Certification of inequalities involving transcendental functions: combining SDP and max-plus approximation
We consider the problem of certifying an inequality of the form ,
, where is a multivariate transcendental function, and
is a compact semialgebraic set. We introduce a certification method, combining
semialgebraic optimization and max-plus approximation. We assume that is
given by a syntaxic tree, the constituents of which involve semialgebraic
operations as well as some transcendental functions like , ,
, etc. We bound some of these constituents by suprema or infima of
quadratic forms (max-plus approximation method, initially introduced in optimal
control), leading to semialgebraic optimization problems which we solve by
semidefinite relaxations. The max-plus approximation is iteratively refined and
combined with branch and bound techniques to reduce the relaxation gap.
Illustrative examples of application of this algorithm are provided, explaining
how we solved tight inequalities issued from the Flyspeck project (one of the
main purposes of which is to certify numerical inequalities used in the proof

On the honeycomb conjecture for Robin Laplacian eigenvalues
We prove that the optimal cluster problem for the sum of the first Robin
eigenvalue of the Laplacian, in the limit of a large number of convex cells, is
asymptotically solved by (the Cheeger sets of) the honeycomb of regular
hexagons. The same result is established for the Robin torsional rigidity
Certification of Real Inequalities -- Templates and Sums of Squares
We consider the problem of certifying lower bounds for real-valued
multivariate transcendental functions. The functions we are dealing with are
nonlinear and involve semialgebraic operations as well as some transcendental
functions like , , , etc. Our general framework is to use
different approximation methods to relax the original problem into polynomial
optimization problems, which we solve by sparse sums of squares relaxations. In
particular, we combine the ideas of the maxplus estimators (originally
introduced in optimal control) and of the linear templates (originally
introduced in static analysis by abstract interpretation). The nonlinear
templates control the complexity of the semialgebraic relaxations at the price
of coarsening the maxplus approximations. In that way, we arrive at a new -
template based - certified global optimization method, which exploits both the
precision of sums of squares relaxations and the scalability of abstraction
methods. We analyze the performance of the method on problems from the global
optimization literature, as well as medium-size inequalities issued from the

Problem-based optimal scenario generation and reduction in stochastic programming
Scenarios are indispensable ingredients for the numerical solution of stochastic programs. Earlier approaches to optimal scenario generation and reduction are based on stability arguments involving distances of probability measures. In this paper we review those ideas and suggest to make use of stability estimates based only on problem specific data. For linear two-stage stochastic programs we show that the problem-based approach to optimal scenario generation can be reformulated as best approximation problem for the expected recourse function which in turn can be rewritten as a generalized semi-infinite program. We show that the latter is convex if either right-hand sides or costs are random and can be transformed into a semi-infinite program in a number of cases. We also consider problem-based optimal scenario reduction for two-stage models and optimal scenario generation for chance constrained programs. Finally, we discuss problem-based scenario generation for the classical newsvendor problem
Certified Roundoff Error Bounds Using Semidefinite Programming.
Roundoff errors cannot be avoided when implementing numerical programs with finite precision. The ability to reason about rounding is especially important if one wants to explore a range of potential representations, for instance for FPGAs or custom hardware implementation. This problem becomes challenging when the program does not employ solely linear operations as non-linearities are inherent to many interesting computational problems in real-world applications. Existing solutions to reasoning are limited in the presence of nonlinear correlations between variables, leading to either imprecise bounds or high analysis time. Furthermore, while it is easy to implement a straightforward method such as interval arithmetic, sophisticated techniques are less straightforward to implement in a formal setting. Thus there is a need for methods which output certificates that can be formally validated inside a proof assistant. We present a framework to provide upper bounds on absolute roundoff errors. This framework is based on optimization techniques employing semidefinite programming and sums of squares certificates, which can be formally checked inside the Coq theorem prover. Our tool covers a wide range of nonlinear programs, including polynomials and transcendental operations as well as conditional statements. We illustrate the efficiency and precision of this tool on non-trivial programs coming from biology, optimization and space control. Our tool produces more precise error bounds for 37 percent of all programs and yields better performance in 73 percent of all programs
Online Learning: Beyond Regret
We study online learnability of a wide class of problems, extending the
results of (Rakhlin, Sridharan, Tewari, 2010) to general notions of performance
measure well beyond external regret. Our framework simultaneously captures such
well-known notions as internal and general Phi-regret, learning with
non-additive global cost functions, Blackwell's approachability, calibration of
forecasters, adaptive regret, and more. We show that learnability in all these
situations is due to control of the same three quantities: a martingale
convergence term, a term describing the ability to perform well if future is
known, and a generalization of sequential Rademacher complexity, studied in
(Rakhlin, Sridharan, Tewari, 2010). Since we directly study complexity of the
problem instead of focusing on efficient algorithms, we are able to improve and
extend many known results which have been previously derived via an algorithmic
construction
