    Performance and Safety Enhancement Strategies in Vehicle Dynamics and Ground Contact

    Recent trends in vehicle engineering are testament to the great efforts that scientists and industries have made to seek solutions to enhance both the performance and safety of vehicular systems. This Special Issue aims to contribute to the study of modern vehicle dynamics, attracting recent experimental and in-simulation advances that are the basis for current technological growth and future mobility. The area involves research, studies, and projects derived from vehicle dynamics that aim to enhance vehicle performance in terms of handling, comfort, and adherence, and to examine safety optimization in the emerging contexts of smart, connected, and autonomous driving.This Special Issue focuses on new findings in the following topics:(1) Experimental and modelling activities that aim to investigate interaction phenomena from the macroscale, analyzing vehicle data, to the microscale, accounting for local contact mechanics; (2) Control strategies focused on vehicle performance enhancement, in terms of handling/grip, comfort and safety for passengers, motorsports, and future mobility scenarios; (3) Innovative technologies to improve the safety and performance of the vehicle and its subsystems; (4) Identification of vehicle and tire/wheel model parameters and status with innovative methodologies and algorithms; (5) Implementation of real-time software, logics, and models in onboard architectures and driving simulators; (6) Studies and analyses oriented toward the correlation among the factors affecting vehicle performance and safety; (7) Application use cases in road and off-road vehicles, e-bikes, motorcycles, buses, trucks, etc

    Advanced Sensing and Control for Connected and Automated Vehicles

    Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are a transformative technology that is expected to change and improve the safety and efficiency of mobility. As the main functional components of CAVs, advanced sensing technologies and control algorithms, which gather environmental information, process data, and control vehicle motion, are of great importance. The development of novel sensing technologies for CAVs has become a hotspot in recent years. Thanks to improved sensing technologies, CAVs are able to interpret sensory information to further detect obstacles, localize their positions, navigate themselves, and interact with other surrounding vehicles in the dynamic environment. Furthermore, leveraging computer vision and other sensing methods, in-cabin humans’ body activities, facial emotions, and even mental states can also be recognized.     ROBI’: A prototype mobile manipulator for agricultural applications

    The design of ROBI', a prototype mobile manipulator for agricultural applications devised following low-cost, low-weight, simplicity, flexibility and modularity requirements, is presented in this work. The mechanical design and the selection of the main components of the motion control system, including sensors and in-wheel motors, is described. The kinematic and dynamic models of the robot are also derived, with the aim to support the design of a trajectory tracking system and to make a preliminary assessment of the design choices, as well. Finally, two simulations, one~specifically related to a realistic trajectory in an agricultural field, show the validity of these choices

    xxvi, 148 p.En la última década ha surgido una tendencia creciente hacia la automatización de los vehículos, generando un cambio significativo en la movilidad, que afectará profundamente el modo de vida de las personas, la logística de mercancías y otros sectores dependientes del transporte. En el desarrollo de la conducción automatizada en entornos estructurados, la seguridad y el confort, como parte de las nuevas funcionalidades de la conducción, aún no se describen de forma estandarizada. Dado que los métodos de prueba utilizan cada vez más las técnicas de simulación, los desarrollos existentes deben adaptarse a este proceso. Por ejemplo, dado que las tecnologías de seguimiento de trayectorias son habilitadores esenciales, se deben aplicar verificaciones exhaustivas en aplicaciones relacionadas como el control de movimiento del vehículo y la estimación de parámetros. Además, las tecnologías en el vehículo deben ser lo suficientemente robustas para cumplir con los requisitos de seguridad, mejorando la redundancia y respaldar una operación a prueba de fallos. Considerando las premisas mencionadas, esta Tesis Doctoral tiene como objetivo el diseño y la implementación de un marco para lograr Sistemas de Conducción Automatizados (ADS) considerando aspectos cruciales, como la ejecución en tiempo real, la robustez, el rango operativo y el ajuste sencillo de parámetros. Para desarrollar las aportaciones relacionadas con este trabajo, se lleva a cabo un estudio del estado del arte actual en tecnologías de alta automatización de conducción. Luego, se propone un método de dos pasos que aborda la validación de ambos modelos de vehículos de simulación y ADS. Se introducen nuevas formulaciones predictivas basadas en modelos para mejorar la seguridad y el confort en el proceso de seguimiento de trayectorias. Por último, se evalúan escenarios de mal funcionamiento para mejorar la seguridad en entornos urbanos, proponiendo una estrategia alternativa de estimación de posicionamiento para minimizar las condiciones de riesgo

    The paper begins with a survey of advances in state-of-the-art minimum-time simulation for road vehicles. The techniques covered include both quasi-steady-state and transient vehicle models, which are combined with trajectories that are either pre-assigned or free to be optimised. The fundamentals of nonlinear optimal control are summarised. These fundamentals are the basis of most of the vehicular optimal control methodologies and solution procedures reported in the literature. The key features of three-dimensional road modelling, vehicle positioning and vehicle modelling are also summarised with a focus on recent developments. Both cars and motorcycles are considered

    Holistic Vehicle Control Using Learning MPC

    In recent years, learning MPC schemes have been introduced to address these challenges of traditional MPC. They typically leverage different machine learning techniques to learn the system dynamics directly from data, allowing it to handle model uncertainty more effectively. Besides, they can adapt to changes by continuously updating the learned model using real-time data, ensuring that the controller remains effective even as the system evolves. However, there are some challenges for the existing learning MPC techniques. Firstly, learning-based control approaches often lack interpretability. Understanding and interpreting the learned models and their learning and prediction processes are crucial for safety critical systems such as vehicle stability systems. Secondly, existing learning MPC techniques rely solely on learned models, which might result in poor performance or instability if the model encounters scenarios that differ significantly from the training data. Thirdly, existing learning MPC techniques typically require large amounts of high-quality data for training accurate models, which can be expensive or impractical in the vehicle stability control domain. To address these challenges, this thesis proposes a novel hybrid learning MPC approach for HVC. The main objective is to leverage the capabilities of machine learning algorithms to learn accurate and adaptive models of vehicle dynamics from data, enabling enhanced control strategies for improved stability and maneuverability. The hybrid learning MPC scheme maintains a traditional physics-based vehicle model and a data-based learning model. In the learned model, a variety of machine-learning techniques can be used to predict vehicle dynamics based on learning from collected vehicle data. The performance of the developed hybrid learning MPC controller using torque vectoring (TV) as the actuator is evaluated through the Matlab/Simulink and CarSim co-simulation with a high-fidelity Chevy Equinox vehicle model under a series of harsh maneuvers. Extensive real-world experiments using a Chevy Equinox electric testing vehicle are conducted. Both simulation results and experimental results show that the developed hybrid learning MPC approach consistently outperforms existing MPC methods with better yaw rate tracking performance and smaller vehicle sideslip under various driving conditions
