    KIIT Digital Library: An open hypermedia Application

    The massive use of Web technologies has spurred a new revolution in information storing and retrieving. It has always been an issue whether to incorporate hyperlinks embedded in a document or to store them separately in a link base. Research effort has been concentrated on the development of link services that enable hypermedia functionality to be integrate into the general computing environment and allow linking from all tools on the browser or desktop. KIIT digital library is such an application that focuses mainly on architecture and protocols of Open Hypermedia Systems (OHS), providing on-line document authoring, browsing, cataloguing, searching and updating features. The WWW needs fundamentally new frameworks and concepts to support new search and indexing functionality. This is because of the frequent use of digital archives and to maintain huge amount of database and documents. These digital materials range from electronic versions of books and journals offered by traditional publishers to manuscripts, photographs, maps, sound recordings and similar materials digitized from libraries' own special collections to new electronic scholarly and scientific databases developed through the collaboration of researchers, computer and information scientists, and librarians. Metadata in catalogue systems are an indispensable tool to find information and services in networks. Technological advances provide new opportunities to facilitate the process of collecting and maintaining metadata and to facilitate using catalogue systems. The overall objective is how to make best use of catalogue systems. Information systems such as the World Wide Web, Digital Libraries, inventories of satellite images and other repositories contain more data than ever before, are globally distributed, easy to use and, therefore, become accessible to huge, heterogeneous user groups. For KIIT Digital Library, we have used Resource Development Framework (RDF) and Dublin Core (DC) standards to incorporate metadata. Overall KIIT digital library provides electronic access to information in many different forms. Recent technological advances make the storage and transmission of digital information possible. This project is to design and implement a cataloguing system of the digital library system suitable for storage, indexing, and retrieving information and providing that information across the Internet. The goal is to allow users to quickly search indices to locate segments of interests and view and manipulate these segments on their remote computers

    Metadata on Biodiversity: Definition and Implementation

    SINP (Information system on nature and landscape) and ECOSCOPE (Observation for research on biodiversity data hub) are two distinct scientific infrastructures on biodiversity relying on different data sources and producers. Their main objective is to document and share information on biodiversity in France. INPN (https://inpn.mnhn.fr) is the reference information system for data related to nature. It manages and disseminates the reference data of the "geodiversity and biodiversity" part of the SINP, and deliver the metadata and data to GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility). For SINP and Ecoscope projects, working groups composed of scientific organisations have defined two compliant metadata profiles, also compliant with INSPIRE Directive, to describe data on this thematic. These profiles are implemented using existing metadata standards: ISO 19115/19139 (for geographic metadata) for SINP and EML (Ecological Metadata Language) and ISO 19115/19139 for ECOSCOPE. A mapping has also been processed between the two profiles, as well as several thesaurus for keywords and a classification system for taxonomic identification are used, so as to ensure interoperability between systems. The profiles are implemented in web applications for editing and managing data (GeoSource/GeoNetwork for SINP and an ad hoc application for ECOSCOPE). These applications allow the harvesting of metadata using OGC/CSW (Catalog Service for the Web) standard. Next steps will support increased metadata visibility through the automatization of web-services

    XML Encoding and Web Services for Spatial OLAP Data Cube Exchange: an SOA Approach

    XML and Web Services technologies have revolutionized the way data are exchanged on the Internet. Meanwhile, Spatial OLAP (SOLAP) tools have emerged to bridge the gap between the Business Intelligence and Geographic Information Systems domains. While Web Services specifications such as XML for Analysis enable the use of OLAP tools in Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) environments, no solution addresses the exchange of complete SOLAP data cubes (comprising both spatial and descriptive data and metadata) in an interoperable fashion. This paper proposes a new XML grammar for the exchange of SOLAP data cubes, containing both spatial and descriptive data and metadata. It enables the delivery of the cube schema, dimension members (including the geometry of spatial members) and fact data. The use of this XML format is then demonstrated in the context of a Web Service. Such services can be deployed in various situations, not limited to traditional client-server platforms but also ubiquitous mobile computing environments

