    Lower bounds to randomized algorithms for graph properties

    AbstractFor any property P on n-vertex graphs, let C(P) be the minimum number of edges needed to be examined by any decision tree algorithm for determining P. In 1975 Rivest and Vuillemin settled the Aanderra-Rosenberg Conjecture, proving that C(P)=Ω(n2) for every nontrivial monotone graph property P. An intriguing open question is whether the theorem remains true when randomized algorithms are allowed. In this paper we show that Ω(n(log n)112 edges need to be examined by any randomized algorithm for determining any nontrivial monotone graph property

    Lower Bounds for Structuring Unreliable Radio Networks

    In this paper, we study lower bounds for randomized solutions to the maximal independent set (MIS) and connected dominating set (CDS) problems in the dual graph model of radio networks---a generalization of the standard graph-based model that now includes unreliable links controlled by an adversary. We begin by proving that a natural geographic constraint on the network topology is required to solve these problems efficiently (i.e., in time polylogarthmic in the network size). We then prove the importance of the assumption that nodes are provided advance knowledge of their reliable neighbors (i.e, neighbors connected by reliable links). Combined, these results answer an open question by proving that the efficient MIS and CDS algorithms from [Censor-Hillel, PODC 2011] are optimal with respect to their dual graph model assumptions.     Approximate F_2-Sketching of Valuation Functions

    We study the problem of constructing a linear sketch of minimum dimension that allows approximation of a given real-valued function f : F_2^n - > R with small expected squared error. We develop a general theory of linear sketching for such functions through which we analyze their dimension for most commonly studied types of valuation functions: additive, budget-additive, coverage, alpha-Lipschitz submodular and matroid rank functions. This gives a characterization of how many bits of information have to be stored about the input x so that one can compute f under additive updates to its coordinates. Our results are tight in most cases and we also give extensions to the distributional version of the problem where the input x in F_2^n is generated uniformly at random. Using known connections with dynamic streaming algorithms, both upper and lower bounds on dimension obtained in our work extend to the space complexity of algorithms evaluating f(x) under long sequences of additive updates to the input x presented as a stream. Similar results hold for simultaneous communication in a distributed setting

    Distributed local approximation algorithms for maximum matching in graphs and hypergraphs

    We describe approximation algorithms in Linial's classic LOCAL model of distributed computing to find maximum-weight matchings in a hypergraph of rank rr. Our main result is a deterministic algorithm to generate a matching which is an O(r)O(r)-approximation to the maximum weight matching, running in O~(rlogΔ+log2Δ+logn)\tilde O(r \log \Delta + \log^2 \Delta + \log^* n) rounds. (Here, the O~()\tilde O() notations hides polyloglog Δ\text{polyloglog } \Delta and polylog r\text{polylog } r factors). This is based on a number of new derandomization techniques extending methods of Ghaffari, Harris & Kuhn (2017). As a main application, we obtain nearly-optimal algorithms for the long-studied problem of maximum-weight graph matching. Specifically, we get a (1+ϵ)(1+\epsilon) approximation algorithm using O~(logΔ/ϵ3+polylog(1/ϵ,loglogn))\tilde O(\log \Delta / \epsilon^3 + \text{polylog}(1/\epsilon, \log \log n)) randomized time and O~(log2Δ/ϵ4+logn/ϵ)\tilde O(\log^2 \Delta / \epsilon^4 + \log^*n / \epsilon) deterministic time. The second application is a faster algorithm for hypergraph maximal matching, a versatile subroutine introduced in Ghaffari et al. (2017) for a variety of local graph algorithms. This gives an algorithm for (2Δ1)(2 \Delta - 1)-edge-list coloring in O~(log2Δlogn)\tilde O(\log^2 \Delta \log n) rounds deterministically or O~((loglogn)3)\tilde O( (\log \log n)^3 ) rounds randomly. Another consequence (with additional optimizations) is an algorithm which generates an edge-orientation with out-degree at most (1+ϵ)λ\lceil (1+\epsilon) \lambda \rceil for a graph of arboricity λ\lambda; for fixed ϵ\epsilon this runs in O~(log6n)\tilde O(\log^6 n) rounds deterministically or O~(log3n)\tilde O(\log^3 n ) rounds randomly

    Quantum query complexity of minor-closed graph properties

    We study the quantum query complexity of minor-closed graph properties, which include such problems as determining whether an nn-vertex graph is planar, is a forest, or does not contain a path of a given length. We show that most minor-closed properties---those that cannot be characterized by a finite set of forbidden subgraphs---have quantum query complexity \Theta(n^{3/2}). To establish this, we prove an adversary lower bound using a detailed analysis of the structure of minor-closed properties with respect to forbidden topological minors and forbidden subgraphs. On the other hand, we show that minor-closed properties (and more generally, sparse graph properties) that can be characterized by finitely many forbidden subgraphs can be solved strictly faster, in o(n^{3/2}) queries. Our algorithms are a novel application of the quantum walk search framework and give improved upper bounds for several subgraph-finding problems.Comment: v1: 25 pages, 2 figures. v2: 26 page

    Parameterized Distributed Algorithms

    In this work, we initiate a thorough study of graph optimization problems parameterized by the output size in the distributed setting. In such a problem, an algorithm decides whether a solution of size bounded by k exists and if so, it finds one. We study fundamental problems, including Minimum Vertex Cover (MVC), Maximum Independent Set (MaxIS), Maximum Matching (MaxM), and many others, in both the LOCAL and CONGEST distributed computation models. We present lower bounds for the round complexity of solving parameterized problems in both models, together with optimal and near-optimal upper bounds. Our results extend beyond the scope of parameterized problems. We show that any LOCAL (1+epsilon)-approximation algorithm for the above problems must take Omega(epsilon^{-1}) rounds. Joined with the (epsilon^{-1}log n)^{O(1)} rounds algorithm of [Ghaffari et al., 2017] and the Omega (sqrt{(log n)/(log log n)}) lower bound of [Fabian Kuhn et al., 2016], the lower bounds match the upper bound up to polynomial factors in both parameters. We also show that our parameterized approach reduces the runtime of exact and approximate CONGEST algorithms for MVC and MaxM if the optimal solution is small, without knowing its size beforehand. Finally, we propose the first o(n^2) rounds CONGEST algorithms that approximate MVC within a factor strictly smaller than 2
