with only minimal
extensions. After the requirements captured are derived into security and
cryptographic mechanisms, security properties can be formally verified over
this design. To perform the latter, model transformation techniques are
implemented in the SysML-Sec toolchain in order to derive a ProVerif
specification from the SysML models. An automotive firmware flashing procedure

Modeling IoT-aware Business Processes - A State of the Art Report
This research report presents an analysis of the state of the art of modeling
Internet of Things (IoT)-aware business processes. IOT links the physical world
to the digital world. Traditionally, we would find information about events and
processes in the physical world in the digital world entered by humans and
humans using this information to control the physical world. In the IoT
paradigm, the physical world is equipped with sensors and actuators to create a
direct link with the digital world. Business processes are used to coordinate a
complex environment including multiple actors for a common goal, typically in
the context of administrative work. In the past few years, we have seen
research efforts on the possibilities to model IoT- aware business processes,
extending process coordination to real world entities directly. This set of
research efforts is relatively small when compared to the overall research
effort into the IoT and much of the work is still in the early research stage.
To create a basis for a bridge between IoT and BPM, the goal of this report is
to collect and analyze the state of the art of existing frameworks for modeling

A Layered Software Architecture for the Management of a Manufacturing Company
In this paper we describe a layered software architecture in the management of a manufactur-ing company that intensively uses computer technology. Application tools, new and legacy, after the updating, operate in a context of an open web oriented architecture. The software architecture enables the integration and interoperability among all tools that support business processes. Manufacturing Executive System and Text Mining tools are excellent interfaces, the former both for internal production and management processes and the latter for external processes coming from the market.
