Rapid killing of bed bugs (Cimex lectularius L.) on surfaces using heat: application to luggage.

BackgroundThe resistance of bed bugs (Cimex lectularius L.) to chemical insecticides has motivated the development of non-chemical control methods such as heat treatment. However, because bed bugs tend to hide in cracks or crevices, their behavior incidentally generates a thermally insulated microenvironment for themselves. Bed bugs located on the outer surface of luggage are less insulated and potentially more vulnerable to brief heat treatment.ResultsSoft-sided suitcases with adult male bed bugs on the outside were exposed to an air temperature of 70-75 °C. It took 6 min to kill all of the bed bugs, even those that had concealed themselves under zipper flaps or decorative piping. During heating, only one bed bug (out of 250 in total) moved into the luggage (through a closed zipper). Over long periods of time (24 h) at room temperature, adult male bed bugs on the exterior of luggage only infrequently moved inside; only 3% (5/170) had moved inside during 24 h.ConclusionsBrief exterior heat treatment of luggage is a promising way to reduce the spread of bed bugs being transported on the outer surface of luggage. This treatment will not kill bed bugs inside the luggage, but could be a component of integrated management for this pest. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

However, so far in the manufacturing process determination of operation parameter air-out time (X1), air-in time (X2) and heating time (X3), also the response variable which is the circumference of the luggage (Y) are done by trial and error. Therefore the circumference of the luggage is not the same as the standard one. Respone surface method and CCD formula will be used to get this mathematical model which describe the relation between luggage circumference and other influential variables. The best condition to produce luggage with circumference that meets the standard are 6.3 sec for air-out time, 2.6 sec for air-in time and 62 sec for heating time

Application of signal detection theory to the recognition of objects in colour-encoded x-ray images

Aviation security personnel encounter problems when interpreting x-ray images of hand luggage. This research seeks to determine whether the performance of the human operator can be improved, in terms of both reliability and accuracy, through the employment of a novel multiple-view x-ray imaging technique. Thus, a series of experiments were undertaken with the aim of providing evidence for the feasibility of using KDEX displays to aid in the recognition of threatening objects in airport carry-on luggage; and furthermore demonstrate the real-world value of this technique. This thesis describes experiments comparing how introducing depth information affects the performance of aviation security personnel attempting to detect various weapons in x-ray images of hand luggage. Specifically, multiple 2-dimensional (2D) x-ray luggage scans were acquired and processed to create the perception of 3-dimensionality (3D) in kinetic displays. These results were compared with weapon detection in standard static 2D scans of the same luggage. Threatening objects hidden in this luggage were more readily detected in kinetic 3-dimensional images than in the standard images. Initial results were obtained using greyscale images and limited to various types of knives. Subsequent experiments evolved to primarily use pseudo-colour x-ray images

Effects of a hand luggage guiding system on airplane boarding time and passenger experience

This research investigates whether a hand luggage guiding system in overhead bins decreases boarding time and improves boarding experience during aircraft boarding process. A guiding system was developed which allocates and displays the passengers luggage space in the overhead bin. The allocated space is guided by a light strip in front of the display that blinks when a passenger comes close to their allocated luggage space. This system was tested in a Boeing 737 test fuselage. Compared to regular boarding, a boarding time reduction of 16 to 23 seconds was estimated using the hand luggage guiding system in groups of 18 passengers compared with the traditional way of boarding. This corresponds to 3 to 4 minutes of boarding time reduction on a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 189 passengers. In addition, the boarding experience of the new system was significantly higher than regular boarding. Although this system has potential, it is recommended to test it while boarding in an actual flight with passengers
