Variability in Singing and in Song in the Zebra Finch

Variability is a defining feature of the oscine song learning process, reflected in song and in the neural pathways involved in song learning. For the zebra finch, juveniles learning to sing typically exhibit a high degree of vocal variability, and this variability appears to be driven by a key brain nucleus. It has been suggested that this variability is a necessary part of a trial-â€and-â€error learning process in which the bird must search for possible improvements to its song. Our work examines the role this variability plays in learning in two ways: through behavioral experiments with juvenile zebra finches, and through a computational model of parts of the oscine brain. Previous studies have shown that some finches exhibit less variability during the learning process than others by producing repetitive vocalizations. A constantly changing song model was played to juvenile zebra finches to determine whether auditory stimuli can affect this behavior. This stimulus was shown to cause an overall increase in repetitiveness; furthermore, there was a correlation between repetitiveness at an early stage in the learning process and the length of time a bird is repetitive overall, and birds that were repetitive tended to repeat the same thing over an extended period of time. The role of a key brain nucleus involved in song learning was examined through computational modeling. Previous studies have shown that this nucleus produces variability in song, but can also bias the song of a bird in such a way as to reduce errors while singing. Activity within this nucleus during singing is predominantly uncorrelated with the timing of the song, however a portion of this activity is correlated in such a manner. The modeling experiments consider the possibility that this persistent signal is part of a trial-â€and-â€error search and contrast this with the possibility that the persistent signal is the product of some mechanism to directly improve song. Simulation results show that a mixture of timing-â€dependent and timing-â€independent activity in this nucleus produces optimal learning results for the case where the persistent signal is a key component of a trial-â€and-â€error search, but not in the case where this signal will directly improve song. Although a mixture of timing-â€locked and timing-â€independent activity produces optimal results, the ratio found to be optimal within the model differs from what has been observed in vivo. Finally, novel methods for the analysis of birdsong, motivated by the high variability of juvenile song, are presented. These methods are designed to work with sets of song samples rather than through pairwise comparison. The utility of these methods is demonstrated, as well as results illustrating how such methods can be used as the basis for aggregate measures of song such as repertoire complexity

Biometrics is the study of methods of recognizing humans based on their behavioral and physical characteristics or traits. Face recognition is one of the biometric modalities that received a great amount of attention from many researchers during the past few decades because of its potential applications in a variety of security domains. Face recognition however is not only concerned with recognizing human faces, but also with recognizing faces of non-biological entities or avatars. Fortunately, the need for secure and affordable virtual worlds is attracting the attention of many researchers who seek to find fast, automatic and reliable ways to identify virtual worlds’ avatars. In this work, I propose new techniques for recognizing avatar faces, which also can be applied to recognize human faces. Proposed methods are based mainly on a well-known and efficient local texture descriptor, Local Binary Pattern (LBP). I am applying different versions of LBP such as: Hierarchical Multi-scale Local Binary Patterns and Adaptive Local Binary Pattern with Directional Statistical Features in the wavelet space and discuss the effect of this application on the performance of each LBP version. In addition, I use a new version of LBP called Local Difference Pattern (LDP) with other well-known descriptors and classifiers to differentiate between human and avatar face images. The original LBP achieves high recognition rate if the tested images are pure but its performance gets worse if these images are corrupted by noise. To deal with this problem I propose a new definition to the original LBP in which the LBP descriptor will not threshold all the neighborhood pixel based on the central pixel value. A weight for each pixel in the neighborhood will be computed, a new value for each pixel will be calculated and then using simple statistical operations will be used to compute the new threshold, which will change automatically, based on the pixel’s values. This threshold can be applied with the original LBP or any other version of LBP and can be extended to work with Local Ternary Pattern (LTP) or any version of LTP to produce different versions of LTP for recognizing noisy avatar and human faces images

The paper describes a new type of evolving connectionist systems (ECOS) called evolving spatio-temporal data machines based on neuromorphic, brain-like information processing principles (eSTDM). These are multi-modular computer systems designed to deal with large and fast spatio/spectro temporal data using spiking neural networks (SNN) as major processing modules. ECOS and eSTDM in particular can learn incrementally from data streams, can include ‘on the fly’ new input variables, new output class labels or regression outputs, can continuously adapt their structure and functionality, can be visualised and interpreted for new knowledge discovery and for a better understanding of the data and the processes that generated it. eSTDM can be used for early event prediction due to the ability of the SNN to spike early, before whole input vectors (they were trained on) are presented. A framework for building eSTDM called NeuCube along with a design methodology for building eSTDM using this are presented. The implementation of this framework in MATLAB, Java, and PyNN (Python) is presented. The latter facilitates the use of neuromorphic hardware platforms to run the eSTDM. Selected examples are given of eSTDM for pattern recognition and early event prediction on EEG data, fMRI data, multisensory seismic data, ecological data, climate data, audio-visual data. Future directions are discussed, including extension of the NeuCube framework for building neurogenetic eSTDM and also new applications of eSTDM

Além disso, o sistema mostrou a eficiência dos classificadores Support Vector M achine(SVM ) e votadores para a realização da meta-classificação, bem como o potencial de alguns extratores de características para a área de verificação de assinaturas, com o foi o caso do Compound Local Binary Pattern(CLBP).Abstract: Signature recognition and identification in documents and manuscripts are challenging tasks that have been studied over time, especially in the matter of discerning genuine signatures from forgeries. With the recent advancement of technologies, especially in the field of computing, research in this area has become increasingly frequent, enabling the use of new methods of analysis of signatures, increasing accuracy and confidence in their verification. There is still much to be explored in research in this area within computing. Signature verification generally consists in obtaining features about a signature and using them to distinguish it from others. Studies proposing different types o f methods have been carried out in recent years in order to improve the results obtained by signature verification and identification systems. Different ways of extracting features have been explored, such as the use of artificial neural networks specifically aimed at verifying signatures, like ResNet and SigNet, representing the state-of-the-art in this research area. Despite this, simpler methods of feature extraction are still widely used, such as the Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), the Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and the Local Phase Quantization (LPQ) for example, presenting, in many cases, similar results to the state-of-the-art. Not only that, but different ways of combining information from feature extractors and results from classifiers have been proposed, such as feature selectors, machine committee methods and feature quality analysis algorithms. In this way, the developed work consists in exploring different methods of features extractors combined in an ensemble, so that each ensemble is built in a writer-dependent way and is specifically adapted to recognize the best features for each author, learning which combinations of classifiers with a certain group of characteristics is better adapted to recognize their signatures. The performance and functionality of the system were compared w ith the m ain works in the area developed in recent years, w ith tests having been carried out with the CEDAR, M CYT and UTSig databases. Despite not overcoming the state-of-the-art, the system presented good performance, being able to be compared with some other important works in the area. In addition, the system showed the efficiency of Support Vector Machine(SVM ) classifiers and voters to perform the meta-classification, as well as the potential of some feature extractors for the signature verification area, such as the Compound Local Binary Pattern(CLBP)

Emotions play a very important role in how we think and behave. As such, the emotions we feel every day can compel us to act and influence the decisions and plans we make about our lives. Being able to measure, analyze, and better comprehend how or why our emotions may change is thus of much relevance to understand human behavior and its consequences. Despite the great efforts made in the past in the study of human emotions, it is only now, with the advent of wearable, mobile, and ubiquitous technologies, that we can aim to sense and recognize emotions, continuously and in real time. This book brings together the latest experiences, findings, and developments regarding ubiquitous sensing, modeling, and the recognition of human emotions
