    Improving the distributed evolution of software through heuristic evaluation

However, existing software solutions are quite often not an exact fit. Software developers have found multiple ways of approaching the problem of designing software that can be adapted as well as otherwise changed; Most of this effort has been aimed at the structural properties of the software, by creating open-architecture systems. However, there are still significant usability hurdles to overcome. A developer-oriented evaluation of open architecture interfaces could help meet some of these challenges. In this thesis, I present a set of guidelines for designing a developer-oriented interface for software open architectures, developed through a survey of several related fields. I use these guidelines to design and implement an interface to the Maritime Open Architecture Autonomy, one such software framework. Finally, through two case studies, I demonstrate the usefulness of these guidelines as the basis of a low cost method of usability evaluation.     Collaborative design and feasibility assessment of computational nutrient sensing for simulated food-intake tracking in a healthcare environment

    One in four older adults (65 years and over) are living with some form of malnutrition. This increases their odds of hospitalization four-fold and is associated with decreased quality of life and increased mortality. In long-term care (LTC), residents have more complex care needs and the proportion affected is a staggering 54% primarily due to low intake. Tracking intake is important for monitoring whether residents are meeting their nutritional needs however current methods are time-consuming, subjective, and prone to large margins of error. This reduces the utility of tracked data and makes it challenging to identify individuals at-risk in a timely fashion. While technologies exist for tracking food-intake, they have not been designed for use within the LTC context and require a large time burden by the user. Especially in light of the machine learning boom, there is great opportunity to harness learnings from this domain and apply it to the field of nutrition for enhanced food-intake tracking. Additionally, current approaches to monitoring food-intake tracking are limited by the nutritional database to which they are linked making generalizability a challenge. Drawing inspiration from current methods, the desires of end-users (primary users: personal support workers, registered staff, dietitians), and machine learning approaches suitable for this context in which there is limited data available, we investigated novel methods for assessing needs in this environment and imagine an alternative approach. We leveraged image processing and machine learning to remove subjectivity while increasing accuracy and precision to support higher-quality food-intake tracking. This thesis presents the ideation, design, development and evaluation of a collaboratively designed, and feasibility assessment, of computational nutrient sensing for simulated food-intake tracking in the LTC environment. We sought to remove potential barriers to uptake through collaborative design and ongoing end user engagement for developing solution concepts for a novel Automated Food Imaging and Nutrient Intake Tracking (AFINI-T) system while implementing the technology in parallel. More specifically, we demonstrated the effectiveness of applying a modified participatory iterative design process modeled from the Google Sprint framework in the LTC context which identified priority areas and established functional criteria for usability and feasibility. Concurrently, we developed the novel AFINI-T system through the co-integration of image processing and machine learning and guided by the application of food-intake tracking in LTC to address three questions: (1) where is there food? (i.e., food segmentation), (2) how much food was consumed? (i.e., volume estimation) using a fully automatic imaging system for quantifying food-intake. We proposed a novel deep convolutional encoder-decoder food network with depth-refinement (EDFN-D) using an RGB-D camera for quantifying a plate’s remaining food volume relative to reference portions in whole and modified texture foods. To determine (3) what foods are present (i.e., feature extraction and classification), we developed a convolutional autoencoder to learn meaningful food-specific features and developed classifiers which leverage a priori information about when certain foods would be offered and the level of texture modification prescribed to apply real-world constraints of LTC. We sought to address real-world complexity by assessing a wide variety of food items through the construction of a simulated food-intake dataset emulating various degrees of food-intake and modified textures (regular, minced, purĂ©ed). To ensure feasibility-related barriers to uptake were mitigated, we employed a feasibility assessment using the collaboratively designed prototype. Finally, this thesis explores the feasibility of applying biophotonic principles to food as a first step to enhancing food database estimates. Motivated by a theoretical optical dilution model, a novel deep neural network (DNN) was evaluated for estimating relative nutrient density of commercially prepared purĂ©es. For deeper analysis we describe the link between color and two optically active nutrients, vitamin A, and anthocyanins, and suggest it may be feasible to utilize optical properties of foods to enhance nutritional estimation. This research demonstrates a transdisciplinary approach to designing and implementing a novel food-intake tracking system which addresses several shortcomings of the current method. Upon translation, this system may provide additional insights for supporting more timely nutritional interventions through enhanced monitoring of nutritional intake status among LTC residents

