    Semantics of Data Mining Services in Cloud Computing

This work was supported by the Research Projects P12-TIC-2958 and TIN2016-81113-R (Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness - Government of Spain).In recent years with the rise of Cloud Computing (CC), many companies providing services in the cloud, are empowering a new series of services to their catalogue, such as data mining (DM) and data processing (DP), taking advantage of the vast computing resources available to them. Different service definition proposals have been put forward to address the problem of describing services in CC in a comprehensive way. Bearing in mind that each provider has its own definition of the logic of its services, and specifically of DM services, it should be pointed out that the possibility of describing services in a flexible way between providers is fundamental in order to maintain the usability and portability of this type of CC services. The use of semantic technologies based on the proposal offered by Linked Data (LD) for the definition of services, allows the design and modelling of DM services, achieving a high degree of interoperability. In this article a schema for the definition of DM services on CC is presented considering all key aspects of service in CC, such as prices, interfaces, Software Level Agreement (SLA), instances or DM work ow, among others. The new schema is based on LD, and it reuses other schemata obtaining a better and more complete definition of the services. In order to validate the completeness of the scheme, a series of DM services have been created where a set of algorithms such as Random Forest (RF) or KMeans are modeled as services.     A Reference Architecture for Service Lifecycle Management – Construction and Application to Designing and Analyzing IT Support

    Service-orientation and the underlying concept of service-oriented architectures are a means to successfully address the need for flexibility and interoperability of software applications, which in turn leads to improved IT support of business processes. With a growing level of diffusion, sophistication and maturity, the number of services and interdependencies is gradually rising. This increasingly requires companies to implement a systematic management of services along their entire lifecycle. Service lifecycle management (SLM), i.e., the management of services from the initiating idea to their disposal, is becoming a crucial success factor. Not surprisingly, the academic and practice communities increasingly postulate comprehensive IT support for SLM to counteract the inherent complexity. The topic is still in its infancy, with no comprehensive models available that help evaluating and designing IT support in SLM. This thesis presents a reference architecture for SLM and applies it to the evaluation and designing of SLM IT support in companies. The artifact, which largely resulted from consortium research efforts, draws from an extensive analysis of existing SLM applications, case studies, focus group discussions, bilateral interviews and existing literature. Formal procedure models and a configuration terminology allow adapting and applying the reference architecture to a company’s individual setting. Corresponding usage examples prove its applicability and demonstrate the arising benefits within various SLM IT support design and evaluation tasks. A statistical analysis of the knowledge embodied within the reference data leads to novel, highly significant findings. For example, contemporary standard applications do not yet emphasize the lifecycle concept but rather tend to focus on small parts of the lifecycle, especially on service operation. This forces user companies either into a best-of-breed or a custom-development strategy if they are to implement integrated IT support for their SLM activities. SLM software vendors and internal software development units need to undergo a paradigm shift in order to better reflect the numerous interdependencies and increasing intertwining within services’ lifecycles.     A Semantic-Oriented Description Framework and Broker Architecture for Publication and Discovery in Cloud Based Conferencing

    Cloud computing is an emerging paradigm for provisioning network, storage, and computing resources on demand using a pay-per-use model. Conferencing is the conversational exchange of media between several parties. Cloud-based conferencing services can provide benefits such as easy introduction of different types of conferences, resource usage efficiency and scalability. A business model has been recently proposed in a position paper for cloud-based conferencing with the following roles: conference substrate provider, conference infrastructure provider, conference platform provider, conference service provider, and broker. Conference substrates are generally atomic and served as elementary building blocks (e.g. signaling, mixing) of conferencing applications. They can be virtualized and shared for resource efficiency purposes. Multiple conferencing substrates can be combined to build a conferencing service (e.g. a dial-out audio signaling conference service composed from dial-out signaling and audio mixer substrates). The focus of this thesis is to design a semantic-oriented description framework for conferencing substrates and an architecture for their publication and discovery. The description framework is made up of a description language and a cloud-based conference ontology. The conference ontology is modeled on the basis of the interacting roles in the proposed cloud-based conferencing business model. The overall publication and discovery architecture for cloud-based conference substrates is made up of three brokers and the related publication and discovery interfaces. The publication and discovery interfaces are modelled using REpresentation State Transfer (REST) interfaces. A prototype is built to demonstrate the feasibility of this architecture. The effectiveness of the architecture is also proved using the performance measurements

    Services networks: concept and research agenda

    Service networks represent an often used but less often defined construct. As part of the Industrial Marketing Management Special Issue on Services Networks we provide an overview of different ways of understanding services networks, particularly from a business marketing and a services systems perspective. We provide our own definition of services networks and introduce three different conceptual layers. These layers are used to describe the different articles in the special issue. A discussion of a tentative research agenda concludes our argument

    Work-life, diversity and intersectionality: a critical review and research agenda

    Work-life issues have important implications at both organizational and individual levels. This paper provides a critical review of the work-life literature from 1990 onwards through the lens of diversity, with particular focus on disparities of power induced by methodological and conceptual framings of work and life. Our review seeks to answer the following questions: What are the gaps and omissions in the work-life research? How may they be overcome? To answer these questions we scrutinize blind spots in treatment of life, diversity and power in work-life research both in positivist and critical scholarship. In order to transcend the blind spots in positivist and critical work-life research, we argue the case for an intersectional approach, which captures the changing realities of family and workforce through the lens of diversity and intersectionality. Our theoretical contribution is three fold: First, our review demonstrates that contemporary framing of life in the work-life literature should be expanded to cover aspects of life beyond domestic life. Second, our review explains why and how other strands of diversity than gender also manifest as salient causes of difference in experiences of the work-life interface. Third, our review reveals that social and historical context has more explanatory power on work-life dynamics than micro-individual level of explanations. Work-life literature should capture the dynamism in these contexts. We also provide a set of useful recommendations to capture and operationalize methodological and theoretical changes required in the work-life literature

    Blueprint model and language for engineering cloud applications

    Abstract: The research presented in this thesis is positioned within the domain of engineering CSBAs. Its contribution is twofold: (1) a uniform specification language, called the Blueprint Specification Language (BSL), for specifying cloud services across several cloud vendors and (2) a set of associated techniques, called the Blueprint Manipulation Techniques (BMTs), for publishing, querying, and composing cloud service specifications with aim to support the flexible design and configuration of an CSBA.
