Genetic Improvement of Software for Energy E ciency in Noisy and Fragmented Eco-Systems
Software has made its way to every aspect of our daily life. Users of smart devices expect
almost continuous availability and uninterrupted service. However, such devices operate on
restricted energy resources. As energy eficiency of software is relatively a new concern for
software practitioners, there is a lack of knowledge and tools to support the development
of energy eficient software. Optimising the energy consumption of software requires measuring
or estimating its energy use and then optimising it. Generalised models of energy
behaviour suffer from heterogeneous and fragmented eco-systems (i.e. diverse hardware
and operating systems). The nature of such optimisation environments favours in-vivo
optimisation which provides the ground-truth for energy behaviour of an application on
a given platform. One key challenge in in-vivo energy optimisation is noisy energy readings.
This is because complete isolation of the effects of software optimisation is simply
infeasible, owing to random and systematic noise from the platform.
In this dissertation we explore in-vivo optimisation using Genetic Improvement of Software
(GI) for energy eficiency in noisy and fragmented eco-systems.
First, we document expected and unexpected technical challenges and their solutions
when conducting energy optimisation experiments. This can be used as guidelines for
software practitioners when conducting energy related experiments.
Second, we demonstrate the technical feasibility of in-vivo energy optimisation using
GI on smart devices. We implement a new approach for mitigating noisy readings based
on simple code rewrite.
Third, we propose a new conceptual framework to determine the minimum number of
samples required to show significant differences between software variants competing in
tournaments. We demonstrate that the number of samples can vary drastically between
different platforms as well as from one point of time to another within a single platform.
It is crucial to take into consideration these observations when optimising in the wild or
across several devices in a control environment.
Finally, we implement a new validation approach for energy optimisation experiments.
Through experiments, we demonstrate that the current validation approaches can mislead
software practitioners to draw wrong conclusions. Our approach outperforms the current
validation techniques in terms of specificity and sensitivity in distinguishing differences
between validation solutions.Thesis (Ph.D.) -- University of Adelaide, School of Computer Science, 202

Distributed Robotic Vision for Calibration, Localisation, and Mapping
This dissertation explores distributed algorithms for calibration, localisation, and mapping in the context of a multi-robot network equipped with cameras and onboard processing, comparing against centralised alternatives where all data is transmitted to a singular external node on which processing occurs. With the rise of large-scale camera networks, and as low-cost on-board processing becomes increasingly feasible in robotics networks, distributed algorithms are becoming important for robustness and scalability. Standard solutions to multi-camera computer vision require the data from all nodes to be processed at a central node which represents a significant single point of failure and incurs infeasible communication costs. Distributed solutions solve these issues by spreading the work over the entire network, operating only on local calculations and direct communication with nearby neighbours.
This research considers a framework for a distributed robotic vision platform for calibration, localisation, mapping tasks where three main stages are identified: an initialisation stage where calibration and localisation are performed in a distributed manner, a local tracking stage where visual odometry is performed without inter-robot communication, and a global mapping stage where global alignment and optimisation strategies are applied. In consideration of this framework, this research investigates how algorithms can be developed to produce fundamentally distributed solutions, designed to minimise computational complexity whilst maintaining excellent performance, and designed to operate effectively in the long term. Therefore, three primary objectives are sought aligning with these three stages

Unmet goals of tracking: within-track heterogeneity of students' expectations for
Educational systems are often characterized by some form(s) of ability grouping, like tracking. Although substantial variation in the implementation of these practices exists, it is always the aim to improve teaching efficiency by creating homogeneous groups of students in terms of capabilities and performances as well as expected pathways. If studentsâ expected pathways (university, graduate school, or working) are in line with the goals of tracking, one might presume that these expectations are rather homogeneous within tracks and heterogeneous between tracks. In Flanders (the northern region of Belgium), the educational system consists of four tracks. Many students start out in the most prestigious, academic track. If they fail to gain the necessary credentials, they move to the less esteemed technical and vocational tracks. Therefore, the educational system has been called a 'cascade system'. We presume that this cascade system creates homogeneous expectations in the academic track, though heterogeneous expectations in the technical and vocational tracks. We use data from the International Study of City Youth (ISCY), gathered during the 2013-2014 school year from 2354 pupils of the tenth grade across 30 secondary schools in the city of Ghent, Flanders. Preliminary results suggest that the technical and vocational tracks show more heterogeneity in studentâs expectations than the academic track. If tracking does not fulfill the desired goals in some tracks, tracking practices should be questioned as tracking occurs along social and ethnic lines, causing social inequality

Pages 529-542We provide a model for systematic implementation of telemedicine within a large evaluation center for COVID-19 in the area of Baja California, Mexico. Our model is based on human-centric design factors and cross disciplinary collaborations for scalable data-driven enablement of smartphone, cellular, and video Teleconsul-tation technologies to link hospitals, clinics, and emergency medical services for point-of-care assessments of COVID testing, and for subsequent treatment and quar-antine decisions. A multidisciplinary team was rapidly created, in cooperation with different institutions, including: the Autonomous University of Baja California, the Ministry of Health, the Command, Communication and Computer Control Center
of the Ministry of the State of Baja California (C4), Colleges of Medicine, and the College of Psychologists. Our objective is to provide information to the public and to evaluate COVID-19 in real time and to track, regional, municipal, and state-wide data in real time that informs supply chains and resource allocation with the anticipation of a surge in COVID-19 cases.

Sustainable Business Models
The dynamically changing world economy, in an era of intensive development and globalization, creates new needs in both the theoretical models of management and in the practical discussion related to the perception of business. Because of new economic phenomena related to the crisis, there is a need for the design and operationalization of innovative business models for companies. Due to the fact that in times of crisis, the principles of strategic balance are particularly important; these business models can be sustainable business models. Moreover, it is essential to skillfully use different methods and concepts of management to ensure the continuity of business. It seems that sustainable business models, in their essence, can support companies' effectiveness and contribute to their stable, sustainable functioning in the difficult, ever-changing market. This Special Issue aims to discuss the key mechanisms concerning the design and operationalization of sustainable business models, from a strategic perspective. We invite you to contribute to this Issue by submitting comprehensive reviews, case studies, or research articles. Papers selected for this Special Issue are subject to a rigorous peer review procedure, with the aim of rapid and wide dissemination of research results, developments, and applications
