    Requirements of the SALTY project

    This document is the first external deliverable of the SALTY project (Self-Adaptive very Large disTributed sYstems), funded by the ANR under contract ANR-09-SEGI-012. It is the result of task 1.1 of the Work Package (WP) 1 : Requirements and Architecture. Its objective is to identify and collect requirements from use cases that are going to be developed in WP 4 (Use cases and Validation). Based on the study and classification of the use cases, requirements against the envisaged framework are then determined and organized in features. These features will aim at guide and control the advances in all work packages of the project. As a start, features are classified, briefly described and related scenarios in the defined use cases are pinpointed. In the following tasks and deliverables, these features will facilitate design by assigning priorities to them and defining success criteria at a finer grain as the project progresses. This report, as the first external document, has no dependency to any other external documents and serves as a reference to future external documents. As it has been built from the use cases studies that have been synthesized in two internal documents of the project, extracts from the two documents are made available as appendices (cf. appen- dices B and C)

    Modelling and Optimisation of GSM and UMTS Radio Access Networks

    The size and complexity of mobile communication networks have increased in the last years making network management a very complicated task. GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) systems are in a mature state now. Thus, non-optimal performance does not come from typical network start-up problems, but, more likely, from the mismatching between traffic, network or propagation models used for network planning, and their real counterparts. Such differences cause network congestion problems both in signalling and data channels. With the aim of maximising the financial benefits on their mature networks, operators do not solve anymore congestion problems by adding new radio resources, as they usually did. Alternatively, two main strategies can be adopted, a) a better assignment of radio resources through a re-planning approach, and/or b) the automatic configuration (optimisation, in a wide sense) of network parameters. Both techniques aim to adapt the network to the actual traffic and propagation conditions. Moreover, a new heterogenous scenario, where several services and Radio Access Technologies (RATs) coexist in the same area, is now common, causing new unbalanced traffic scenarios and congestion problems. In this thesis, several optimisation and modelling methods are proposed to solve congestion problems in data and signalling channels for single- and multi-RAT scenarios

    Mechatronic Systems

    Mechatronics, the synergistic blend of mechanics, electronics, and computer science, has evolved over the past twenty five years, leading to a novel stage of engineering design. By integrating the best design practices with the most advanced technologies, mechatronics aims at realizing high-quality products, guaranteeing at the same time a substantial reduction of time and costs of manufacturing. Mechatronic systems are manifold and range from machine components, motion generators, and power producing machines to more complex devices, such as robotic systems and transportation vehicles. With its twenty chapters, which collect contributions from many researchers worldwide, this book provides an excellent survey of recent work in the field of mechatronics with applications in various fields, like robotics, medical and assistive technology, human-machine interaction, unmanned vehicles, manufacturing, and education. We would like to thank all the authors who have invested a great deal of time to write such interesting chapters, which we are sure will be valuable to the readers. Chapters 1 to 6 deal with applications of mechatronics for the development of robotic systems. Medical and assistive technologies and human-machine interaction systems are the topic of chapters 7 to 13.Chapters 14 and 15 concern mechatronic systems for autonomous vehicles. Chapters 16-19 deal with mechatronics in manufacturing contexts. Chapter 20 concludes the book, describing a method for the installation of mechatronics education in schools

