    Hunting Distributed Malware with the k-Calculus

    The defense of computer systems from malicious software attacks, such as viruses and worms, is a key aspect of computer security. The analogy between malicious software and biological infections suggested us to use the k-calculus, a formalism originally developed for the analysis of biological systems, for the formalization and analysis of malicious software. By modeling the different actors involved in a malicious code attack in the k-calculus and by simulating their behavior, it is possible to extract important information that can drive in the choice of the defense technique to apply

    Third, we have analyzed the tradeoff between delay caused by filtering of worms at routers, and the delay due to worms' excessive amount of network traffic. We have used the optimal control problem, to determine the appropriate tradeoffs between these two delays for a given rate of a worm spreading. Using our technique we can minimize the overall network delay by finding the number of routers that should perform filtering and the time at which they should start the filtering process.Many early Internet protocols were designed without a fundamentally secure infrastructure and hence vulnerable to attacks such as denial of service (DoS) attacks and worms. DoS attacks attempt to consume the resources of a remote host or network, thereby denying or degrading service to legitimate users. Network forensics is an emerging area wherein the source or the cause of the attacker is determined using IDS tools. The problem of finding the source(s) of attack(s) is called the "trace back problem". Lately, Internet worms have become a major problem for the security of computer networks, causing considerable amount of resources and time to be spent recovering from the disruption of systems. In addition to breaking down victims, these worms create large amounts of unnecessary network data traffic that results in network congestion, thereby affecting the entire network.In this dissertation, first we solve the trace back problem more efficiently in terms of the number of routers needed to complete the track back. We provide an efficient algorithm to decompose a network into connected components and construct a terminal network. We show that for a terminal network with n routers, the trace back can be completed in O(log n) steps.Second, we apply two classical epidemic SIS and SIR models to study the spread of Internet Worm. The analytical models that we provide are useful in determining the rate of spread and time required to infect a majority of the nodes in the network. Our simulation results on large Internet like topologies show that in a fairly small amount of time, 80% of the network nodes is infected

    A Game Theoretical Method for Cost-Benefit Analysis of Malware Dissemination Prevention

    Copyright © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. Literature in malware proliferation focuses on modeling and analyzing its spread dynamics. Epidemiology models, which are inspired by the characteristics of biological disease spread in human populations, have been used against this threat to analyze the way malware spreads in a network. This work presents a modified version of the commonly used epidemiology models Susceptible Infected Recovered (SIR) and Susceptible Infected Susceptible (SIS), which incorporates the ability to capture the relationships between nodes within a network, along with their effect on malware dissemination process. Drawing upon a model that illustrates the network’s behavior based on the attacker’s and the defender’s choices, we use game theory to compute optimal strategies for the defender to minimize the effect of malware spread, at the same time minimizing the security cost. We consider three defense mechanisms: patch, removal, and patch and removal, which correspond to the defender’s strategy and use probabilistically with a certain rate. The attacker chooses the type of attack according to its effectiveness and cost. Through the interaction between the two opponents we infer the optimal strategy for both players, known as Nash Equilibrium, evaluating the related payoffs. Hence, our model provides a cost-benefit risk management framework for managing malware spread in computer networks

    The Internet is the most complex system ever created in human history. Therefore, its dynamics and traffic unsurprisingly take on a rich variety of complex dynamics, self-organization, and other phenomena that have been researched for years. This paper is a review of the complex dynamics of Internet traffic. Departing from normal treatises, we will take a view from both the network engineering and physics perspectives showing the strengths and weaknesses as well as insights of both.     Analysis of Routing Worm Infection Rates on an IPV4 Network

    Malicious logic, specifically worms, has caused monetary expenditure problems to network users in the past. Worms, like Slammer and Code Red, have infected thousands of systems and brought the Internet to a standstill. This research examines the ability of the original Slammer worm, the Slammer based routing worm proposed by Zou et al, and a new Single Slash Eight (SSE) routing worm proposed by this research to infect vulnerable systems within a given address space. This research investigates the Slammer worm\u27s ability to generate a uniform random IP addresses in a given address space. Finally, a comparison of the speed increase from computing systems available today versus those in use during the original Slammer release is performed. This research finds that the both the Slammer based routing worm and the SSE routing worm are faster than the original Slammer. The random number generator of the original Slammer worm does generate a statistically uniform distribution of addresses within the range under test. Further, this research shows that despite the previous research into the speed of worm propagation, there is a large void in testing worms on the systems available today that need to be investigated. The speed of the computing systems that the worms operated on in the past were more than three times slower than today\u27s systems. As the speed of computer systems continue to grow, the speed of worm propagation should increase with it as their scan rates directly relate to their infection rate. As such, the immunity of the future IPv6 network, from scanning worms may need to be reexamined

    MFIRE-2: A Multi Agent System for Flow-based Intrusion Detection Using Stochastic Search

    Detecting attacks targeted against military and commercial computer networks is a crucial element in the domain of cyberwarfare. The traditional method of signature-based intrusion detection is a primary mechanism to alert administrators to malicious activity. However, signature-based methods are not capable of detecting new or novel attacks. This research continues the development of a novel simulated, multiagent, flow-based intrusion detection system called MFIRE. Agents in the network are trained to recognize common attacks, and they share data with other agents to improve the overall effectiveness of the system. A Support Vector Machine (SVM) is the primary classifier with which agents determine an attack is occurring. Agents are prompted to move to different locations within the network to find better vantage points, and two methods for achieving this are developed. One uses a centralized reputation-based model, and the other uses a decentralized model optimized with stochastic search. The latter is tested for basic functionality. The reputation model is extensively tested in two configurations and results show that it is significantly superior to a system with non-moving agents. The resulting system, MFIRE-2, demonstrates exciting new network defense capabilities, and should be considered for implementation in future cyberwarfare applications

    A Multi Agent System for Flow-Based Intrusion Detection Using Reputation and Evolutionary Computation

    The rising sophistication of cyber threats as well as the improvement of physical computer network properties present increasing challenges to contemporary Intrusion Detection (ID) techniques. To respond to these challenges, a multi agent system (MAS) coupled with flow-based ID techniques may effectively complement traditional ID systems. This paper develops: 1) a scalable software architecture for a new, self-organized, multi agent, flow-based ID system; and 2) a network simulation environment suitable for evaluating implementations of this MAS architecture and for other research purposes. Self-organization is achieved via 1) a reputation system that influences agent mobility in the search for effective vantage points in the network; and 2) multi objective evolutionary algorithms that seek effective operational parameter values. This paper illustrates, through quantitative and qualitative evaluation, 1) the conditions for which the reputation system provides a significant benefit; and 2) essential functionality of a complex network simulation environment supporting a broad range of malicious activity scenarios. These results establish an optimistic outlook for further research in flow-based multi agent systems for ID in computer networks
