    Extensions to OpenGL for CAGD.

    Many computer graphic API’s, including OpenGL, emphasize modeling with rectangular patches, which are especially useful in Computer Aided Geomeric Design (CAGD). However, not all shapes are rectangular; some are triangular or more complex. This paper extends the OpenGL library to support the modeling of triangular patches, Coons patches, and Box-splines patches. Compared with the triangular patch created from degenerate rectangular Bezier patch with the existing functions provided by OpenGL, the triangular Bezier patches can be used in certain design situations and allow designers to achieve high-quality results that are less CPU intense and require less storage space. The addition of Coons patches and Box splines to the OpenGL library also give it more functionality. Both patch types give CAGD users more flexibility in designing surfaces. A library for all three patch types was developed as an addition to OpenGL

    Intelligent sensors have begun to play a key part in the monitoring and maintenance of complex infrastructures. Sensors have the capability not only to provide raw data, but also provide information by indicating the reliability of the measurements. The effect of this added information is a voluminous increase in the total data that is gathered. If an operator is required to perceive the state of a complex system, novel methods must be developed for sifting through enormous data sets. Virtual reality (VR) platforms are proposed as ideal candidates for performing this task-- a virtual world will allow the user to experience a complex system that is gathering a multitude of sensor data and are referred as Integrated Awareness models. This thesis presents techniques for visualizing such multiple data sets, specifically - graphical, measurement and health data inside a 3-D VR environment. The focus of this thesis is to develop pathways to generate the required 3-D models without sacrificing visual fidelity. The tasks include creating the visual representation, integrating multi-sensor measurements, creating user-specific visualizations and a performance evaluation of the completed virtual environment

    Design frameworks can be helpful in the development of complex systems needed to automate machines. Designing autonomous off-road machinery requires having the means for managing the complexity of multiple interacting systems. A design framework, consisting of four technical layers, is presented. These layers are (1) machine architecture, (2) machine awareness, (3) machine control, and (4) machine behavior. Examples of technology advanced in development efforts of autonomous, robotic platforms for agricultural applications are provided. Linkages were made to applications in the construction machinery sector. Similarities between agricultural and construction automation exist in each of the technical layers
