Dynamic optimization of provider-based scheduling for HPC workloads

    Get PDF
The vast array of cloud providers present in today’s market proffer a suite of High-Performance Computing (HPC) services. However, these offerings are characterized by significant variations in execution times and cost structures. Consequently, selecting the optimal cloud provider and configuring the features of the chosen computing instance (e.g. virtual machines) proves to be a challenging task for users intending to execute HPC workloads. This paper introduces a novel component designed for effortless integration with existing HPC scheduling systems. This module’s primary function is to facilitate the selection of the most appropriate cloud provider for each distinct job, thereby empowering dynamic and adaptive cost-minimization strategies. Through the application of data augmentation techniques and the employment of Continuous Machine Learning, the system is endowed with the capability to operate efficiently with cloud providers that have not been previously utilized. Furthermore, it is capable of tracking the evolution of jobs over time. Our results show that this component can achieve consistent economic savings, based on the quality of the data used in the training phase

Mobile, collaborative augmented reality using cloudlets

The evolution in mobile applications to support advanced interactivity and demanding multimedia features is still ongoing. Novel application concepts (e.g. mobile Augmented Reality (AR)) are however hindered by the inherently limited resources available on mobile platforms (not withstanding the dramatic performance increases of mobile hardware). Offloading resource intensive application components to the cloud, also known as "cyber foraging", has proven to be a valuable solution in a variety of scenarios. However, also for collaborative scenarios, in which data together with its processing are shared between multiple users, this offloading concept is highly promising. In this paper, we investigate the challenges posed by offloading collaborative mobile applications. We present a middleware platform capable of autonomously deploying software components to minimize average CPU load, while guaranteeing smooth collaboration. As a use case, we present and evaluate a collaborative AR application, offering interaction between users, the physical environment as well as with the virtual objects superimposed on this physical environment

Integrating Bayesian Optimization and Machine Learning for the Optimal Configuration of Cloud Systems

Bayesian Optimization (BO) is an efficient method for finding optimal cloud configurations for several types of applications. On the other hand, Machine Learning (ML) can provide helpful knowledge about the application at hand thanks to its predicting capabilities. This work proposes a general approach based on BO, which integrates elements from ML techniques in multiple ways, to find an optimal configuration of recurring jobs running in public and private cloud environments, possibly subject to blackbox constraints, e.g., application execution time or accuracy. We test our approach by considering several use cases, including edge computing, scientific computing, and Big Data applications. Results show that our solution outperforms other state-of-the-art black-box techniques, including classical autotuning and BO- and ML-based algorithms, reducing the number of unfeasible executions and corresponding costs up to 2–4 times

In this dissertation, three problems in image deblurring, inpainting and virtual content insertion are solved in a Bayesian framework.;Camera shake, motion or defocus during exposure leads to image blur. Single image deblurring has achieved remarkable results by solving a MAP problem, but there is no perfect solution due to inaccurate image prior and estimator. In the first part, a new non-blind deconvolution algorithm is proposed. The image prior is represented by a Gaussian Scale Mixture(GSM) model, which is estimated from non-blurry images as training data. Our experimental results on a total twelve natural images have shown that more details are restored than previous deblurring algorithms.;In augmented reality, it is a challenging problem to insert virtual content in video streams by blending it with spatial and temporal information. A generic virtual content insertion (VCI) system is introduced in the second part. To the best of my knowledge, it is the first successful system to insert content on the building facades from street view video streams. Without knowing camera positions, the geometry model of a building facade is established by using a detection and tracking combined strategy. Moreover, motion stabilization, dynamic registration and color harmonization contribute to the excellent augmented performance in this automatic VCI system.;Coding efficiency is an important objective in video coding. In recent years, video coding standards have been developing by adding new tools. However, it costs numerous modifications in the complex coding systems. Therefore, it is desirable to consider alternative standard-compliant approaches without modifying the codec structures. In the third part, an exemplar-based data pruning video compression scheme for intra frame is introduced. Data pruning is used as a pre-processing tool to remove part of video data before they are encoded. At the decoder, missing data is reconstructed by a sparse linear combination of similar patches. The novelty is to create a patch library to exploit similarity of patches. The scheme achieves an average 4% bit rate reduction on some high definition videos

Augmented Probability Simulation Methods for Non-cooperative Games

We present a robust decision support framework with computational algorithms for decision makers in non-cooperative sequential setups. Existing simulation based approaches can be inefficient when there is a large number of feasible decisions and uncertain outcomes. Hence, we provide a novel alternative to solve non-cooperative sequential games based on augmented probability simulation. We propose approaches to approximate subgame perfect equilibria under complete information, assess the robustness of such solutions and, finally, approximate adversarial risk analysis solutions when lacking complete information. This framework could be especially beneficial in application domains such as cybersecurity and counter-terrorism