    Capacity analysis in different systems exploiting mobility of VANETs

    Improving road safety and traffic efficiency has been a long-term endeavor for not only government but also automobile industry and academia. After the U.S. Federal Communication Commission (FCC) allocated a 75 MHz spectrum at 5.9 GHz for vehicular communications, the vehicular ad hoc network (VANET), as an instantiation of the mobile ad hoc network (MANET) with much higher node mobility, opens a new door to combat the road fatalities. In VANETs, a variety of applications ranging from safety related (e.g. emergency report, collision warning) to non-safety-related (e.g. infotainment and entertainment) can be enabled by vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-roadside (V2R) communications. However, the flourish of VANET still hinges fully understanding and managing the challenges that the public concerns, for example, capacity and connectivity issues due to the high mobility of vehicles. In this thesis, we investigate how vehicle mobility can impact the performance in three important VANET-involved systems, i.e., pure VANET, VANET-enhanced intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and fast electric vehicle (EV) charging systems. First, in pure VANET, our work shows that the network data-traffic can be balanced and the network throughput can be improved with the help of the vehicle mobility differentiation. Furthermore, leveraging vehicular communications of VANETs, the mobility-aware real-time path planning can be designed to smooth the vehicle traffic in an ITS, through which the traffic congestion in urban scenarios can be effectively relieved. In addition, with the consideration of the range anxiety caused by mobility, coordinated charging can provide efficient charging plans for electric vehicles (EVs) to improve the overall energy utilization while preventing an electric power system from overloading. To this end, we try to answer the following questions: Q1) How to utilize mobility characteristics of vehicles to derive the achievable asymptotic throughput capacity in pure VANETs? Q2) How to design path planning for mobile vehicles to maximize spatial utility based on mobility differentiation, in order to approach vehicle-traffic capacity in a VANET-enhanced ITS? Q3) How to develop the charging strategies based on mobility of electric vehicles to improve the electricity utility, in order to approach load capacities of charging stations in VANET-enhanced smart grid? To achieve the first objective, we consider the unique features of VANETs and derive the scaling law of VANETs throughput capacity in the data uploading scenario. We show that in both free-space propagation and non-free-space propagation environments, the achievable throughput capacity of individual vehicle scales as Θ(1logn)with\Theta (\frac{1}{{\log n}}) with ndenotingthepopulationofasetofhomogenousvehiclesinthenetwork.Toachievethesecondobjective,wefirstestablishaVANETenhancedITS,whichincorporatesVANETstoenablerealtimecommunicationsamongvehicles,roadsideunits(RSUs),andavehicletrafficserverinanefficientway.Then,weproposearealtimepathplanningalgorithm,whichnotonlyimprovestheoverallspatialutilizationofaroadnetworkbutalsoreducesaveragevehicletravelcostforavoidingvehiclesfromgettingstuckincongestion.Toachievethethirdobjective,weinvestigateasmartgridinvolvedEVfastchargingsystem,withenhancedcommunicationcapabilities,i.e.,aVANETenhancedsmartgrid.ItexploitsVANETstosupportrealtimecommunicationsamongRSUsandhighlymobileEVsforrealtimevehiclemobilityinformationcollectionorchargingdecisiondispatch.Then,weproposeamobilityawarecoordinatedchargingstrategyforEVs,whichnotonlyimprovestheoverallenergyutilizationwhileavoidingpowersystemoverloading,butalsoaddressestherangeanxietiesofindividualEVsbyreducingtheaveragetravelcost.Insummary,theanalysisdevelopedandthescalinglawderivedin denoting the population of a set of homogenous vehicles in the network. To achieve the second objective, we first establish a VANET-enhanced ITS, which incorporates VANETs to enable real-time communications among vehicles, road side units (RSUs), and a vehicle-traffic server in an efficient way. Then, we propose a real-time path planning algorithm, which not only improves the overall spatial utilization of a road network but also reduces average vehicle travel cost for avoiding vehicles from getting stuck in congestion. To achieve the third objective, we investigate a smart grid involved EV fast charging system, with enhanced communication capabilities, i.e., a VANET-enhanced smart grid. It exploits VANETs to support real-time communications among RSUs and highly mobile EVs for real-time vehicle mobility information collection or charging decision dispatch. Then, we propose a mobility-aware coordinated charging strategy for EVs, which not only improves the overall energy utilization while avoiding power system overloading, but also addresses the range anxieties of individual EVs by reducing the average travel cost. In summary, the analysis developed and the scaling law derived in Q1ofthisthesisispracticalandfundamentaltorevealtherelationshipbetweenthemobilityofvehiclesandthenetworkperformanceinVANETs.Andthestrategiesproposedin of this thesis is practical and fundamental to reveal the relationship between the mobility of vehicles and the network performance in VANETs. And the strategies proposed in Q2and and Q3$ of the thesis are meaningful in exploiting/leveraging the vehicle mobility differentiation to improve the system performance in order to approach the corresponding capacities

    Pedestrian Mobility Mining with Movement Patterns

    In street-based mobility mining, pedestrian volume estimation receives increasing attention, as it provides important applications such as billboard evaluation, attraction ranking and emergency support systems. In practice, empirical measurements are sparse due to budget limitations and constrained mounting options. Therefore, estimation of pedestrian quantity is required to perform pedestrian mobility analysis at unobserved locations. Accurate pedestrian mobility analysis is difficult to achieve due to the non-random path selection of individual pedestrians (resulting from motivated movement behaviour), causing the pedestrian volumes to distribute non-uniformly among the traffic network. Existing approaches (pedestrian simulations and data mining methods) are hard to adjust to sensor measurements or require more expensive input data (e.g. high fidelity floor plans or total number of pedestrians in the site) and are thus unfeasible. In order to achieve a mobility model that encodes pedestrian volumes accurately, we propose two methods under the regression framework which overcome the limitations of existing methods. Namely, these two methods incorporate not just topological information and episodic sensor readings, but also prior knowledge on movement preferences and movement patterns. The first one is based on Least Squares Regression (LSR). The advantage of this method is the easy inclusion of route choice heuristics and robustness towards contradicting measurements. The second method is Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). The advantages of this method are the possibilities to include expert knowledge on pedestrian movement and to estimate the uncertainty in predicting the unknown frequencies. Furthermore the kernel matrix of the pedestrian frequencies returned by the method supports sensor placement decisions. Major benefits of the regression approach are (1) seamless integration of expert data and (2) simple reproduction of sensor measurements. Further advantages are (3) invariance of the results against traffic network homeomorphism and (4) the computational complexity depends not on the number of modeled pedestrians but on the traffic network complexity. We compare our novel approaches to state-of-the-art pedestrian simulation (Generalized Centrifugal Force Model) as well as existing Data Mining methods for traffic volume estimation (Spatial k-Nearest Neighbour) and commonly used graph kernels for the Gaussian Process Regression (Squared Exponential, Regularized Laplacian and Diffusion Kernel) in terms of prediction performance (measured with mean absolute error). Our methods showed significantly lower error rates. Since pattern knowledge is not easy to obtain, we present algorithms for pattern acquisition and analysis from Episodic Movement Data. The proposed analysis of Episodic Movement Data involve spatio-temporal aggregation of visits and flows, cluster analyses and dependency models. For pedestrian mobility data collection we further developed and successfully applied the recently evolved Bluetooth tracking technology. The introduced methods are combined to a system for pedestrian mobility analysis which comprises three layers. The Sensor Layer (1) monitors geo-coded sensor recordings on people’s presence and hands this episodic movement data in as input to the next layer. By use of standardized Open Geographic Consortium (OGC) compliant interfaces for data collection, we support seamless integration of various sensor technologies depending on the application requirements. The Query Layer (2) interacts with the user, who could ask for analyses within a given region and a certain time interval. Results are returned to the user in OGC conform Geography Markup Language (GML) format. The user query triggers the (3) Analysis Layer which utilizes the mobility model for pedestrian volume estimation. The proposed approach is promising for location performance evaluation and attractor identification. Thus, it was successfully applied to numerous industrial applications: Zurich central train station, the zoo of Duisburg (Germany) and a football stadium (Stade des Costières Nîmes, France)
