A simulation-based approach for solving the flowshop problem

A simulation-based algorithm for the Permutation Flowshop Sequencing Problem (PFSP) is presented. The algorithm uses Monte Carlo Simulation and a discrete version of the triangular distribution to incorporate a randomness criterion in the classical Nawaz, Enscore, and Ham (NEH) heuristic and starts an iterative process in order to obtain a set of alternative solutions to the PFSP. Thus, a random but biased lo We can then consider several properties per solution other than the makespan, such as balanced idle times among machines, number of completed jobs at a given target time, etc. This allows the decision-maker to consider multiple solution characteristics apart from those defined by the aprioristic objective function. Therefore, our methodology provides flexibility during the sequence selection process, which may help to improve the scheduling process. Several tests have been performed to discuss the effectiveness of this approach. The results obtained so far are promising enough to encourage further developments and improvements on the algorithm and its applications in real-life scenarios. In particular, Multi-Agent Simulation is proposed as a promising technique to be explored in future works.Postprint (published version

A greedy heuristic approach for the project scheduling with labour allocation problem

Responding to the growing need of generating a robust project scheduling, in this article we present a greedy algorithm to generate the project baseline schedule. The robustness achieved by integrating two dimensions of the human resources flexibilities. The first is the operators’ polyvalence, i.e. each operator has one or more secondary skill(s) beside his principal one, his mastering level being characterized by a factor we call “efficiency”. The second refers to the working time modulation, i.e. the workers have a flexible time-table that may vary on a daily or weekly basis respecting annualized working strategy. Moreover, the activity processing time is a non-increasing function of the number of workforce allocated to create it, also of their heterogynous working efficiencies. This modelling approach has led to a nonlinear optimization model with mixed variables. We present: the problem under study, the greedy algorithm used to solve it, and then results in comparison with those of the genetic algorithms

The n-job, m-machine flow shop scheduling problem is one of the most general job scheduling problems. This study deals with the criteria of makespan minimization for the flow shop scheduling problem. Artificial Immune Systems (AIS) are new intelligent problem solving techniques that are being used in scheduling problems. AIS can be defined as computational systems inspired by theoretical immunology, observed immune functions, principles and mechanisms in order to solve problems. In this research, a computational method based on clonal selection principle and affinity maturation mechanisms of the immune response is used. The operation parameters of meta-heuristics have an important role on the quality of the solution. Thus, a generic systematic procedure which bases on a multi-step experimental design approach for determining the efficient system parameters for AIS is presented. Experimental results show that, the artificial immune system algorithm is more efficient than both the classical heuristic flow shop scheduling algorithms and simulated annealing.n iş m makina akış tipi iş çizelgeleme problemi en genel iş çizelgeleme problemlerinden biridir.

This edited book presents new results in the area of algorithm development for different types of scheduling problems. In eleven chapters, algorithms for single machine problems, flow-shop and job-shop scheduling problems (including their hybrid (flexible) variants), the resource-constrained project scheduling problem, scheduling problems in complex manufacturing systems and supply chains, and workflow scheduling problems are given. The chapters address such subjects as insertion heuristics for energy-efficient scheduling, the re-scheduling of train traffic in real time, control algorithms for short-term scheduling in manufacturing systems, bi-objective optimization of tortilla production, scheduling problems with uncertain (interval) processing times, workflow scheduling for digital signal processor (DSP) clusters, and many more