    Automated Improvement of Software Design by Search-Based Refactoring

    Le coĂ»t de maintenance du logiciel est estimĂ© Ă  plus de 70% du coĂ»t total du systĂšme, en raison de nombreux facteurs, y compris les besoins des nouveaux utilisateurs, l’adoption de nouvelles technologies et la qualitĂ© des systĂšmes logiciels. De ces facteurs, la qualitĂ© est celle que nous pouvons contrĂŽler et continuellement amĂ©liorer pour empĂȘcher la dĂ©gradation de la performance et la rĂ©duction de l’efficacitĂ© (par exemple, la dĂ©gradation de la conception du logiciel). De plus, pour rester compĂ©titive, l’industrie du logiciel a raccourci ses cycles de lancement afin de fournir de nouveaux produits et fonctionnalitĂ©s plus rapidement, ce qui entraĂźne une pression accrue sur les Ă©quipes de dĂ©veloppeurs et une accĂ©lĂ©ration de l’évolution de la conception du systĂšme. Une façon d’empĂȘcher la dĂ©gradation du logiciel est l’identification et la correction des anti-patrons qui sont des indicateurs de mauvaise qualitĂ© de conception. Pour amĂ©liorer la qualitĂ© de la conception et supprimer les anti-patrons, les dĂ©veloppeurs effectuent de petites transformations prĂ©servant le comportement (c.-Ă -d., refactoring). Le refactoring manuel est coĂ»teux, car il nĂ©cessite (1) d’identifier les entitĂ©s de code qui doivent ĂȘtre refactorisĂ©es ; (2) gĂ©nĂ©rer des opĂ©rations de refactoring pour les classes identifiĂ©es Ă  l’étape prĂ©cĂ©dente ; (3) trouver le bon ordre d’application des refactorings gĂ©nĂ©rĂ©s, pour maximiser le bĂ©nĂ©fice pour la qualitĂ© du code et minimiser les conflits. Ainsi, les chercheurs et les praticiens ont formulĂ© le refactoring comme un problĂšme d’optimisation et utilisent des techniques basĂ©es sur la recherche pour proposer des approches (semi) automatisĂ©es pour le rĂ©soudre. Dans cette thĂšse, je propose plusieurs mĂ©thodes pour rĂ©soudre les principaux problĂšmes des outils existants, afin d’aider les dĂ©veloppeurs dans leurs activitĂ©s de maintenance et d’assurance qualitĂ©. Ma thĂšse est qu’il est possible d’amĂ©liorer le refactoring automatisĂ© en considĂ©rant de nouvelles dimensions : (1) le contexte de tĂąche du dĂ©veloppeur pour prioriser le refactoring des classes pertinentes ; (2) l’effort du test pour rĂ©duire le coĂ»t des tests aprĂšs le refactoring ; (3) l’identification de conflit entre opĂ©rations de refactoring afin de rĂ©duire le coĂ»t de refactoring ; et (4) l’efficacitĂ© Ă©nergĂ©tique pour amĂ©liorer la consommation d’énergie des applications mobiles aprĂšs refactoring.----------ABSTRACT: Software maintenance cost is estimated to be more than 70% of the total cost of system, because of many factors, including new user’s requirements, the adoption of new technologies and the quality of software systems. From these factors, quality is the one that we can control and continually improved to prevent degradation of performance and reduction of effectiveness (a.k.a. design decay). Moreover, to stay competitive, the software industry has shortened its release cycles to deliver new products and features faster, which results in more pressure on developer teams and the acceleration of system’s design evolution. One way to prevent design decay is the identification and correction of anti-patterns which are indicators of poor design quality. To improve design quality and remove anti-patterns, developers perform small behavior-preserving transformations (a.k.a. refactoring). Manual refactoring is expensive, as it requires to (1) identify the code entities that need to be refactored; (2) generate refactoring operations for classes identified in the previous step; (3) find the correct order of application of the refactorings generated, to maximize the quality effect and to minimize conflicts. Hence, researchers and practitioners have formulated refactoring as an optimization problem and use search-based techniques to propose (semi)automated approaches to solve it. In this dissertation, we propose several approaches to tackle some of the major issues in existing refactoring tools, to assist developers in their maintenance and quality assurance activities

    Combining SOA and BPM Technologies for Cross-System Process Automation

    This paper summarizes the results of an industry case study that introduced a cross-system business process automation solution based on a combination of SOA and BPM standard technologies (i.e., BPMN, BPEL, WSDL). Besides discussing major weaknesses of the existing, custom-built, solution and comparing them against experiences with the developed prototype, the paper presents a course of action for transforming the current solution into the proposed solution. This includes a general approach, consisting of four distinct steps, as well as specific action items that are to be performed for every step. The discussion also covers language and tool support and challenges arising from the transformation
