Statistical Mechanics of maximal independent sets
The graph theoretic concept of maximal independent set arises in several
practical problems in computer science as well as in game theory. A maximal
independent set is defined by the set of occupied nodes that satisfy some
packing and covering constraints. It is known that finding minimum and
maximum-density maximal independent sets are hard optimization problems. In
this paper, we use cavity method of statistical physics and Monte Carlo
simulations to study the corresponding constraint satisfaction problem on
random graphs. We obtain the entropy of maximal independent sets within the
replica symmetric and one-step replica symmetry breaking frameworks, shedding
light on the metric structure of the landscape of solutions and suggesting a
class of possible algorithms. This is of particular relevance for the
application to the study of strategic interactions in social and economic
networks, where maximal independent sets correspond to pure Nash equilibria of
a graphical game of public goods allocation
A Framework for Algorithm Stability
We say that an algorithm is stable if small changes in the input result in
small changes in the output. This kind of algorithm stability is particularly
relevant when analyzing and visualizing time-varying data. Stability in general
plays an important role in a wide variety of areas, such as numerical analysis,
machine learning, and topology, but is poorly understood in the context of
(combinatorial) algorithms. In this paper we present a framework for analyzing
the stability of algorithms. We focus in particular on the tradeoff between the
stability of an algorithm and the quality of the solution it computes. Our
framework allows for three types of stability analysis with increasing degrees
of complexity: event stability, topological stability, and Lipschitz stability.
We demonstrate the use of our stability framework by applying it to kinetic

Structural Rounding: Approximation Algorithms for Graphs Near an Algorithmically Tractable Class
We develop a framework for generalizing approximation algorithms from the structural graph algorithm literature so that they apply to graphs somewhat close to that class (a scenario we expect is common when working with real-world networks) while still guaranteeing approximation ratios. The idea is to edit a given graph via vertex- or edge-deletions to put the graph into an algorithmically tractable class, apply known approximation algorithms for that class, and then lift the solution to apply to the original graph. We give a general characterization of when an optimization problem is amenable to this approach, and show that it includes many well-studied graph problems, such as Independent Set, Vertex Cover, Feedback Vertex Set, Minimum Maximal Matching, Chromatic Number, (l-)Dominating Set, Edge (l-)Dominating Set, and Connected Dominating Set.
To enable this framework, we develop new editing algorithms that find the approximately-fewest edits required to bring a given graph into one of a few important graph classes (in some cases these are bicriteria algorithms which simultaneously approximate both the number of editing operations and the target parameter of the family). For bounded degeneracy, we obtain an O(r log{n})-approximation and a bicriteria (4,4)-approximation which also extends to a smoother bicriteria trade-off. For bounded treewidth, we obtain a bicriteria (O(log^{1.5} n), O(sqrt{log w}))-approximation, and for bounded pathwidth, we obtain a bicriteria (O(log^{1.5} n), O(sqrt{log w} * log n))-approximation. For treedepth 2 (related to bounded expansion), we obtain a 4-approximation. We also prove complementary hardness-of-approximation results assuming P != NP: in particular, these problems are all log-factor inapproximable, except the last which is not approximable below some constant factor 2 (assuming UGC)
Approximability results for stable marriage problems with ties
We consider instances of the classical stable marriage problem in which persons may include ties in their preference lists. We show that, in such a setting, strong lower bounds hold for the approximability of each of the problems of finding an egalitarian, minimum regret and sex-equal stable matching. We also consider stable marriage instances in which persons may express unacceptable partners in addition to ties. In this setting, we prove that there are constants delta, delta' such that each of the problems of approximating a maximum and minimum cardinality stable matching within factors of delta, delta' (respectively) is NP-hard, under strong restrictions. We also give an approximation algorithm for both problems that has a performance guarantee expressible in terms of the number of lists with ties. This significantly improves on the best-known previous performance guarantee, for the case that the ties are sparse. Our results have applications to large-scale centralized matching schemes
Message passing for vertex covers
Constructing a minimal vertex cover of a graph can be seen as a prototype for
a combinatorial optimization problem under hard constraints. In this paper, we
develop and analyze message passing techniques, namely warning and survey
propagation, which serve as efficient heuristic algorithms for solving these
computational hard problems. We show also, how previously obtained results on
the typical-case behavior of vertex covers of random graphs can be recovered

Analysis of Performance of Dynamic Multicast Routing Algorithms
In this paper, three new dynamic multicast routing algorithms based on the
greedy tree technique are proposed; Source Optimised Tree, Topology Based Tree
and Minimum Diameter Tree. A simulation analysis is presented showing various
performance aspects of the algorithms, in which a comparison is made with the
greedy and core based tree techniques. The effects of the tree source location
on dynamic membership change are also examined. The simulations demonstrate
that the Source Optimised Tree algorithm achieves a significant improvement in
terms of delay and link usage when compared to the Core Based Tree, and greedy
algorithm
