    EVALUATION OF ROBOTIC CLEANING TECHNOLOGIES: PRESERVING A BRITISH ICONIC BUILDING

    The engineering building of the University Leicester built-in 1963 has been a British icon for decades now. Applications of Robotic technologies are uprising nowadays, which provides a contingency to manipulate the benefits of robotics for executing challenging and precarious facade cleaning processes. This paper surveys the facade cleaning robotic technologies exist in the market. It exhibits the comparative analysis of four notorious robotic facade cleaning solutions namely Sky Pro, Gekko, BFMR (Building Façade Maintenance Robot) and Sirius_c. The comparison is executed using Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) and Quality Function Deployment (QFD) techniques. This study analyses the performance of the robots based on the critical parameters such as water consumption, cleaning efficiency, cleaning dimensions and ease of implementation. Although none of these robotic solutions are implemented off the shelf, some adaptation on these solutions is necessary for the development of robotic techniques work successfully in real time. This paper proposes a hybrid robotic solution combining the vacuum pump adhesion and wheeled locomotion for the effective cleaning of the complex external building structure based on the MCDA and QFD analysis.     Mechatronic design solution for planar overconstrained cable-driven parallel robot

    Cable-driven parallel robots (CDPRs) combine the successful features of parallel manipulators with the benefits of cable transmissions. The payload is divided among light extendable cables, resulting in an energy-efficient system that can achieve high end-effector acceleration over a huge workspace. A CDPR is formed by a set of actuation units, and a mobile platform, working as an end-effector (EE). The cables, driven by the actuation units, are guided inside the robot workspace using a guidance system and then connected to the mobile platform. The variation of cable lengths is responsible for the EE displacement throughout the robot workspace. These features result in easily reconfigurable systems where the workspace can be modified by relocating the actuation and guidance units. Nevertheless, the use of CDPRs in industrial environments is still limited, due to the drawbacks of employing flexible cables. Indeed, cables impose unilateral constraints that can only exert tensile forces and, consequently, the EE cannot withstand any arbitrary external action. To enhance the robot’s controllability, CDPRs can be overconstrained by employing a number of cables higher than the degrees of freedom of the EE. This allows cables to pull one against the other and to keep the overall system controllable over a wide range of externally applied loads. In this thesis, an eight-cable, planar, overconstrained CDPR is designed: the robot has the deployable and reconfigurable features required by the task. In particular, this CDPR has its actuation units installed into the EE mobile platform, and the frame anchor points can be rearranged to obtain a discrete reconfiguration. The cable arrangement, location of anchor points and mechanical design have been studied, by implementing a hybrid optimisation procedure. The genetic algorithm is combined with a local minimum optimiser, maximizing the CDPR volume index and deriving a mechanical design for the prototype

    As buildings age, facilities management becomes an issue for institutions like Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Throughout a building’s lifecycle, drawings become inaccurate, code compliance becomes dated, and safety hazards emerge. This project developed a framework to investigate and update structural and fire protection systems to ensure code compliance and to generate a comprehensive Building Information Model for functional documentation. Washburn Shops, built as one of the first buildings at WPI in 1867, provides a case study for this facilities management framework

    The ne-xt facades conference is the official International Mid-term Conference of the European COST Action TU1403 ‘Adaptive Facades Network’, an international scientific cooperation with the aim to harmonise, share and disseminate technological knowledge on adaptive facades on the European level. During the mid-term conference first results are presented to stakeholders from industry and design and to the public. The goal is to share knowledge and discuss novel facade concepts, effective evaluation tools and design methods for adaptive facades. Alongside the contributions from members of the COST Action, the conference received many contributions from external researchers and the industry. This added to the interesting debate about adaptive facades we believe it was an excellent stage to test the first results of the COST Action
