    Identifying hidden contexts

    Get PDF
In this study we investigate how to identify hidden contexts from the data in classification tasks. Contexts are artifacts in the data, which do not predict the class label directly. For instance, in speech recognition task speakers might have different accents, which do not directly discriminate between the spoken words. Identifying hidden contexts is considered as data preprocessing task, which can help to build more accurate classifiers, tailored for particular contexts and give an insight into the data structure. We present three techniques to identify hidden contexts, which hide class label information from the input data and partition it using clustering techniques. We form a collection of performance measures to ensure that the resulting contexts are valid. We evaluate the performance of the proposed techniques on thirty real datasets. We present a case study illustrating how the identified contexts can be used to build specialized more accurate classifiers

A Neural Networks Committee for the Contextual Bandit Problem

This paper presents a new contextual bandit algorithm, NeuralBandit, which does not need hypothesis on stationarity of contexts and rewards. Several neural networks are trained to modelize the value of rewards knowing the context. Two variants, based on multi-experts approach, are proposed to choose online the parameters of multi-layer perceptrons. The proposed algorithms are successfully tested on a large dataset with and without stationarity of rewards.Comment: 21st International Conference on Neural Information Processin

The management of context-sensitive features: A review of strategies

    Get PDF
In this paper, we review five heuristic strategies for handling context- sensitive features in supervised machine learning from examples. We discuss two methods for recovering lost (implicit) contextual information. We mention some evidence that hybrid strategies can have a synergetic effect. We then show how the work of several machine learning researchers fits into this framework. While we do not claim that these strategies exhaust the possibilities, it appears that the framework includes all of the techniques that can be found in the published literature on context-sensitive learning

Handling Concept Drift for Predictions in Business Process Mining

    Get PDF
Predictive services nowadays play an important role across all business sectors. However, deployed machine learning models are challenged by changing data streams over time which is described as concept drift. Prediction quality of models can be largely influenced by this phenomenon. Therefore, concept drift is usually handled by retraining of the model. However, current research lacks a recommendation which data should be selected for the retraining of the machine learning model. Therefore, we systematically analyze different data selection strategies in this work. Subsequently, we instantiate our findings on a use case in process mining which is strongly affected by concept drift. We can show that we can improve accuracy from 0.5400 to 0.7010 with concept drift handling. Furthermore, we depict the effects of the different data selection strategies
