Unidade de Monitorização em Indicadores de Saúde - UMISAbstract - To understand the importance that nurses assign to simulation in the development of non-technical skills in cardiac arrest event in pre-hospital setting. Background Nursing is projected in the future, developing a patient centred approach consistent with the values, needs and desires of patients, considering process of care as a complex intervention. Simulation based on scenarios is an opportunity to recreate this complexity in a virtual way, to develop the non-technical skills. Methods This study uses an inductive, interpretative and constructivist qualitative research. 7 nurses were interviewed. It was developed a thematic analysis content. Results Three themes were identified: Simulation scenarios in pre-hospital emergencies; The acquisition of knowledge to skills development and Construction of the virtual from the real Conclusions The interviewed nurses present weakness of knowledge about simulation types. Debriefing is relevant to the learning skills: critical thinking. thinking, clinical judgement and decision making. Talking about a Christine Borland sculpture: effective empathy in contemporary anatomy art (and an emerging counterpart in medical training?)

This Introduction and interview discusses the poetical and empathic insights that are a key to the effectiveness of contemporary artist Christine Borland's practice and its relevance to the medical humanities, visual art research and medical students’ training. It takes place in a context of intensive interest in reciprocity and conversation as well as expert exchange between the fields of Medicine and Contemporary Arts. The interview develops an understanding of medical research and the application of its historical resources and contemporary practice-based research in contemporary art gallery exhibitions. Artists tend not to follow prescriptive programmes towards new historical knowledge, however, a desire to form productive relationships between history and contemporary art practice does reveal practical advantages. Borland's research also includes investigations in anatomy, medical practices and conservatio

High Fidelity Simulation: Panacea or Potential Problem?

An expanding trend in health science education is to replace time spent in traditional clinical settings with high fidelity simulation (HFS). Utilizing a ethnographic methodology to observe students as they engaged in HFS and exploratory interviews to uncover student perceptions, this qualitative work sought to further understand the implications of this trend by exploring what students experienced when they interacted with HFS mannequins in simulated environments. Twenty five students attending a large Ontario community college participated in the twenty two HFS scenarios that were evaluated in this study. While the numerous benefits of HFS identified in the literature were also evident in this work, the results emerging from this study suggested that students do not perceive HFS as they do real life. The implications of this perception on the trend to replace time in clinical learning environments with HFS are presented in the discussion

New graduate nurses\u27 perceptions of simulation training

    Get PDF
New graduate nurses enter practice with basic critical thinking skills and have minimal experience applying learned concepts into clinical practice. Hiring institutions aim orientation programs at developing new graduate nurses\u27 skills so that they are better prepared to meet patient needs. Human Patient Simulation is one tool employers have recently begun using. A qualitative study was conducted to gain insight into seven new graduate nurses\u27 perceptions of utilizing simulated mock code training during the orientation process. Analysis of the focus group discussion identified four emerging themes: Developing Confidence, Developing Knowledge Base, Developing Critical Thinking, and Developing a Sense of Realism. Each of the four emerging themes contained sub-themes. This research showed that simulation can be a beneficial tool to assist with the new graduate nurse transition into the workforce with the right facilitator and proper safeguards to ensure a sense of realism in the HPS and simulation environment

Nursing students´ satisfaction: a comparison between medium- and high-fidelity simulation training

    Get PDF
Training based on clinical simulation is an effective method of teaching in nursing. Nevertheless, there is no clear evidence about if it is better to use high- or medium-fidelity simulation. The aim is to analyse if students are more satisfied when their clinical simulation practices are based on high-fidelity simulation (HFS) or medium-fidelity simulation (MFS). Students´ satisfaction was assessed using the Satisfaction Scale Questionnaire with High-Fidelity Clinical Simulation. The sample is composed of 393 students from two Spanish Universities. Satisfaction with simulation in nursing students is significantly greater in MFS than HFS. Simulation is beneficial for learning in all its forms, but for the acquisition of basic skills, and at a lower cost, MFS proves to be effective. However, high-fidelity is not always better than medium-fidelity as this depends on the student?s level of knowledge and clinical experienc
