Neutrino Mass and Mixing: from Theory to Experiment

    Get PDF
The origin of fermion mass hierarchies and mixings is one of the unresolved and most difficult problem in high-energy physics. One possibility to address the flavour problem is by extending the Standard Model to include a family symmetry. In the recent years it has become very popular to use non-Abelian discrete flavour symmetries because of their power in the prediction of the large leptonic mixing angles relevant for neutrino oscillation experiments. Here we give an introduction to the flavour problem and to discrete groups which have been used to attempt a solution for it. We review the current status of models in the light of the recent measurement of the reactor angle and we consider different model building directions taken. The use of the flavons or multi Higgs scalars in model building is discussed as well as the direct vs. indirect approaches. We also focus on the possibility to distinguish experimentally flavour symmetry models by means of mixing sum rules and mass sum rules. In fact, we illustrate in this review the complete path from mathematics, via model building, to experiments, so that any reader interested to start working in the field could use this text as a starting point in order to get a broad overview of the different subject areas.Comment: Accepted for publication in NJP, 62 pages, 9 tables, 7 figure

Antecedents and outcomes of brand management from the perspective of resource based view (RBV) theory

    Get PDF
Brand management requires greater emphasis on internal factors to increase brand performance. A model of antecedents and outcomes of brand management is developed in this study based on the Resource Based View (RBV) Theory. Top management emphasis on brand, corporate supportive resources and market orientation are identified as crucial internal factors or antecedents for success of brand management. Apart from that, the brand management measurement are expanded in this study with the introduction of three new marketing constructs namely marketing capabilities, innovation and brand orientation as new dimensions in brand management which currently comprised of management related constructs. This study also contributes in the brand management of small and medium enterprise (SMEs) literature as previous studies mainly focused on the brand management for multinational companies or large organizations. One important issue of SMEs is the “internal” brand management which is currently under-researched even though it is critical in brand building and management. Therefore, this research aims to highlight the antecedents and outcomes of brand management in Malaysians’ SMEs based on RBV theory. A comprehensive literature review was done and a conceptual model is proposed in this literature review

Interplay between crystal-size and disorder effects in the high-energy optical response of photonic crystal slabs

    Get PDF
Experimental reflectance spectra have been obtained for colloidal crystals whose widths ranged from one to several sphere monolayers, and their features in the higher order band energy range have been reproduced theoretically. In order to fit the measured data, optical extinction has been introduced in the theoretical model, which accounts for structure imperfections and disorder, the main sources of losses in an actual measurement. A complex spectrum in the high frequency region is observed even for one ordered monolayer, being this peak structure gradually modified as more layers are piled up. This allowed us to identify which peaks are reminiscent of the optical reflectance features of a single close-packed layer and which are the result of building up a three dimensional periodicity. A clear correlation between the amount of extinction introduced in the fitting and the slab width has been found, which demonstrates that wider real crystals produce less diffusely scattered light. At the same time, we find that the optical response of thinner crystals is more robust against the introduction of extinction than that of thicker ones, for which the effect is dramatic.Consejo Superior de Investigaciones CientĂficas 2005AR0070Universidad de Buenos Aires ANPCYT-BID 802Agencia Nacional de PromociĂłn CientĂfica y TecnolĂłgica OC-AR03-14099Ministerio de Ciencia y EducaciĂłn MAT2005-0302

The Development of Building Information Modelling (BIM) Performance Model for the Malaysian Construction Industry

    Get PDF
The concept of Building Information Modelling (BIM) has attracted greater attention in the Malaysian construction industry since its introduction in 2007. Several projects in Malaysia such as Pusat Kanser Negara and Convocation Hall, UTHM have adopted this concept. One of the benefits of BIM is the projection of a 3D image of the proposed building, which allows stakeholders to get a better idea of the actual building. BIM also improves the planning and design process of the project and thus the quality of the actual building. These advantages of the BIM concept are crucial for the success of the project. Despite the implementation and benefits of BIM, there are still uncertainties about the actual performance of organisations using BIM. This is because there are no evaluation tools or models in Malaysia that can evaluate BIM performance of BIM. Therefore, this study aims to develop a performance model for the implementation of BIM in the Malaysian construction industry. In this study, the AHP technique was used to collect data. The AHP results have successfully assigned weights to all BIM performance metrics. The consensus value also exceeds 50%, which confirms that the experts' agreement on the weighting of the metrics is acceptable. In conclusion, the proposed and developed BIM performance model could be useful to practitioners, especially the government and CIDB, in evaluating the performance of BIM organisations in the Malaysian construction industry. These measurement results could be a basis for future improvements for BIM organisations

    Company Maturity Matrix

    Get PDF
The paper presents a Company Maturity Matrix as the possible interaction between two critical variables in management science: “Anti-Fragile” introduced by Nasim Taleb and measurement of cumulative experience as ability to manage company effectiveness and efficiency. The approach is to develop and represent a model as matrix coming from Boston Group Matrix. Both of variables are known and widely discussed, but the “Anti-Fragile” concept after its introduction has been isolated from other approaches, tools and measurements as a single research field. The aim of this research is to develop a simple framework (model) that could help to deeply understand the maturity level of a company, and use this matrix as the tool to develop different aspects of management in the company. On the next step, this theoretical framework can be used in empirical validation, which will lead to the building of a company life-cycle management.

Immersive Virtual Worlds in Educational Practice: Introducing Educators to Second Life

This paper reports outcomes of the second iteration of a longitudinal action research study on the affordances of Second Life for enriched online teaching and learning. Introduction to Second for Educators was a professional development opportunity offered to graduate students, faculty, and administrators as a distance course in spring 2009. Participants’ wiki reflections and exit questionnaires were analyzed to determine the effectiveness of a constructivist instructional design using guided discovery within a supportive Community of Inquiry [CoI]. Results indicate that the constructivist design ensures a level of facilitation requisite to successfully scaffolding novices’ experiential learning inworld. The CoI model is well supported in the data, with some deficits in cognitive presence. Challenges persist in the areas of technology and time. Action items for the Fall 2009 iteration include increasing activities to maximize SL affordances for building, problem solving, and peer collaboration, and adjusting measurement tools for improved future data analysis

The advantages of information management through building information modelling

    Get PDF
As building information modelling (BIM) is positioned by governments and construction professionals as a solution to the problems in the construction industry, research is needed into the benefits BIM actually confers. The focus here is on the effectiveness of BIM as a medium for communicating information within a construction team. A case study of an offsite precast concrete fabrication facility was conducted. At the time of the study, the facility was supplying precast units for four public sector projects, and using four information management systems: e-mail, a construction project extranet tool, an Enterprise Resource Planning system and a new BIM-based system. The flow of information through the four media was measured and visualized as the projects progressed. This quantitative measurement of information flow was combined with qualitative data from interviews with facility staff. It was found that the introduction of the BIM-based system diverted information flow through the building model and away from the extranet system. The use of e-mail was largely unaffected. BIM allowed considerably more accurate, on-time and appropriate exchange of information. It is concluded it is possible to quantify some of the benefits of BIM to information management. This research paves the way for future research into the management of more construction project information linked more closely to building models