However, deploying heterogeneous GIS software has the tendency to form fragmented data sets and to cause inconsistency. To accomplish data consolidation, we must achieve interoperability between different GIS tools. In my thesis project, I developed Vector and Raster Data Adapters to implement the spatial data consolidation. I deployed ArcIMS to publish the spatial data and metadata onto Internet. Furthermore, the SOAP-Based GIS Web services are implemented to achieve the enterprise information system integration. The contribution of ours in this project is we have streamlined the COTS GIS server, the J2EE coordinator server, the web service provider components, and the COTS web publishing tools into a hybrid web service architecture, in which the enterprise information system integration, the web publishing, and the business-to business online services are uniformed

    Computational Grids are powerful platforms gathering computational power and storage space from thousands of geographically distributed resources. The applications running on such platforms need to efficiently and reliably access the various and heterogeneous distributed resources they offer. This can be achieved by using metadata information describing all available resources. It is therefore crucial to provide efficient metadata management architectures and frameworks. In this paper we describe the design of a Grid metadata management service. We focus on a particular use case: the Knowledge Grid architecture which provides high-level Grid services for distributed knowledge discovery applications. Taking advantage of an existing Grid data-sharing service, namely JuxMem, the proposed solution lies at the border between peer-to-peer systems and Web services

    The organization of satellite imagery seeks to facilitate the presentation and manipulation of spatial information in projects of Land Management's Strategic area from Embrapa Satellite Monitoring, enabling integration between mapped data and interoperability of image data and mapped regions. As a way to standardize this organization, we followed the recommendations of national and international bodies that deal with the standardization of geographic metadata, specifically satellite images. To view this integration, a webmapping interface was created. A webmapping must be prepared to meet the needs of relationship between user and product. In this paper we propose a standardized structure for storage and maintenance of images obtained by satellite sensors aiming its availability on the web through web map services, examples of interoperability. The non-interoperability prevents sharing of information and computing resources. The visualization of web map services takes place through a webmapping that benefits from the organization structure of satellite images proposed in this paper. The hierarchical organization proposed research assistance of satellite images. As they are entered into the database, now new images will be organized in a logical structure, without affecting the search for listings older images. The webmapping allows a direct link between the metadata and geospatial data visualization. Combining web services based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in conjunction with the Flex technology allows the creation of Rich Internet Applications (RIA) giving the user more possibilities of interaction via the Web

    High Quality Discovery in a Web 2.0 World: Architectures for Next Generation Catalogs

    Issues of information and systems architecture underly many of the current debates over the future of cataloging. This talk discusses some ways in which the architecture of the catalog is being redesigned to combine the rich information architecture of library metadata with the robust systems architecture of many Web-based discovery systems. I will show subject map discovery systems that better exploit the relationships in complex ontologies like LCSH, and discuss a Digital Library Federation initiative to promote standards supporting interoperability between discovery systems and ILS data and services. I will also touch on the role of networked architectures in improving the quality and efficiency of library cataloging

    Multimedia information systems have been developed into service-ware. With the paradigms of web services, service oriented architectures (SOA), and Web 2.0 widgets, multimedia has become truly ubiquitous. However, interoperability, scalability, reliability and security are arising challenges at mobile multimedia service development. This paper focuses on the analysis, design, development and evaluation of a middleware that allows access from mobile devices to a bundle of multimedia services. The services are based on the international multimedia metadata description standard MPEG-7. The implementation is based on new generation of service-oriented application servers called Lightweight Application Server (LAS). Mobile web services refer to the fact that mobile servers host web services. A prototype was developed as a proof of concept, showing how to access MPEG-7 based multimedia services from a Mobile Host and the analysis results of providing MPEG-7 based multimedia services in the form of web services from the Mobile Host to other mobile devices. An alternative solution is to apply enterprise service bus technology as the middleware. The performance evaluation results of both approaches show the reliable accessibility of MPEG-7 based multimedia services via the enterprise service bus solution
