    SPAM detection: Naïve bayesian classification and RPN expression-based LGP approaches compared

    An investigation is performed of a machine learning algorithm and the Bayesian classifier in the spam-filtering context. The paper shows the advantage of the use of Reverse Polish Notation (RPN) expressions with feature extraction compared to the traditional Naïve Bayesian classifier used for spam detection assuming the same features. The performance of the two is investigated using a public corpus and a recent private spam collection, concluding that the system based on RPN LGP (Linear Genetic Programming) gave better results compared to two popularly used open source Bayesian spam filters. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016

    AbstractVarious Web spam features and machine learning structures were constantly proposed to classify Web spam in recent years. The aim of this paper was to provide a comprehensive machine learning algorithms comparison within the Web spam detection community. Several machine learning algorithms and ensemble meta-algorithms as classifiers, area under receiver operating characteristic as performance evaluation and two public available datasets (WEBSPAM-UK2006 and WEBSPAM-UK2007) were experimented in this study. The results have shown that random forest with variations of AdaBoost had achieved 0.937 in WEBSPAM-UK2006 and 0.852 in WEBSPAM-UK2007

    A systematic framework to discover pattern for web spam classification

    Web spam is a big problem for search engine users in World Wide Web. They use deceptive techniques to achieve high rankings. Although many researchers have presented the different approach for classification and web spam detection still it is an open issue in computer science. Analyzing and evaluating these websites can be an effective step for discovering and categorizing the features of these websites. There are several methods and algorithms for detecting those websites, such as decision tree algorithm. In this paper, we present a systematic framework based on CHAID algorithm and a modified string matching algorithm (KMP) for extract features and analysis of these websites.     Detecting Spam Email With Machine Learning Optimized With Bio-Inspired Metaheuristic Algorithms

    Electronic mail has eased communication methods for many organisations as well as individuals. This method is exploited for fraudulent gain by spammers through sending unsolicited emails. This article aims to present a method for detection of spam emails with machine learning algorithms that are optimized with bio-inspired methods. A literature review is carried to explore the efficient methods applied on different datasets to achieve good results. An extensive research was done to implement machine learning models using Naïve Bayes, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, Decision Tree and Multi-Layer Perceptron on seven different email datasets, along with feature extraction and pre-processing. The bio-inspired algorithms like Particle Swarm Optimization and Genetic Algorithm were implemented to optimize the performance of classifiers. Multinomial Naïve Bayes with Genetic Algorithm performed the best overall. The comparison of our results with other machine learning and bio-inspired models to show the best suitable model is also discussed

    Text Categorization Model Based on Linear Support Vector Machine

    Spam mails constitute a lot of nuisances in our electronic mail boxes, as they occupy huge spaces which could rather be used for storing relevant data. They also slow down network connection speed and make communication over a network slow. Attackers have often employed spam mails as a means of sending phishing mails to their targets in order to perpetrate data breach attacks and other forms of cybercrimes. Researchers have developed models using machine learning algorithms and other techniques to filter spam mails from relevant mails, however, some algorithms and classifiers are weak, not robust, and lack visualization models which would make the results interpretable by even non-tech savvy people. In this work, Linear Support Vector Machine (LSVM) was used to develop a text categorization model for email texts based on two categories: Ham and Spam. The processes involved were dataset import, preprocessing (removal of stop words, vectorization), feature selection (weighing and selection), development of classification model (splitting data into train (80%) and test sets (20%), importing classifier, training classifier), evaluation of model, deployment of model and spam filtering application on a server (Heroku) using Flask framework. The Agile methodology was adopted for the system design; the Python programming language was implemented for model development. HTML and CSS was used for the development of the web application. The results from the system testing showed that the system had an overall accuracy of 98.56%, recall: 96.5%, F1-score: 97% and F-beta score of 96.23%. This study therefore could be beneficial to e-mail users, to data analysts, and to researchers in the field of NLP

    Feature Selection by Multiobjective Optimization: Application to Spam Detection System by Neural Networks and Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm

    Networks are strained by spam, which also overloads email servers and blocks mailboxes with unwanted messages and files. Setting the protective level for spam filtering might become even more crucial for email users when malicious steps are taken since they must deal with an increase in the number of valid communications being marked as spam. By finding patterns in email communications, spam detection systems (SDS) have been developed to keep track of spammers and filter email activity. SDS has also enhanced the tool for detecting spam by reducing the rate of false positives and increasing the accuracy of detection. The difficulty with spam classifiers is the abundance of features. The importance of feature selection (FS) comes from its role in directing the feature selection algorithm’s search for ways to improve the SDS’s classification performance and accuracy. As a means of enhancing the performance of the SDS, we use a wrapper technique in this study that is based on the multi-objective grasshopper optimization algorithm (MOGOA) for feature extraction and the recently revised EGOA algorithm for multilayer perceptron (MLP) training. The suggested system’s performance was verified using the SpamBase, SpamAssassin, and UK-2011 datasets. Our research showed that our novel approach outperformed a variety of established practices in the literature by as much as 97.5%, 98.3%, and 96.4% respectively.©2022 the Authors. Published by IEEE.
